Figured most folks around here aren't familiar with my favorite albums by The Wild Magnolias or Hypnotic Clambake, so I approached my first ever poll by looking at the widest swaths of discs on my shelves. Fleetwood Mac vs. Miles Davis fite!

Rebirth Brass Band is the most important American band.

I've seen them countless times but I think the absolute best was one night at Fred Kemp's Lounge, across the street from the Magnolia projects on LaSalle. Incredibly powerful music and dancing in an incredibly tiny bar.

Here's my Rebirth video of the day:

Oooh, I like this twist, it's a tough one!

Memorable times seeing Rebirth:

-At Joe's Cozy Corner (tiny bar in the Treme that was a musician hangout, no longer exists)

-In Chicago at Fitzgerald's (I think?), my first time

-At least five times in Madison, opened for them twice

-At Howling Wolf when someone (it was either Kabuki or Trombone Shorty sitting in on trumpet) played a lick so hot that one of my band members threw his drink on the ground

-At my first real second line in New Orleans

-Early on at an empty club in New Orleans (can't remember which), when I'm pretty sure Derr1ck T@bb (snare) had a bullet lodged in his shoulder before going to the hospital (?!)

-In Austin at Stubb's, maybe not the greatest set ever but a great vibe and it was amazing that they happened to be there when we were in town to play a wedding

Billie Holiday is hard to argue with, although my heart belongs to Debbie Harry.

^^^ yep, this is exactly the kind of battle I'm looking for!

I could get by with "only one" album by all of these artists (that I know), except Miles, I need at least five Miles albums, maybe ten

I've never heard of either Brass Band bands

I admit I own zero Dirty Dozen albums, and that I'm a post-'94 brass band fan (i.e. when Rebirth released Rollin', that's when the modern era starts for me).

However, whenever Rebirth does an arrangement of a Dirty Dozen tune, they turbocharge it and it rules:

Saw Hypnotic Clambake live a few times and they were amazing. I might have to pick up another copy of Frozen Live Vol. 1 on CD. The only song of theirs I really remember is Niagara Falls, although Ant Man and Chef Mobie's Gumbo Gator are peaking through the door of my memory.

Yay, a Clamfan! The lyrics are pretty silly sometimes (often, if you can't hang with silly) but the melodies are extremely catchy, and every iteration of the band contained excellent musicians. Frozen Live is when they had the late Billy Constable, and although I didn't always think they needed banjo he was stellar. "Black Wedding" is a great piece of music:

I feel like most of these acts made too many records. Roxy Music, for knowing when to stop.

I looked at this thread and was like “I do?”

the new drip king (DJP), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 01:24 (one year ago)

No, then Siouxsie might have made the list.

This was interesting to me, top vote getters about what I anticipated but also some single vote surprises. I listen to more R&B than rock as I get older, especially the New Orleans variety, so Dr. John and Snooks getting nods was nice.

I'd like to have a beer with the Brave Combo and Suburbs voters.
