Lol
When Wilco released their sixth studio album, 2007’s Sky Blue Sky, I wrote a scathing review for Pitchfork that introduced the world to the term dad-rock: “An album of unapologetic straightforwardness.

very much agreed that Thunder Island and Her Strut are top tier dad rock, although also yes this is my dad's rock, the dads I meet closer to my own age all seem to either be super into Pantera or Death Cab for Cutie, no in-between
― Florin Cuchares, Monday, 17 July 2023 04:26 (two years ago)
Never really sure what constitutes dad rock. For my dad it would have been classical with a bit of Beatles thrown in. Anyway…
Sniff ‘n’ the Tears - Driver’s Seat Head East - Never Been Any Reason
― that's not my post, Monday, 17 July 2023 04:59 (two years ago)
Ditto--what is Dad Rock? Does it depend on your age, or is it a specific window in history?
― clemenza, Monday, 17 July 2023 05:03 (two years ago)
lol i had never factored in my own dad to the equation, were that the case it would be more like Johnny Horton’s Sink The Bismark & Joe Dolce’s Shaddup You Face
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 July 2023 05:09 (two years ago)
In my household, "dad rock" means "the music syncs on The Bear" except for one notable exception I won't spoil for those yet to see it.
― assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 17 July 2023 06:01 (two years ago)
oof yeah have not seen the bear but the soundtrack has some dad vibes for sure
I want to say that dad rock is a particular thing in time but is there a dad outside of time? Is there a perennial dad rock? I don't know what the throughline is and as a dad am afraid to ask
― Florin Cuchares, Monday, 17 July 2023 07:15 (two years ago)

I saw that claim posted on The National thread, and I was surprised that that was the band’s image in their own country. In Eastern Europe, fans of The National tend to be single hipsters in their twenties, and perhaps more females than males. Brooklyn got exported as the spiritual homeland of hipsters worldwide (alongside Berlin), and The National are regarded as a Brooklyn band par excellance.

― reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 17 July 2023 11:29 (two years ago)
I object to the nomenclature of “dad rock” on the following grounds: 1) it’s gendered 2) it relies on reproductive status3) even if you accept the premise that it is “a thing” it’s subjective and reductive to the point of being meaningless as a category. Therefore I propose that the term should not be used. The end.
― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Monday, 17 July 2023 13:42 (two years ago)
Yeah this concept falls apart pretty quickly because there are a lot of dad demographics.
I'm a 50ish dad who likes Ella Fitzgerald and Talking Heads; my own personal father is 80ish and likes Elvis Costello and Jacques Offfenbach.
Also as LL points out, the gender essentialism is a bit thorny
― Exit, pursued by a beer (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 17 July 2023 14:01 (two years ago)
I always thought Dad Rock was rock made by non-boomer artists that appealed to boomers
27. The Wallflowers- One Headlight28. Counting Crows- Mr. Jones29. The Black Crowes- Twice as Humble30. Oasis- Wonderwall31. Kings of Leon- Use Somebody32. Lenny Kravitz- Always on the Run
― Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Monday, 17 July 2023 14:11 (two years ago)
when people say "dad rock" I always wonder who's dad we talking about here? like is it stuff my Dad would like, or things I like now that I am a Dad? either way I will say "The Distance" by CAKE
― frogbs, Monday, 17 July 2023 14:27 (two years ago)
Dad's going for speed
― Exit, pursued by a beer (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 17 July 2023 14:37 (two years ago)
Right now, 12-13 year olds are being annoyed by the music from their dads' high school/college days--so basically stuff from 1997-2005.
The White Stripes are prime dad rock at the moment.
― Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Monday, 17 July 2023 14:38 (two years ago)
Not to be obtuse, but looking at the compilation linked to above--Now That’s What I Call Dad Rock--it's still hard for me to figure out what it is. A quick glance at the first few songs made me think "this is just Classic Rock," but that broke down quickly. What genre encompasses the Stooges, Simple Minds, Europe, and Avril Lavigne? I don't get it.
― clemenza, Monday, 17 July 2023 15:05 (two years ago)
Dad Rock is not really a genre. It's roughly stuff Homer Simpson or Tony Soprano would sing along to in the car.
― Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Monday, 17 July 2023 15:13 (two years ago)
To clarify: Is Phil Collins/James Taylor/Michael Bolton Dadrock?Mystery Bonus Question....Fave "Dadrock Record"/Least Fave "Dadrock Record"?
― Lord Custos 2.0 beta, Sunday, April 28, 2002 8:00 PM (twenty-one years ago) bookmarkflaglink
No, they aren't really I don't think.
Paul Weller solo records are Dadrock. Records which are a bit like Paul Weller solo records are also Dadrock. Records which are trying to be like classic Sixties rock but were recorded in the 90s and 00s are generally Dadrock but not always.

Rock: Classic or Dad?
― Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Monday, 17 July 2023 16:53 (two years ago)
Dads and dadness and rock have all shifted in meaning.
This term was conceived in the 90s, AKA the end of history, when critics thought time would never catch up with them.

John Fogerty's concerts have literally become Dad Rock simply because his now-adult sons are backing him. It's actually pretty sweet - the one newish song he plays is a song he wrote for his wife of over 30 years, and it's accompanied by a slide show of personal family photos, showing him and his family as they grow and get older. He really comes off like a family man, and one highlight is when he jams on guitar for a few minutes with one of his sons.
