Corey Hanson: Western Cum

Icky title. Best guitar album to come out in years. Anybody else heard it?

It's Neil Young and Crazy Horse crossed with Built To Spill, except with better guitars.

So glad to see someone post about this album! I've thought about it a few times now, but figured it wouldn't get a lot of traction. I've been a fan of Wand (Hanson's main band) all along, but he has really hit a stride in the last few years. If you dig this and haven't yet heard Wand's 2022 live album, Spiders in the Rain, do it right away. I suspect it will hit a similar pleasure center for you if you dig Western Cum.

totally agree about the production - anemic and overcompressed. strange that this wasn't addressed when the tones themselves seem so lush. if i was capable of riffs this fine i'd want them to be presented in the most appetising way possible!

(also, if a mod could change the title to Cory Hanson, that would be great)

it is good! and, yes, the name is terrible. if I hadn't already been following him because of Wand, I'm pretty confident I would have ignored it as well.

His voice does have a reedy Neil Young quality in a few spots, although his singing ain't too strong (I know you gotta work with what you got). Some nice riffage, but songwriting not so much. Agree about the flat production & terrible title.

i like the record, don't really care either way about the title. it does have a bit of the same thing that garcia peoples had for me which is like this is really fun guitar-based rock music with lots of cool riffs and good playing and whatnot, but for lack of a better term the stakes seem incredibly low. there's not much in the way of emotion or aggression or anything like that and i think that holds me back.

Not sure what I think of the new Wand just yet, didn't expect so much of it to be so.... mid-90s Radiohead. It's not bad and I need more time with it, it's just different from what I expected.

Gotta say that this year’s record has really wormed its way into my brain. Woke up with “Joker” in my head the other day, and now whenever I see Lou Reed’s name, I sing in my head “You were a prince and a fighter….and you were a tai chi master.” it’s kind of an incredible record imho.

I've been meaning to buy this, since I loved Western Cum. Maybe I'll do it today for Bandcamp Friday.

He just put out his I Love People demos on Bandcamp - some lovely versions here! I saw him do two sets in Philly recently (one solo, one with Wand) and couldn't believe he was playing to just like 75 people. He's come leaps and bounds since those early Wand albums.

re: demos, i think changing "I love people who collect works of art" to "I love people, I think they are works of art" was the right move

these sound great tho

the only complaint i have about this record is how abruptly it seems to end. "On the Rocks" feels to me like he is getting a second wind. not sure i can put my finger on why, but it doesn't feel like a closer song to me. the record keeps ending and i think, "that's it?" 37 minutes passes so quickly. but it's ok because i just keep restarting it from the top
