Cat Stevens "Wild World"

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Police, "One World (not Three)"

dleone (dleone), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Good fucking question - nothing beats a skipping hi-hat man. My pick is the entirity of 'Marquee Moon' by Television. Ficca's work across the whole album is incredible, pulling out trick after trick (I've always wondered why he faded into the shade so badly on 'Adventure'), and his hi-hat work in particular is a delight. The hat on 'See No Evil' is just stupid.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Costello "Imagination (Is A Powerful Deceiver)"

when the drummer suddenly goes into 16th notes at the beginning of the 2nd verse like he's just making it up as he goes along (which he probably was) i just DIE, so perfect

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Riddle of the Eighties - fIREHOSE

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

astrud gilberto - "light my fire"
the way he stops and waits and then starts again when you don't expect him to play... still amazing after many many listens.

joao vich, Monday, 2 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

oh fucking word up on Marquee Moon, fuck guitar heroism, that's a total drum heroics record.

oh shit, and too many Hurley moments to mention.

also, "Birdland".

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

theme from 'shaft' !

zebedee, Monday, 2 December 2002 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Stewart Copeland on Peter Gabriel's "Red Rain". Andy Anderson (The Cure) on "Birdmad Girl" and live versions "100 Years" on The Top tour - he played with rippled hi's and tree trunks, it was the loudest, fullest sound you can get. Pure Chic.

Chris Ott, Monday, 2 December 2002 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They're programmed, but the hi hats in Paperclip People's "The Climax" drive the whole track. Great dynamic shifts in this track, too, normally hi hats just ride along to subdivide the rhythm.

Brian Miller, Monday, 2 December 2002 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

programmed counts!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the rapture!

tony bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Great question. Stephen Morris' double-time hi-hat is one of my favorite sounds in the world. And then, of course, can't forget Howard Grimes on Al Green's records.

Aaron W, Monday, 2 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

AFX, Track 8, Analogue Bubblebath III. My favorite electronic hi-hat sound.

Chris Ott, Monday, 2 December 2002 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Martin of Medeski Martin and Wood owns the tasty hi-hit lick these days. Organic, great light touch and bounce, but also very powerful and sometimes dizzying with the polyrhythmic flares...and this is just what he's doin' on the HI HAT. Anybody who's heard their speed-up/slow-down super-jam "Bubblehouse" might be able to back me up on this one.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking minutemen drummer (NEVER can remember his name) on "theater is the life of you" in particular - the syncopated kickdrum/hi-hat hits get me every time - but really all of double nickels

by the way, i guess i'll introduce myself. my name is jake, i go to school in portland oregon, and i lurked here for a while until i gradually started coming out of the woodwork. i like rock-critic rock, chart hip-hop, and jazz (roughly)

brains (cerybut), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacbo, his name is George Hurley, and I agree with you, though I go for the hi-hat/bass duel of "Games".

see yourself
i know
you know
it's your ego

Chris Ott, Monday, 2 December 2002 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Commit the name George Hurley to memory, as he is the greatest drummer since Keith Moon.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Costello and his drummer again for "No Action"

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

overall, i'll take bill stevenson over george hurley...

the only high hat ref i can think of his is "all-o-gistics" which is kinda annoying but can now be appreciated as some sort of bizarre prog fusion weirdo rant. road rally does indeed rule though.

gygax!, Monday, 2 December 2002 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins - "1979".. it's the standard eighth-note closed pattern (it might be a drum machine... I'm not sure), but it has some very subtle accents, and that's what's primarily responsible for the push/pull of the song.

Curtis Stephens, Monday, 2 December 2002 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I second 1979! for so long i felt like I was the only one in the world who new. i was so lonely!
some other pix:
Aphex twin - acrid avid jam shred -
Sausage - prelude to fear -

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 2 December 2002 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the "1979" groove is Jimmy playing drums along with a drum machine loop. And that's a good call...very tasty.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The invention of the TR-808 is a great moment for hi-hats, and music in general.

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

a great moment in hihats = me getting my pair of zildjian 14" quick beat hihats with brilliant finish!
oh, and the little hihat part that comes in behind the chorus(?) of "grindin" is so delicate and sublte and magical. (the claps and snape have already been mentioned on ILN as well, and rightly so!)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi,

Every Modest Mouse song ever.

, Monday, 2 December 2002 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well several people beat me to Hurley so I'll note Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division, and Everlong by the Foo Fighters.

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

every moment that Vinnie Colaiuta gets behind a drum set.

bahtology, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Buddy Rich's hi-hat intro to every uptempo tune, where he was muting the cymbals with his left hand fingers, just washy and funky and classic.

Kenwood Dennard's solo on Maceo Parker's 'Shake Everything You Got' has a lot of great hi-hat moments and subtleties.

Telefon Tel Aviv has lots of great hi-hat stuff.

I third 1979 btw, it sounds so simple but it's so hard to play with that same feel.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Marquee Moon quite different from Adventure?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah how could you forget countless max roach/blakey intros to cookers

brains (cerybut), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'Is Marquee Moon quite different from Adventure'

Yeah, different, less urgent, less alive (I was talking specifically about the drums which seem subdued and sometimes pedestrian on 'Adventure'), like he's run out of ideas or been told to keep it simple. The rhythm patterns are less showy and flash, though maybe they might be more solid for that, but they don't take me by surprise or accentuate and decorate the melody as much as the playing on 'Moon' does. Certinly, the 'look at me' hi-hat is gone or at least is much less prominent... I'm not sure now, I need to dig it out and crank the levels up but I always have this question about the difference in drumming on the two records.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

omg 777-9311 totally oenz this thread!

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

omg 777-9311 totally OWNZ this thread!

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Tears For Fears: 'Bad Man's Song'
- a track that would also go on my guilty pleasures list - just about in the middle of that song the music breaks down and the hihat goes: ts-g-ts-g-ts-g-ts-g-ts-g-ts-g-tssssiiii in the most delicate way. Ahhhh ......

And also: Lenny Daft Kravitz: 'Always On The Run' for one of the most straight and square, yet rocketeeringly funky hihats ever played...

Jay K (Jay K), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the hi-hat thread has been done before but we talked about derrick may and timbaland.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahh - it's been nagging at me and I finally remembered what the song was (I think) .... "Stigmata Martyr"

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the residents! they wore high hats.
i'm so very very sorry.

Cinematic Orchestra (J Swinscoe)--"Durian"

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone mentioned that moment in "Buffalo Stance" by Neneh Cherry where she formerly introduces the hi-hat? Classic.

Beyond that, I'd say the intro to "Love Removal Machine" by the Cult.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan Myers from Devo is a member of the hi-hat aristocracy. Many good ones but "Satisfaction" is as good an example as any.

The Redd 47 Ronin (Ken L), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Sly Stone "In Time" for the way the hi-hat slips in with the drum machine beat and for the sick barks.

RIVETS

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

very true that song would be so different without the pause.

Charlie Watts is the hi hat master. I know it annoys some how he pulls off his hats on the downbeat but the shit he does on his hi hats is amazing. . .Tumbling Dice

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Personally, I always felt the greatest moment in hi-hat was during the solo in Voices Inside My Head. Then I relaized it was overdubbed. But, does that really matter?
