This was a 10 minute exercise and only from memory so I am sure I would modify at least a 1/3rd of these if I had a photo of every album I’ve listened to in front of me. Then again, what remains in your mind is probably a better snapshot. Obviously not ranked

Fucking hell, Steve McQueen is a glaring omission from my list.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:33 (two years ago)

oooh this list is interesting. One Bedroom??? I didn't know anyone else liked that album, much less put it on a top 47 list

frogbs, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:33 (two years ago)

Not seeing it in any list, I was questioning whether this was really ILM for a moment

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:34 (two years ago)

Blueberry Boat 😀

Bee OK, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:35 (two years ago)

Not seeing Steve McQueen on a list so far, I was questioning whether this was really ILM

Most of these choices come from “I remember listening to this album frequently at a point in my life and thinking it was the best thing since sliced bread” and one bedroom slots into that category with ease. I burnt that one out in my Toyota Corolla CD player, didn’t change the disc for probably a month

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:36 (two years ago)

^^^ugh whoops, I thought the first “Steve McQueen” post didn’t post, my bad

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:37 (two years ago)

I’m going to be boring and go with CAN because how can I not?

Cool list tho

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:43 (two years ago)

I thought I was going to cop some flack for this being a boring predominately 90’s-2020’s indie list… which says bad things about all you complimenters

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 03:46 (two years ago)

the pick i'm most baffled by is the new abnormal, i know rym loves that but i do not like it much at all, and i'm someone who loves comedown machine and tyranny

ufo, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 08:02 (two years ago)

I don’t go on run at all, I just think it’s a perfect pop rock record, it’s Casablanca’s best vocal effort (straight from the first song his vocals reach another level), the hooks are homier, the highs are higher than anything previous, and the lyrical content is exactly what I’m looking for. I was ready to not like the album, but it consistently knocks me out and deservedly earns a spot here

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 08:41 (two years ago)

top 4 we’re astral weeks, big pink, mcqueen, and on the beach, think i went with on the beach

is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 12:54 (two years ago)

Interesting! Not a lot of my favorites on here (9?) but more intriguing, lots of albums from bands I like, just not the albums I would have picked. I like it!

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 12:56 (two years ago)

Hard. But Neil's On the Beach

nostormo, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 14:31 (two years ago)

This will be boring if on the beach wins (which it probably will)

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:02 (two years ago)

Since nobody will probably vote for it - its Cass McCombs "Catacombs"

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:06 (two years ago)

Torn among Steve McQueen, Spirit of Eden and Astral Weeks.

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:10 (two years ago)

Future Days for me, although I don't listen to it often. I think almost every list had a Can album? But often different albums?

Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable POST (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:11 (two years ago)

Future days is pretty ubiquitous across the polls (rightfully so). I picked future days with my brain, outwinning my heart which said “monster movie”. But no one really picks monster movie for the album, they pick it for its last song so it just didn’t work for this kind of poll

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:13 (two years ago)

I think Monster Movie is great but maybe still a bit too garagey for the main Can pick. Future Days got the dreamy guitar and futuristic synths gliding along together. A bit more avant but still accessible. Does anyone listen to the second side of Tago Mago?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:21 (two years ago)

Oooooh this is the first list that actually has some "albums I despise" in it ("The Doldrums", that particular Grubbs solo album tho I love Grubbs generally, Joan Of Arc, "Blueberry Boat"), very interesting!

I love The Sea And Cake tho and especially that first Prekop solo album

Snoopy is a cat, who lives in a cage (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:29 (two years ago)

"Soon Over Babaluma" is Can's best album.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:30 (two years ago)

I have enjoyed Aumgn exactly once in my life, but that one time was an absolute treat. Even when I’m not particularly enjoying side 2 of Tago magi, it’s still interesting enough to keep on. Future days can glide by on its first 2 minutes before the beat comes in alone, absolutely otherworldly sounds. It truly cannot be underrated it’s such a tight package of originality and sonic bliss.

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:33 (two years ago)

How can you despise that grubbs solo album? Its like the least offensive album on here!

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:33 (two years ago)

The doldrums, Joan or arc, blueberry boat, yeah fair enough they are abrasive, real “love it or hate it” material

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:34 (two years ago)

A couple of these should’ve been on my list!

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:47 (two years ago)

Cool to see Little Wings turn up!

Voted for Deerhunter

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:49 (two years ago)

I’m not sure if I picked the right little wings album, but I couldn’t write in “little wings - discography” so it’ll have to do.

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:55 (two years ago)

I liked your list Raymond, what would you have put on yours?
And fgti, I found your list the most similar to mine in taste, I thought you might be on the other side of the love/hate relationship on those albums you mentioned

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:57 (two years ago)

Nice to see Th' Faith Healers on here, I like that one.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:09 (two years ago)

How can you despise that grubbs solo album? It's like the least offensive album on here!

It dates from a time when I was buying CDs, and was also the biggest Camofleur fan in the world, and I saw a copy of that album at the CD shop and snapped it up and it wasn't cheap, and it sounded like a profound waste of my time and money and I was very annoyed!

Snoopy is a cat, who lives in a cage (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:14 (two years ago)

In a different mood I might have included these picks of yours:

Ariel Pink (yes, yes, I know)
Deerhunter
The Fiery Furnaces
My Bloody Valentine
Tortoise
Yo La Tengo

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:15 (two years ago)

It would have been a different YLT record, but nonetheless

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:16 (two years ago)

Oh, you almost had me at 94diskont but Oval just kept making even better albums. I think it has to be The Pod for me. Not the best on the list but a hardcore sentimental fave that I need to see get some lovin' here

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:23 (two years ago)

My fandom of camafleur is actually what brought me to this website, googling about it in 2013 (I’m young). Story checks out. The grubbs solo album was this perfect cross section of my love for 90’s Chicago post-rocky-whatever-grubbs-McEntire-O’rourke-Pajo scene, and my love of piano ambient. Loved seeing those two worlds combine. The album carried me through university, everyone assignment was done under its spell.

I haven’t listened to the doldrums for quite a while because of “yes yes I know”, but it’s undeniably a phenomenal album and I’m happy to divorce the man from the work. Early 2000’s Ariel seems like a much different character from his post-round and round era.

94 diskont was really just a track vote for “do while”. That’s the sonic world my brain wants to live in forever

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:37 (two years ago)

“Happy” probably the wrong word

H.P, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:37 (two years ago)

Number of albums heard: 16

Favourite: Astral Weeks, but On the Beach is close

Least-favourite:Pinkerton, it's middling power-pop

Nicest surprise: Blueberry Boat

Unheard, but most want to hear:

no one really picks monster movie for the album, they pick it for its last song

I think side 1 of that record is at least as good as "Yoo Doo Right".

Does anyone listen to the second side of Tago Mago?

I guess you mean sides 3 and 4? I often listen to the whole thing.

"Soon Over Babaluma" is Can's best album.

Can't stand the song Irmin sings.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 24 August 2023 16:29 (two years ago)

Unheard, but most want to hear: Small Change, but it's vanished from my streaming

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 24 August 2023 16:30 (two years ago)

Small change is on tidal.

Not disagreeing with your assessment of pinkerton, but it’s a great album IN SPITE of it flirting with middling power-pop. I don’t think it is middling at all, though it does have a few moments

H.P, Friday, 25 August 2023 00:45 (two years ago)

Since nobody will probably vote for it - its Cass McCombs "Catacombs"

― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, August 22, 2023 5:06 PM (four days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Oops, I voted for it too!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Sunday, 27 August 2023 03:05 (two years ago)

I still get a lot out of Oval, most of the records. (Pre-hiatus at least.) So I'll take the opportunity to pick that and sidestep any hand-wringing over whether it's still okay to pick The Doldrums, from which turn-of-the-century me also got a huge amount of mileage.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 27 August 2023 04:22 (two years ago)

My only experience of Synesthesia was listening to oval’s systemisch while in a hypnogogic state. I could see the geometry of the music. Shapes came in and our of existence along the waves of the tracks. Popp really tuned into some mystic frequencies with those two albums, beautiful sounds and movements

Highest ranked non-canon albums being ”is a woman” and “green” is not what I expected
