Julie Byrne's album The Greater Wings

Currently listening to this and it's hitting me super hard, really beautiful and moving, spacey folk that sounds very contemporary (i.e., not derivative). But I'm feeling pretty vulnerable right now because my beloved 14yo cat is recovering from surgery next to me — what does ilx think? And what about her older albums? I was aware of her but can't remember if I tried the previous one or not

her previous one was a big favorite of mine and definitely worth checking. haven't heard this one yet, didn't know it was out until seeing this!

glad to get the word out! let me know what you think about it compared to the prev. This one is a little heavy thematically (mourning a sudden loss), so I'm honestly not sure how often I could listen -- though it's not dark or solemn, just really piercing -- maybe I'll try the other one before relistening

played it a half dozen times Friday-Sunday. ridiculously good.

this is somehow better

I'm utterly seduced by the production and the atmosphere, just waiting to see if the songs come through.

(picnic, lightning) very very frightening (Chinaski), Monday, 17 July 2023 19:47 (two years ago)

I've been listening to this on repeat all week, so lovely.

yeah I'm obsessed with this now. Which is kind of annoying because it commands my attention

Given how deliberately insubstantial (not in a bad sense - more in the sense of feeling like floating through mist) the arrangements and Julie's singing are, and how metaphysical the vibe of the songs tend to be I find the lyrics occasionally very disarming in their directness and vulnerability. Like, the last words you hear on the album are:

Sign on Caravan East reads, "For you, anything"
I guess it's a story so much greatеr than our own
Alive, moving through dusk
Alive, if only once
You makе me feel like the prom queen that I never was

beautiful album

xp — that line "you lit my joint with the end of your cigarette" is like that too, a great detail amidst the more poetic musings

wonderful album

This album has bits that remind me of The Weather Station's Ignorance and Weyes Blood's Titanic Rising, but it's so much more delicate and subtle than either. It should be boring, but instead it is utterly peaceful and sensuous. I just love the arrangements and how steady her vocals are throughout. I put it on and slowly float away.

a treasured memory: many years ago I got to hear her play a few tunes in a living room among friends and it was one of those moments, beyond “oh this person at this party is a talented songwriter”, just an immediate feeling of “oh this person is touched by something special on another level”, like if I never saw or heard her again I would still be thinking about those songs today. so happy to see her records get progressively more & more love, this one is her best

that's really cool, OEO. reminds me of seeing Daniel Bachman play for like 12 people in a frigid art gallery in Springfield, Oregon

"utterly peaceful and sensuous" is a great description

It's a lovely album. I also recently found this really nice DJ mix / playlist from Julie Byrne here:
