Voted for Search For The New Land because it's one of those albums that makes everyone who hears it say, "Fuck — this is LEE MORGAN? The Sidewinder guy?"

Brass Construction yay!

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:37 (one year ago)

Amazing list, I had to cut Hank Mobley and Billy Cobham from mine, so one of those. Mahavishnu is up there too.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:44 (one year ago)

excellent list, voted Mwandishi

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:44 (one year ago)

First time I took mushrooms one of the participants put on Inner Mounting Flame and I fled outside to listen to traffic going by. I like it fine otherwise.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 21:52 (one year ago)

What a great list. "Hot Buttered Soul" may be the first one that would definitely be on a list of mine that I've not seen make an appearance on any other list yet.

I've made a spotify playlist with every album on it (except the Ornette isn't available)

Going with Out To Lunch here, Spectrum is a somewhat distant 2nd.

I pretty much knew I'd vote for Ayler from the start, and I did. But I love a bunch of these.

Love this list.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:27 (one year ago)

I'd happily spend time with any of these albums, but went with Spectrum as the personal pick that I got when I was super young and have spent the most time with.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:29 (one year ago)

OMG, some of my favorite jazz albums ever up in here...Betty Davis was making a case for herself but I think Mwandishi is the winner

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 23:33 (one year ago)

god, so many great albums here i can't decide

i've been on a real mahavishnu orchestra kick lately. i'm going through every live recording i've been able to track down of the original lineup (about 90, give or take a few). hell of a live act.

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:07 (one year ago)

Brass Construction because its also one of my top 50 ever

you can see me from westbury white horse, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:12 (one year ago)

It’s between Giant Steps and Brilliant Corners, tough choice.

o. nate, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 02:47 (one year ago)

Went for Out to Lunch. It's neither the jazz album I have listened to the most, I hesitated to include it or Iron Man in my list, but I have memories of being glued to the speaker and waiting anxiously for every note.
High five for Curtis, Betty Davis, Henderson, Art Blakey and all that post-bop. I need to listen to Electric Byrd, cause I love Ethiopian Knights.

Nabozo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 07:34 (one year ago)

It's great to see some people also love Brass Construction. Its a terrific album.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 08:38 (one year ago)

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:50 (one year ago)

It's Roger Troutman's (from Zapp) solo album!

It really is. I've had it on vinyl since the 90s when I found one. I think it's better than the Zapp albums.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:11 (one year ago)

Im listening to it now. Great stuff. I've definitely heard "so ruff, so tuff" before. Or was it sampled in a Dre production?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:53 (one year ago)

it's sampled on Paul's Boutique!

I'd bet that a fair bit of the artists in this poll have been sampled.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:09 (one year ago)

Xpost Sleeve:oh yeah I thought it was a g-funk at first

Flamenco-ish guitar in "Max Axe" is a pleasant surprise. What a banger that is

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:10 (one year ago)

I just realised I haven't voted! I might vote for the brilliant Mutiny album as its the best pfunk spin-off album and it deserves a vote.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:16 (one year ago)

I’ve only heard (and indeed owned) two of these: Isaac Hayes and Rick James. Voting Rick James - that’s a great album.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:33 (one year ago)

Listened to the Brass Construction album today. Forgot how awesome that one is.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:19 (one year ago)

It really is. Its a smoking funk album. I wish I'd included a BT Express album too. Have you heard them, mike?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:35 (one year ago)

amazing how cheap those great Brass Construction LPs are on Discogs

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:40 (one year ago)

I have the 1st one on CD which was purchased in the 90s. I have II on lp found cheap 2nd hand late 90s. Sadly with shipping LPs from the US aren't cheap anymore.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:48 (one year ago)

Ive never heard BT Express, similar super funky voib to Brass Construction?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:51 (one year ago)

Similar funky proto-disco. I bet you have heard them but didn't know it.

I really should have included this BT Express album

I guarantee you, that you know the title song.

Back Door Santa lol

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 25 August 2023 20:08 (one year ago)

That sounds either very rude or its a reverse santa stealing the presents!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 20:41 (one year ago)

Not that NOW is the time but I'd love to do a poll one day of (my headcanon of) disco funk albums. Superficially funk but with an obvious disco/chant/12"-friendly kick. Imo there's two strands - America (Brass Construction, Slave, Brick, late 70s War, Con Funk Shun, BT Express, Mass Production, Crown Heights Affair) and then there is its descendant, early Britfunk my beloved (Hi-Tension, Light of the World, Atmosfear, Incognito, Freeez, Beggar & Co., Linx, Beggar & Co). What unites them is that they all made at least one knockout album (if not in some cases more).

you can see me from westbury white horse, Friday, 25 August 2023 20:58 (one year ago)

You should do it. Disco is way more popular on ILM than jazz and funk

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 21:06 (one year ago)

I'll keep it in mind for another time.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Friday, 25 August 2023 21:45 (one year ago)

Yeah, it probably would get lost just now.

I do have an all-time list of albums btw I made 2 years ago. I wouldn't dream of polling it (its 250 albums long) but if there was a thread where everyone posted their lists, just for posterity, I'd post it on that. Except I doubt anyone could care less about my top 250 albums!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 08:30 (one year ago)

grant green's alive is so good, sometimes think it is the best live record, and recorded in one evening? in a club? what a night out that must have been

Florin Cuchares, Saturday, 26 August 2023 09:08 (one year ago)

Most of the Grant Green live albums released are smoking hot. Must've been amazing to see him live.

I should have included Jimmy Smith - Root Down. Would have loved to have been there.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 10:04 (one year ago)

Yeah, Grant Green's Live at the Lighthouse is equally awesome.
(his solos from that era are a little samey, but I can't get enough of that vibe, so I'm fine with the monotony)

enochroot, Saturday, 26 August 2023 10:43 (one year ago)

If it ain't broke...

I hope there's more 70s live grant green still to come. I need to hear it.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 12:38 (one year ago)

If anyone reading hasn't heard the Sweat Band and Mutiny albums then they should as its the best of the pfunk spin offs. I'm sad I cut the Quazar album off my list too as thats top notch pfunk.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 18:56 (one year ago)

What about Fatback Band - Keep On Steppin'?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czdcjphhBHA

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 19:16 (one year ago)

I should just have done one jazz and one funk poll

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 08:17 (one year ago)

out of the ones i havent listened to; what would you recommend?

I have an objection. Brass Construction sounds pretty festive. From the name and presence on this list, I was expecting jazz. I would like my refund please.

The title is a homage to John Peel's Festive Fifty

I stole the vinyl collection of my father since he doesn’t even have a turntable and I have “hot buttered soul” amongst those records and have never listened to it. I should probably get on it.

Freddie Hubbard - Straight Life 0
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Free For All 0
Archie Shepp - Fire Music 0
Andrew Hill - Black Fire 0
Big John Patton - Let Em Roll 0
Sly Stone - High On You 0
Slave - The Concept, 0
Cameo - Cardiac Arrest 0
Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different 0
Pharaoh Sanders - Love Is All 0
Bootsy Collins - Player Of The Year 0
Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes - Expansions 0

I'd poll them but I fear ILM is sick of polls just now

It's remarkable how many got a vote though!

I put on 'Black Fire' yesterday when I was listening to Richard Davis albums after I heard about his passing (still prefer Point of Departure tbh, but both are great).

Jordan did you take part in the big jazz poll on ilm some years ago?

JAZZ IS LIKE HEROIN TO ME ! ! ! ~~~~ ILM POST-1945 JAZZ ALBUMS POLL - THE RESULTS COUNTDOWN (now counting top 25!)

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 8 September 2023 18:57 (one year ago)

No, I ignored all ILM ballot polls prior to the pandemic, lol

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2023 19:03 (one year ago)

you should take a look. It was a top 250.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 8 September 2023 19:12 (one year ago)

I mean yeah there are a lot of classic albums there, skimming it I've heard the majority of them, though obviously not all. I've given myself too many listening projects rn but maybe someday it would be good to hear what I haven't heard. :)

Listening to Open & Close now, I don't think I've ever heard it and it rules.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2023 19:32 (one year ago)

It does, and he has about a dozen albums just as great too.
