11 of my favorites! Nice to see Elliott Smith pop up on one of these for the first time (?).

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 15:25 (one year ago)

nice! may i ask which ones are your faves?

and yeah, think it's the first time. i'm as surprised as you are!

tremolo, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 15:30 (one year ago)

I'd probably pick "Either/Or" as my fave Smith, but that and s/t are both faves. Of the rest here, I think I counted ... Mingus, Bowie, GBV, LCD, Morphine, Neil Young, Nick Drake, Talking Heads, Beach Boys, Kinks? Something like that. Any of those could end up on some hypothetical list of mine.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 15:37 (one year ago)

either/or is probably my third favourite elliott album - i don't enjoy it as a full album as much as his first two, but the high points are REALLY high (speed trials, ballad of big nothing... my god) and i like it much, much more than anything after it.

cool to meet someone with similar taste - well met :)

tremolo, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 15:50 (one year ago)

Too many good ones to decide right now. Definitely going to have to flip some coins

hey tremolo, welcome to ILM.

out of your list it's Lodger for me.
one of those albums that even after many many listens still sends shivers all over ..
i originally had it on gatefold vinyl, but it had a nasty scratch during the opening track.
so, took it back, and found that the replacement had the same scratch in exactly the same place.
so gave up and put up with it.
i recorded the album to cassette and then used that as my default playback option via walkmans etc ..
now when i listen to it via my revised cd editions i miss the scratch sound.

still, it was my entry album to the Bowie catalogue and so for that alone, it's one of the best albums ever.

Dr John

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:42 (one year ago)

no phoebe bridgers ?

xheugy eddy (D-40), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:43 (one year ago)

Tempted by a few (closest runners-up probably L'Rain and Peasant) but it HAS to be Plantasia.

emil.y, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:50 (one year ago)

Would’ve voted Phoebe Bridgers if it was an option

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:54 (one year ago)

I didn’t see Plantasia before voting dr john but em is right. That’s the best one in here.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:55 (one year ago)

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
attention: imago

you also have Benji here. Phoebe's cover of "You Missed my Heart" is wonderful (I know this isn't on Benji, but it could be).

pretty sure food is my favorite doom album as well. he sounds best over his own beats

is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:28 (one year ago)

Peepee Bridgis is your legacy. Your monkeys paw

Banjo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:32 (one year ago)

Is THE LODGER David Bowie's best record?

yes

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:35 (one year ago)

exactly.

mark e, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:36 (one year ago)

SO annoyed i forgot Bright Phoebus by Lal + Mike Waterson. that's gotta be in my top ten even though i've only heard it on youtube. if anyone has a digital copy i would be eternally grateful if they could furnish me with it

this realisation has absolutely nothing to do with phoebe bridgers btw

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:37 (one year ago)

imo, tremolo has a poster of PB on the kitchen door. They fire bottle rockets at it from the couch while listening to extremely similar music.

actual veggie mexican pizza received (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:38 (one year ago)

this implies a relatively open floorplan

thank you mark!

it really is a special album. i feel like it gets so little love compared to the other 70s albums. there's not really a bad song on it - maybe Red Sails and Yassassin, but they're not even bad, i just usually skip them for some reason. pretty far out that you got the same scratch twice!!

i've actually sworn off listening to music at all given that, y'know, that's what PB makes. i just look at album covers and imagine what the songs might sound like. i do not know what a bottle rocket is except that it's a consumable weapon in EarthBound

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:46 (one year ago)

pretty sure food is my favorite doom album as well. he sounds best over his own beats

so true, doom was a consummate beatmaker :')

"average MCs is like a tv blooper/MF Doom he's like DB Cooper" is my favourite rap line of all time and it's not even close

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:48 (one year ago)

listening to a brand new Blank Banshee album right now!

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:13 (one year ago)

I had never listened to Duster. I am enjoying it - thank you! However, I read their wiki, which led me to the wiki for slowcore. I don't even want to tell you who shows up there.

Banjo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:19 (one year ago)

it's obviously Talking Heads - Fear of Music, the best album by one of the best bands ever

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:41 (one year ago)

I wanted to vote for something that wasn't on my own list so went with Plantasia

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:56 (one year ago)

this list contains my two favourite albums of 2017! peasant was my #1 then but i'll go l'rain now. will also pause to observe what a sick and true choice 'hex' is, and it's almost autumn which is the season for it, nothing else conveys what it does so well. also that's a brave and commendable ween choice

imago, Friday, 25 August 2023 09:27 (one year ago)

it was hard for me to choose between peasant and nothing important - i went for peasant just because it's a little more diverse and less of a monolith, therefore better for casual listening, but it's not really "better" than nothing important. i love richard, but i'm not really into his last 3 albums (with the BIG exception of "the hermit" on the ruby chain, which is basically an album within an album). 2020 left me especially cold

glad to see a fellow hex enjoyer! it's funny, i've always listened to it in autumn but somehow have never made the connection to the season. to me it's so vividly desertlike that i can't really think of it as sounding autumnal (cold, wet etc). maybe that's because of the blood meridian connection, idk

white pepper's the best ween album! quebec is close and the mollusk is a little further behind. it's just so perfectly produced, it's full of addictive sounds and takes me back to a much happier time. "exactly where i'm at" is my favourite ween song. just wish they'd left bananas and blow off the album.

not sure if this disqualifies me from being a trve ween head

tremolo, Friday, 25 August 2023 12:37 (one year ago)

I voted stratosphere and bee thousand on other threads so had no issue going right for cure for pain

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:43 (one year ago)

Tremolo curious if you might like a bunch of stuff on my list given your indie leanings. I can guide you. Let me teach you

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:45 (one year ago)

The Lodger wins.

atonar, Friday, 25 August 2023 12:47 (one year ago)

i'll gladly check it out, hot kirby. just gotta actually do my job for a sec so i don't get fired

god i hate being employed

tremolo, Friday, 25 August 2023 12:50 (one year ago)

2020 grew on me fwiw! Seeing him do some of my less favourite songs live solo and do them well was a big moment. Who knew Freshers Ball was a good song etc

White Pepper def where Ween made a giant leap forward imo (although I'd have Quebec as even better). Not a trve head either mind

imago, Friday, 25 August 2023 12:56 (one year ago)

I stopped counting the overlap after it got too high. I think I well established that THE LODGER (as it’s known here) is my fave Bowie. Another case where the first album I hear by somebody becomes my fave - imprinting on it like a baby duck.

OTOH, I voted for nostalgia. My family owned a mold release wax chemical business in 1/8 of a industrial building in Laguna Canyon (we sold to the early OC/LA fiberglass manufacturers that made surfboards, boats, custom cars, etc.) In the early 70s my dad and my brother would be working late at night with the big roll-up door open and Marty Robbins cranked so loud that you could hear it bounce off the hills

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:08 (one year ago)

Yeah that sounds like an effective way to imprint music on a young mind

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:13 (one year ago)

I've inexplicably had "Rapp Snitch Knishes" cycling through my head all week, surely a sign that the cosmos wants me to vote DOOM.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 25 August 2023 23:27 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 26 August 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 18

Favourite: Something Else by the Kinks over Lodger

Least-favourite: Violent Femmes

Nicest surprise: Gris-Gris or New Skin for the Old Ceremony

Unheard, but most want to hear: Johnny Cash

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 26 August 2023 19:45 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 27 August 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

Great vote variety here. More interesting to see what didn’t get voted for. Sorry Alice/workingsman dead, you deserved one

H.P, Sunday, 27 August 2023 00:27 (one year ago)

forgot to comment on the results - really cool to see what people went for. i didn't vote, but i would've gone for good morning spider.

one thing that's been a very pleasant surprise has been seeing all the love for GBV! it's not that i think they're exactly obscure, but i wouldn't have expected to see their albums on so many of your lists. my faves of theirs are probably "tractor rape chain", "wished i was a giant" and "my valuable hunting knife"
