If you can't beat them....

From 1986 - 1988 I kept meticulous records of every record I bought. These are the 50 7"s, 12"s and LPs i added to my collection over that period. Quite a few were second hand but around 40 of the 50 were brand new releases at that time. Many of them were bargain bin 12's. The poll ends on Various – Techno! (The New Dance Sound Of Detroit) which I bought exactly 35 years ago to the day.

1. hell yes to this one, this is darn close to my ground zero as well but it looks like I might be a teeny bit older? (I will be 57 soon)

2. voted Seven Songs JUST BARELY over that fantastic (and still not reissued?) Chumbawamba 7"

The only one of these I bought at the time was S-Express, so I'll vote for that

Almost voted for Follow the Leader but went with RevCo because fuck it, that album slams so hard. Plus the conceit of a band basically no one outside Chicago had even heard of at that point releasing a double live album is hilarious.

Diamanda (the new remaster of this one is smashing), Laibach/23 Skidoo tied for 2nd place

atonar, Sunday, 27 August 2023 23:22 (one year ago)

there's some fucking bangers on this one

the S'Express album was the 2nd tape I ever bought with my own money

Last minute vote for Follow The Leader, as I definitely heard it during that same period. Very first rap longplayer I heard, in fact, as a tween. It sounded like the future!

ha! i wonder how many of those 6 failed to notice the actual title?

the real shocker imo is the number of votes for Dave Howard Singers

stirmonster, Monday, 28 August 2023 02:11 (one year ago)

I only know "I Am A Bunny", clearly I need to investigate

I voted Dave Howard! Great song, esp. the Dr Ruth version. Lyrics derived from Kurt Vonnegut I believe. I saw him supporting Swans once in London, above the Sugarcubes on the bill! Who, ironically, polled one more vote tham him here. Swans polled three votes less (and that album was recorded on that very same tour).

great coincidences.

that's not right; plenty of people outside Chicago knew them as Big Sexy Land had been a big seller across Europe already.
