Yet another one! Is it merely satisfying the ever increasing public appetite for polls?

David Gunnip, Monday, 2 December 2002 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Polls are great fun. They're actually more fun if you completely disagree with them. Absentees from this one: Tom Waits, Nick Drake, Van Morrison (yes, no Astral Weeks), Loveless, Forever Changes, Pulp. Pet Sounds at 99th, below Linkin Park and Moby. Strokes in the top 10.

But then, what ARE the 100 best albums ever? How can you conduct a poll that will not get everyone riled up?

In truth, the fact that people voted these albums in entitles them to their place. How else are you going to decide what the all-time best albums are, other than by asking people? You could say: this is just the readers of one mag, so it's not a good reflection. But a more widespread public poll would throw up even more contentious results.

But then, why is the absence of the above artists contentious? What entitles them to a place? I wouldn't complain about the absence of Yo La Tengo or Susuma Yokota, so why do I notice the absence of Astral Weeks more, when I don't even like it that much?

So, all polls are pointless. But why is it that when I look at this one, I automatically think "WRRRROOOONNNGGGG!"?

Erm, I'm not sure what my point is...Continue!

An alternative could be some polls (you need to login though) at my place:

- Best of 1972
- Best of 1980 (hurry up it will be closed tonight)
- Best of 1999

The selection of ten records per year is mine. The best stuff from my collection.

Sorry David, I didn't want to kill the discussion on your thread.

P.S. The 1980 poll is closed now. The winner was Joy Division's Closer with almost 40% of the votes.

I know him vaguely, he's a nice guy, good luck editing Q though.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Thursday, 9 February 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

yeah .. will be interesting to see what he does to it.
would love to stop getting mojo for me monthly fix and try something different.
just the so-called humour in Q gets on my fucking nerves (the dreadful captions etc)

Rees apparently a victim of the chase-the-kids strategy. He had no idea it was coming.

Not quite "made good" for Andrew, given that a few years ago he was the boss of the editor of Q.

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Thursday, 9 February 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

fair enough.
i don't keep up with the politics of the industry that close ..

mark e, Thursday, 9 February 2012 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

yeah always seems like a nice fella on the WORD podcasts and a proper oldskool knowledgeable dance fan if i'm not much mistaken. i finally stopped buying Q after reading it since 1986 in the 'Rees era' so it'd be interesting to see what he does with it.

piscesx, Thursday, 9 February 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

iron maiden will give interviews to Q again now?

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

xpost Were you studying politics at Leeds in the late 80s then, mark e?

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

@VBB : late 80s + leeds, yes. politics, no.

used to hang out with the hall of residence crowd that AH was part of.
we used to chat re designers republic/age of chance etc a lot, especially as AH and his bro ripped tDR styled graf-x for their time @ the student newspaper.

mark e, Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

Do you remember his "drugs issue" of Leeds Student, printed over a paisley underlay, which rendered all the content unreadable?

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

seem to recall a fair bit of content unreadable whatever the underlay ..

joke.

[actually now you mention it, yes i do recall that .. ]
