i think it might actually be worth listening to the rundown for the first time in a LONG TIME just for the fact it'll be Mr Peel having a go at it as they continue their search for a regular presenter

"Thats The Datsuns in at er number 32 this week, and er funny story about The Datuns (goes into five minute diatribe)...and ah I must say that's my favourite out of all the songs in the chart so far this week...oh but ur, hang on, down thirteen places this week at NUM-BER THIRTY-ONE! this is Scooter with 'Minimise The Space, Maximise The Bass"

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt it'll be much like that, he'll be too nervous. Will he insist on doing it from Peel Acres tho'? If so, Flossie might read out the numbers for a bit, then get bored and wander off.

Jeff W, Monday, 2 December 2002 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

btw - way to go, Daniel B! (or rather: way to go, ver kids!)

Jeff W, Monday, 2 December 2002 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's hope he slips in PragVec *by mistake*.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Lets hope he slips in Shirokuma by mistake

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If there that short of people to present it, I'll do it! I'm sure I could do okay.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have listened to most of Peel's R1 shows since the mid-70s, but I don't much fancy this. I want someone with some enthusiasm for pop music to present the charts, not someone who thinks 99% of it is predictable drivel, as Peel does. Actually, I want the old Alan Freeman back, who could make a record going up three places to number 24 sound of almost apocalyptic impact. Tommy Vance was good at this too. The fact that they have widely rotten taste in music is irrelevant when they are not choosing the records.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 December 2002 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Peel hosting the top 40 is the only thing that could possibly make me want to listen to it. Limit him to starting the record at the wrong speed only 27 times per show, though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, he might attract some people who don't actually like chart pop. This seems of limited use.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

[i don't think i've heard the Charts since Bruno Brookes presented it... blimey, that was a while ago!]

michael (michael), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Peel is allowed to comment on the tracks, ...gee that was a ghastly record...

Remember Peel on TOTP circa 1986 - on Bon Jovi - they give music a bad name !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 2 December 2002 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Side note - Chris Moyles wasn't actually that bad this weekend, was he?

They'll all be on CD's, so we'll have to be happy with him playing the non-radio-edit versions instead.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 2 December 2002 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

why can't they get a robot or something? i don't want anyone commenting in any direction thank you

mark s (mark s), Monday, 2 December 2002 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Moyles was OK, mainly because he wasn't allowed to have a "sidekick". I've heard rumours that Tim Westwood is doing it, but find them slightly hard to believe; Emma B will present it this week, apparently.

some great Peel lines from years past:

"well, they say Aretha Franklin could make any old rubbish sound good, and blow me, she just has" (prob. after "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves", though poss. after "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me")

"they're so talented doesn't it make you want to spit" (on Haysi Fantayzee)

"Eric Clapton, Unplugged, and I wish he was" (doing the album chart rundown while sitting in for Jakki Brambles on daytime Radio 1 in 1993)

"That's Chris Isaak, and Can't Do A Thing To Stop Me, actually yes I can Chris, I can take your awful CD and throw it as far away from this studio as possible" (1993 again)

and don't forget:

David Jensen: "I'll let you introduce this one, John, because I know you've supported this act for ages and often play them on your show." Peel: "Yes, this is a very important moment for me." Cue "Orville's Song", naturally.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"If this isn't a hit I'll come and break wind in your bathroom" or something along those lines - Peel on TOTP introducing Pete Wylie's "Sinful"

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

the funny thing is that I had this idea ELEVEN YEARS AGO: I distinctly remember thinking c.1991 they could have all the DJs taking turns on the Top 40 show, so it'd be Peel one week, Steve Wright (cf Moyles) the next ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

westwood presenting the top 40?

The rundown would take all week, wouldn't it?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually looking forward to some of these top 40s. The Mark Radcliffe one would be great if they let Lard in the studio as well. And the countdown in the style of the countdown for the cheesily chart challenge or whatever it was called

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

They should get Brian Sewell in.

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't this going to be Jimmy Young's new Sunday slot?

"Ar-har, it's T...L.....C you see!"

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"those were the New Seekers there, begging, stealing and borrowing!" (my favourite JY-ism, for my sins)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone catch Mark Radcliffe doing the rundown yesterday? Struck me that he wasn't that far away from the likes of DLT and Peter Powell, constantly running down everything in the chart (except for Liam Lynch - ???!??) with much sarcasm and little, if any, humour. I hope that Peel doesn't apply similar tactics.

Strange, but it does seem that Chris bloody Moyles has done best at this so far, does it not? He reined in his usual arsehole tendencies and wasn't just, for the most part, impartial but actually sounded enthusiastic about what was happening on the chart. I await Westwood with great interest.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 December 2002 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

New Chart presenter announcedb it's Wes ! Wes who da fuck r u? 23 year old from Salford that struck lucky.

EMAP to drop Pepsi Chart in favour of Smash Hits with Mark Goodier presenting !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Radcliffe had a dig at S Club Juniors for only entering at #6 - crafty heathen

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't listen to the radio 1 chart show, but from my understanding of radio 1 - is not the top 40 show the second biggest job in terms of profile/ prestige - after the breakfast show ?

brave move by Parfitt to draft in a radio 1 newbie straight into the chart show job?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bit of a graveyard slot, actually - Blackburn mightily resented being pushed into it when he did it; and he was legendarily useless - "Massive leap of one place," "Sensational new sound of Durrin Durrin," "It's been a good week for John Lennon, he has three songs in the top ten" (Sunday after his shooting), "That was Public Image Ltd - and now here's some music." Subsequently Vance (who wasn't too bad at it), Brookes, Goodier.

I certainly do not want to listen to someone who says things like "most maddest." Sounds like the sort of person who'd willingly dress up as a member of Atomic Kitten for Radio 1 roadshows and play "Oh Happy Day" if the Tories win the next election.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

23 year old Wes Butters to earn six figure annual salary as the new regular presenter of the Top 40!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And to think Fluff Freeman used to do it for 5/6'd plus unlimited Luncheon Vouchers to use in the BBC staff canteen (note: "LVs not accepted").

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's Tommy Vance when you want him? Racking up the bank-balance with Gilette voice-overs, that's where, but I'd like to hear him giving the full theatrics in that inimitable sandpaper tone and rock-war-veteran delivery: "Now crrrrrrrashing rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright in at number32isanother colossal trrrrack from heavymetal messiah's Queensofthestoneage, taken frrromthealbum Songs FOR the Deaf, this... is God IS on THE Rrrrrradio..."

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mmmmmmm....lllllev-I-A-THANs of rrrrrrrock-uhhhrrr. ACuhhhhrrrr-DCuhhhrrrr. Ironunnnunun Maidenununun-uhhrrrrr. Thaaaaaaaa-fffffffrrriday night connection-uhhhrrr this week comes from Guardian of the Universe, Sidcup-uhhhrrrr."

Whatever happened to Tom Russell (this will only make sense to long-term Glasgow posters) who was the Scottish Tommy Vance only deeper-voiced and more mentalist.

"HULLLOOOOOOO! It's tha Friee-day Ni-eeeght RRRRROOOCK SHOOOOOOOOO. Tonight ah have a special gueeeest - ah wull be talkin' tae Brooooce Dick In Sonne Of Eye Ron May Den! And we huv a say-shun from - GLAAAS-GOW!"

(yes there was, and probably still is, a rock band called Glasgow)

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm just glad its not Richard Blackwood

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm just glad its not Richard Bacon

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Still on the Vance tip: "... and that was unmistakable sound of the welllloiledrockengine of Aerosmith in fullllllllllll harrrrd-rrrrrrrrrrrrrrocking flow with ‘Sweet Emotion’. Now it’s timetounleash the beast that is The Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriday Nigggght Rrrrrock showwwwwwww; The Rrrrrock Warrrrrrrrrr" [cue A-team drums and Vietnam machinegun chatter] Vance in his deepest bass voice "Act 1". "OK, firstuptonight we have a young fourrrrpiece frrrommm Corrrrbyyyyyy. Callling themselves Wyverrrrrrrn’s Clawwwwwwwwww, self-financedddd demo EPPP entitled ‘Krrrush offf the wolllllfff’s embrrrrrace’ is now availablefromthe JJ’s shop on Corrrrrbyyy High Street and lead singer Karrrrrrl Switchbladdddde tells me that the band stand for everrrrrything true and pure about heavvvyguitarrrrrmetallllllllllllllllllllll. Commendable sentiment." [cue five minutes of absolutely awful cod-thash with Coverdale-style wailing vocals interweaving a story of wolves, claws, the truth and a virgin lost in the woods, fighting against frenzied screeching guitar tapping from a Warlock-wielding idiot with way more ambition (to hear his guitar pushed up to the top of the mix) than talent]. "Well, uh, that was Wyverrrrrrrrrrn’s Clawwwwwwwww. Catchthemmmatthe Night Owlllllllll, Cheltenhamahhh, for Thurssssday night rocccccckkkkkkk on the 15th of Novemberrrrrr." Etc etc.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has reminded me of how I dislike Peel.

I *don't* expect him to slag off things in the chart, but on the contrary to praise them; the effect will be of perversity and people saying "the funny thing is, he really likes all those 'pop' records". He's been going on about how grate Kylie Minogue is for years. Meanwhile, between this and the rubbish on his own programme, he has no time for things I actually like. The thing you really can't imagine him presenting favourably is not, say, Atomic Kitten, but Bruce Springsteen.

That's how I dislike Peel. But I don't *only* dislike him - I like him too.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

heheh, that's a great TV tribute!

the other glasgow rock band who always turned up on the tom russell radio clyde rooooock shooooooo were SCHEME (so named 'cos they came from a housing scheme; sang abt reality, everyone else in glasgow hated them - wonder if they're still going? they were all about 50 years old back in the '80s, if i remember rightly).

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I find myself agreeing with Marcello about Radcliffe: I was worried by the Liam Lynch moment as well, but not half as much as I was by his excitement over the fact that Coldplay had climbed back to the dizzy heights of number 10 in the album chart. But then Radcliffe is essentially a part of my past now, even if still a part of Radio 1 present.

according to the Xmas Radio Times it'll be Sara Cox on Sunday, then Nemone for the post-Christmas "lots of songs going back up and nothing going down more than three places" chart on December 29th.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, Roger's masterstroke I think was the Wyvern reference ("Penda's Fen", the Tolkien connection etc etc)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Marcello hit this nail right on the head, cf Wes in the Grauniad today: "My mum always called me a child of Thatcher" (he was born 4/5/79) "I have no political standpoint at all, no." Not even on war with Iraq? "Uh-uh. Let the prime minister sort it out."

He'll get an invite to Downing Street just like Bruno Brookes did, you mark my words.
