American record label founded by Phil Walden, Alan Walden, and Frank Fenter.
First Incarnation 1969-1979The first incarnation lasted from 1969 until 1979 when the company went out of business. During this period, distribution was handled by Atlantic Records, then Warner Bros and finally PhonoDisc (from 1977). Phonodisc releases can be identified by a CPN catalogue number prefix on many of them.
In the UK and Europe Capricorn was distributed by Polydor from June 1974.
Second Incarnation 1991-2000The Waldens reformed the label for a second incarnation in the early 90s. The label was the home to such acts as 311 and Cake before shutting down again in 2000. Distribution during the second incarnation was handled by Warner Bros., then RED Distribution and finally back to PolyGram.
May 7, 1996--Mercury Records formed a joint venture with Capricorn Records to market, promote, manufacture and distribute records.
After CapricornIn December of 2000, Phil Walden sold the label's assets to Volcano. Because the Waldens had agreed not to use the Capricorn name for at least 5 years, they formed Velocette Records.

Two Roseanne people in that list! But only one of them punched out Elvis Costello.

Those Eddie Henderson records (which are Mwandishi records in disguise) are amazing.

elvin bishop (can live without, to be honest.)
Personally I would give Ol' El' the "best when drunk" rating, but I'm a fan, see my DN I haven't changed in years.

"Fooled Around and Fell in Love" is one of those all-time songs that can immediately transport me back to 10-year-old me.

I inherited an Eric Quincy Tate LP from my grandpa, not this one though, the one after it. I didn't know until today that Eric Quincy Tate is the name of the band, not a person. tbh the LP I've got I don't like v much.

I first learned about Capricorn through Widespread Panic, who were the first band signed to the 1990s incarnation. I was in love with their album, Everyday, when it came out, but never became a big fan despite that. Revisited it this year for the first time in decades and it holds up, I think. That's a young Angelina Jolie on the album cover!

They also had Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, who definitely fit in with my early Phish and Bela Fleck years, but

i only know that Capricorn EQT album. and i don't remember it well. that list i made above is pretty old. i have never seen a copy of the first Eric Quincy Tate album. its on Cotillion. and it features the only song i know of that has the word "bream" in the title. as in the fish. and i've never heard that third album either. which came out here on a small Georgia label. GRC. which i think was some sorta tax-scam label. owned by a guy who owned a slew of fly by night record labels.

Michael George Thevis (February 25, 1932 – November 20, 2013) was an American millionaire businessman, pornographer and convicted murderer. After escaping from prison on April 28, 1978, he was put on the FBI Most Wanted List.In the early seventies, Michael Thevis had a problem. He discovered that he was under investigation from the FBI. Not wanting to follow in the footsteps of Al Capone and Dutch Schultz, who were brought down by federal investigations, Michael Thevis began looking for legitimate enterprises.Casting around looking for a legitimate business, Michael Thevis hit upon the idea of forming not one, but three record labels. This included GRC, Aware and Hotlanta. These labels would become part of A Michael Thevis Enterprise. Soon, there was a new addition to Michael Thevis’ musical empire, the The Sound Pit in Atlanta.GRC and the rest of Michael Thevis’ musical empire all came crashing down in late 1975. Michael Thevis’ attempt to build a legitimate business empire had failed. Soon, it emerged that Michael Thevis’ musical empire was always doomed to failure. It had been for three years, ever since the FBI starting investigating his business activities.Prior to entering prison, Thevis and attorney Joel Katz (one of the nation's most powerful entertainment lawyers) sold GRC to Thevis' secretary Laverne Bowden. The label's copyrights and publishing, since 1981, have been owned by Atlanta publishing firm Ginn Music Group.

yep my copy is on GRC. doesn't look like it's worth anything, oh well
― Colonel Poo, Thursday, 20 July 2023 18:58 (two years ago)
I never knew about Thevis. GRC was the label Sammy Johns' "Chevy Van" was on. I would probably buy a copy of Moog Fluting by The Ebony Godfather just based on the title, but I've never seen one.
