mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:31 (two years ago)

I first want to give some pushback against the idea that the music of Rod Stewart is unsuitable for drunken listening.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:40 (two years ago)

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:43 (two years ago)

how is this not the yummy fur?

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:44 (two years ago)

this is the yummy fur.

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:44 (two years ago)

i may be letting my nihilism cloud my selections

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:46 (two years ago)

it would appear so

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:47 (two years ago)

okay i am checking out the yummy fur, thank you!

deeply awful name tho

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:50 (two years ago)

there's an abandoned listening thread i think

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:52 (two years ago)

i guess the answer might be dawn of the replicants if you are either on a farm, wish you had been born in the iron age, or recently finished reading riddley walker

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 06:10 (two years ago)

it’s the proclaimers

the shame! I should put together an introductory playlist, obvs the early stuff is a bit less accessible

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 06:32 (two years ago)

taking "extremely drunk" to mean "maudlin drunk" and thank god I haven't done that for a long time

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 06:33 (two years ago)

*perhaps* fair, but maybe not quite

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 06:46 (two years ago)

also al stewart has a bunch of good songs; apologies to him

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 06:49 (two years ago)

I've only enjoyed the proclaimers while drunk and surrounded by scots and I wouldn't choose to hear them in any other context

cocteaus probably pair better with cannabis or psychedelics than alcohol though it probably wouldn't hurt (except to the extent that alcohol always hurts)

I can't think of a drug that would make mogwai enjoyable but that's just me

Nyah Fearties acoustic hard-core
Turkey Bones and the Wild Dogs improvised post punk rock

Stevo, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 07:21 (two years ago)

John Martin's Inside Out was recorded while extremely drunk so may pay back listening to in a similar state.

Stevo, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 07:23 (two years ago)

from seeing them live a good number of times in the late 90s / very early 2000s, the answer is "weed/poppers"

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 07:34 (two years ago)

OK sure interesting combo

king creosote ('largs - long' if jubilantly drunk, most other songs if maudlin drunk)

a holistic digital egosystem (ledge), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 08:03 (two years ago)

SAHB belong on this list

my drunk listening usually goes to maudlin pretty quick, but there's not many of these acts i'd go on a long listening spree with. individual tracks here and there, yeah. Teenage Fanclub are probably my most listened to "sad but kinda upbeat" out of this lot

the best scottish band to listen to when i'm drunk is whichever bands are the ones i think i can sing all the right lyrics to (and mostly can) when doing drunk karaoke. travis, the proclaimers and big music-era simple minds basically.

on the other hand the other best scottish bands to listen to when i'm drunk are those i can happily sing all the right lyrics to (and mostly can) when sober and nowhere near karaoke. the beta band, 80s blue nile and post-punk-era simple minds basically. and also travis, the proclaimers and big music-era simple minds too.

honorary mentions to franz ferdinand's 00s albums and the hits of texas and hue and cry.

Teetotaller here but voted Nazareth anyway

the phantom flim-flammer (Matt #2), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 11:11 (two years ago)

Rod Stewart is about as Scottish General Tso's Chicken.

i don't think i generally listen to Scottish bands drunk but have been drunk a few times in recent months while playing Empires & Dance so shout out to Simple Minds. Would also maybe have voted SAHB had it been an option.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 11:24 (two years ago)

SAHB or J&MC for me.

mark e, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 11:34 (two years ago)

with music streaming and wearable technology maybe we are coming close to the point where it's possible to get data on the average blood alcohol level of people listening to specific Scottish bands. Just a guess, but Raintown by Deacon Blue feels like an album that is disproportionately likely to be listened to by people who have been drinking

he thinks it's chinese money (soref), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 11:49 (two years ago)

Lol:
Why did I think McLusky were Scottish?
Why did I think Nazareth were American?

Belle & Sebas... aye, that'll be right.

Plastic Cowboy, Policeman etc good starting points

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 11:55 (two years ago)

I think Deacon Blue are like a drunk version of Prefab Sprout, similar vibe but less restrained/precise/considered, a bit more gauche and intemperate. I can't imagine wanting to listen to Prefab Sprout when drunk (and they're not Scottish anyway).

he thinks it's chinese money (soref), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 12:13 (two years ago)

Yeah this run of Yummy Fur singles / b-sides

Plastic Cowboy / Flapy Clown Disco / Chinese Bookie
Policeman / 70s / Car Crash
Supermarket / The Career Saver

is their peak, and was well-represented on the best-of compilation "Piggy Wings" a few years back.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 12:23 (two years ago)

Definitely Nazareth. If you are a belligerent drunk, "Hair of the Dog" is your jam.

Jesus & Mary Chain is the first one I thought of, and probably the most frequent, considering how many decades of extreme drunken listening I have under my belt -- Darklands is a key part to the drunk listening discography

sarahell, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 17:51 (two years ago)

Kill Surf City is positively anthemic

sarahell, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 17:53 (two years ago)

imo this is peak drunk scottish (i know nothing about scotland but this is a good approximation of my personal maudlin drunk vibes)

Arab Strap are often a maudlin drunk band, but one of their best songs ("Trippy") is about an acid trip.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 18:25 (two years ago)

i will have to check that out!! thx for the tip

the late great, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 18:27 (two years ago)

just remembered : king boy d is scottish.
i often drop some JAMMs on after a few drinks.
their stuff, as opposed to the KLF, hits better when the blood has a few measures of booze in it.

voting arab strap cuz they are the best of the bands here but also maybe a bad idea to get drunk to, mental health wise

The Vaselines? Getting drunk w/someone you like and listening to the Vaselines sounds like a good time.

i'd fucking move there if the old firm weren't so boring

"Now your messing with a...son of a bitch."

I was surprised as a teenager to find out that Nazareth was from Scotland as "Hair of the Dog" was about as redneck a rocker tune as you could get. I figured they were from Arkansas.

I voted Arab Strap out of the choices but I would have included Gerry Rafferty — a lot of his songs are about being sad and drunk, as was he himself much of the time.

i once got roped into doing this 'tartan day' event in new york which involved a series of events aimed at encouraging americans to visit scotland. i got endless requests to play the proclaimers but 1) didn't have any of their music and 2) wouldn't have played it even if i had. numerous people told me i was a traitor to my country.

i have a really good proclaimers story but it is 100% NSFW.

stirmonster, Sunday, 13 August 2023 22:40 (two years ago)

Back in the EzBoard days, I posted occasionally on a mostly Scottish board. They referred to such Americanisms as "Tartan day" as "shortbread Scottishism."
