I actually think about this question more than is good for me, and today's Space Poll Fever made me start writing stuff down. Can you spot the ringer?

Low but I want to vote for Pre-Millennium Tension

you can see me from westbury white horse, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:13 (two years ago)

After careful consideration the Tricky album that best encapsulates what I like about him is Nearly God

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:25 (two years ago)

Voting stereolab because I love the lab

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:26 (two years ago)

Stereolab for me too. I still remember how underrated that one was when it came out. It's one of their best.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:30 (two years ago)

Yeah it’s probably their best post dots and loops

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:32 (two years ago)

I came to that one late after 2 decades of thinking Dots & Loops was the be-all, but now I could listen to "Baby Lulu" for 24 hrs straight. xp!

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:35 (two years ago)

I’d probably rank it third after Peng and D&L, wont hold it against anyone who think it’s their best one.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:38 (two years ago)

Miles, but lots of great stuff.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 00:42 (two years ago)

If it weren’t for the stupid “Room Service” skit, disc one of that Zappa is probably the best example of what I like about him. Second disc gets pretty wanky though.

I can’t overstate how influential that Firesign was on young me. I can still quote most of it verbatim, but you don’t want to hear that.

I’m torn between Can and Miles.

Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable POST (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:29 (two years ago)

so hard

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:30 (two years ago)

Nice to see Sandinista! making someone else's list. I can still get lost in that record.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:34 (two years ago)

plenty of filler, better than Thriller

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:35 (two years ago)

ooh saucy!

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:36 (two years ago)

What possibly could be the ringer?!

Interesting to see Sound-Dust on both this list and table’s list…. I guess I gotta listen again

Voted Eno, that album rules

Snoopy is a cat, who lives in a cage (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:46 (two years ago)

Don't Crush That Dwarf is the ringer...the only comedy record I've seen on any of these lists. But it's amazing.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:55 (two years ago)

Soft Machine 2 is possibly the best thing evah, so that. : )

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 02:30 (two years ago)

Wow, 24 or 25 favorites of mine!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 02:47 (two years ago)

went with the Stones, i am what i am

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 02:58 (two years ago)

Exile on Main St. I think. It says I already voted

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 05:54 (two years ago)

Material!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 08:05 (two years ago)

quite a few favourites here, but i went with fear of music. i feel like it's somehow underrated in their discography. such wonderful pocket symphonies

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 08:18 (two years ago)

so many albums I love here, but ended up going for my third favourite soft machine LP

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 08:27 (two years ago)

Number of albums heard: 20, not counting the Smiths which songs I know, but not in this package

Favourite: Eno over On the Beach

Least-favourite: All Things Must Pass, though the Ween album was middling enough to discourage further exploration

Nicest surprise: Morton Feldman or Soft Machine

Unheard, but most want to hear: Bad Brains

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 24 August 2023 17:42 (two years ago)

Voted Eno/Fripp, but lots of great stuff again

Siegbran, Friday, 25 August 2023 10:07 (two years ago)

I'm going to go through every top-50 poll and pull one album that I haven't heard but which sounds interesting or is getting a lot of enthusiasm in the posts into a (Tidal) playlist. That'll keep me busy for a while, then maybe I'll start over.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:56 (two years ago)

I'm sure it doesn't really top 'Fear of Music' and half a dozen others here, for me, but had to go with Idjah Hadidjah because that album was a mind-blower to young me.

Soundslike, Saturday, 26 August 2023 00:06 (two years ago)

Voted Absinthe because it's the one where it sounds like Joey Baron is dragging and scraping a metal chain instead of playing kit (nevermind all the other zany inspired ish going on on it)

If I luge, if I luge, if I luge you on the track (Craig D.), Saturday, 26 August 2023 22:43 (two years ago)

(Ah, Idjah Hadidjah also rules--Tongerret 4 lyfe)

If I luge, if I luge, if I luge you on the track (Craig D.), Saturday, 26 August 2023 22:45 (two years ago)

In a more just universe, jaipongan would be the big dance craze sweeping every nation and causing world peace through big time sensuality. Just from my surface level reading (eg wikipedia) the style has an amazing story, with one guy developing it because Sukarno banned decadent Western music in 1961, and it becoming too popular to ban when the Indonesian govt realized it included sexytimes themes and was popular with the lower classes.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Saturday, 26 August 2023 23:17 (two years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 27 August 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

I pulled out my old CD of the Material album the other day because of this. So great.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Sunday, 27 August 2023 12:51 (one year ago)

Today would have been Sonny Sharrock's 83rd birthday and Jeff G is playing Material's "Square Dance" on his show right now. (WFMU)

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Sunday, 27 August 2023 14:41 (one year ago)

that is def the best Material album

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 27 August 2023 15:09 (one year ago)

System, Monday, 28 August 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

90 votes, nice!

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Monday, 28 August 2023 00:20 (one year ago)

tbf, any soundtrack poll conducted by anyone would almost-definitely have Under The Skin OST winning it in a landslide

Snoopy is a cat, who lives in a cage (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 28 August 2023 00:26 (one year ago)

I was the only Material voter.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 11:53 (one year ago)

I'm mulling a songs poll, stuff that makes me absolutely melt down and/or stop what I'm doing to sing along in my horrible croak, but which can't quite lift an album to top 50 status.
