the album on the table is the table

In an effort to not be such a hater, I am joining in. (Sincerely— I am trying to not be such a hater).

I went through the years of my life since I began listening to music and picked my favorite albums listened to during those years, more or less. Some years the album remained the same as the previous year, some years were skipped, etc.

Found the exercise much more provocative than I expected...I got into music through alternative stuff in the early 90s, then quickly got into punk then hardcore then grindcore and etc, pulled out of that once I heard Sonic Youth and became pretty "mainstream indie" in my tastes until I got to university, where I went haywire, did a lot of acid, and got into freaky stuff and noise shit, aleatoric music, and techno. Very few newer albums on here, mostly retrospective.

My dad played a lot of Chic and Anita Baker in the car when I was kid. I left off the Dan because I couldn't pick one, and of course there are gazillions of artists who have singles that I love but who never made great "albums."

About half of these are on here because they make me weep or were exceptionally important to me at pivotal moments in what one could call my "emotional development," if you could call me developed at all. No order.

Ooooo good picks, interesting choices. I love Thief so much! I can’t not vote for Hole tho

ooh gonna have to think about this

I can't believe I haven't heard that Lau Nau album!

Thief was the first of his that I heard, a boy I was in love with gave me a burnt CD of it my junior year in high school

this is more or less the logic that I used when making my list

Nice to see, and I'll have to investigate a couple of these (Lau Nau?), but it's Low for me.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:48 (two years ago)

i like this list a lot!

Lau Nau was/is part of the whole Finnish woodland psych thing— Kuutarha is lots of bells, looped vocals, blown out string sounds, and an eerie sadness. Beautiful record, def in my top 10 of the 2010s if i’m being honest.

I never see Orchestra of Bubbles, Kuutarha, Moon Pix or Alcachofa on such lists and they’re great albums. So hard to pick between those.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:56 (two years ago)

I don't know why but it sort of feels like cheating or ballot box stuffing to vote for something I had on my own list, so I'll vote Goo over Sound-Dust.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:58 (two years ago)

love this list, some amazing albums here. Props for adding “rejoicing in the hands”; there was no posturing in the albums added to my list, but there probably was some in albums I omitted…. Devendra’s music being something I associate with a very immature period of my life (intellectually/morally/aesthetically). But damn did I love it in that time.

Mass romantic - thief - moon pix - here comes the Indian - god’s money: massive run of some indie greats

Ravedeath, the curtain hits the cast, aether, STOTL, songs ohia, rust never, bee thousand, goo…. Hard to pick a single one to vote for but I’m feeling moon pix today so moon pix it is

H.P, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 02:00 (two years ago)

Just tell me your fave between those 4 and I’ll vote that way. I’d probably rank them all in the same level.

Listened to OoB for the first time in a few years the other day and it remains so excellent, it was one of my most-listened to albums of latter portion of the aughts

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 02:01 (two years ago)

I've voted for some of these in other polls, so to spread it around I voted Rust Never Sleeps here. Great list. I love that Bill Evans album.

Yeah it was definitely also an album that was on heavy rotation for me back then.

Goo as I don't think it has shown up before

Tim Hecker- Ravedeath, 1972

would've figured you more the "early hecker" type

this is a great list - i went for the elliott smith s/t but it's cool to see the songs:ohia s/t on here too. such a great album and so different to their later stuff!

Threw a vote for Shahen-Shah. A king of kings, indeed, as large as music gets.

We Shall All Be Healed or Shahen-Shah.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 09:45 (two years ago)

Glad to see Nusrat getting some love. I could have picked a few of his but Shahen-Shah was stuck in my car tape player for a week once about a decade ago, and while this was unintentional, it became and remains my favorite of the records. Just mindblowing.

We had horrible dialup internet at home for all of my teenage years— I will be 39 in October fwiw— so I often had to just pick a record based on a recommendation. Someone recommended Songs:Ohia, I got this one at the local record shop, and while I don’t think it’s my favorite record of his, it’s the one that has the clearest emotional resonance for me— “Big Sewell Mt.” is scalded into my brain, and I think is probably the reason why I loved Low so much the first time I heard them a few months later.

Surprising myself and going with Goo for the tour alone. Nirvana opened

Bee OK, Friday, 25 August 2023 02:53 (two years ago)

Weirdly, some eleven years later, I saw Sonic Youth open for Pearl Jam.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 25 August 2023 02:54 (two years ago)

i bought Goo at a flea market in Providence in 1997– immediately put it in my Discman and was forever changed.

Saw SY a number of times, and they were always quite good, but the show that I really remember wasn’t memorable due to SY’s set— it was when Stereolab opened for them in 2000 and just absolutely destroyed the crowd, one of the best live sets I have ever seen.

careful! lol. WSABH contains one of my favorite songs (“Against Pollution”), same with RNS (“Thrasher”). Both turn me into a weepy puddle

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:02 (two years ago)

"Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan- Shahen Shah"

Listening to this now - excellent

xyzzzz__, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:07 (two years ago)

xp: yeah, I get that not all the records are in the vein of tMG or Neil Young, but those are the two albums of each of those artists that I would have picked. They bode well for your other picks. Thrasher was my first favorite Neil Young song, and it resonates even more strongly for me now.

peace, man, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:30 (two years ago)

Against Pollution is my #1 tMG song without a doubt

"Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan- Shahen Shah"

there are so many records, but this one is the one, imo— my favorite example of his superior vocal abilities.

Against Pollution is my #1 tMG song without a doubt

yeah. a few of his other songs (including his most famous track) also reduce me to tears but this is the one i think about the most— the complexity of acknowledging one’s place in a death culture yet yearning for grace and absolution at the same time, whew

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:07 (two years ago)

I just think it’s a triumph of production, the restrained rhythm section creating all this empty, tense space, the intimacy of the vocal delivery. I’ve always contended that the “empty verse/chorus” at the end of so many tMG songs, where the chords just loop without any further vocals, it’s a “ghost guitar solo”, a moment where the listener lets their own imagination fill in the final cycle

Snoopy is a cat, who lives in a cage (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:18 (two years ago)

agreed!

Great list- has a lot of artists that I wanted to include but I didn’t really have a “definitive” album of theirs that I’d settled on.

Went with Pod

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 25 August 2023 16:10 (two years ago)

like other albums on this list, the tape cassette of Pod got stuck in an old car’s deck for a while and it became imprinted on my brain. i love the Breeders but i LOVE that record, tho recently have been listening more to the demos

Automatic is the one that would also make my list (not that I would make a list, but supposing i did). Orchestra of Bubbles is the one that made me happiest to see here. Voted Curtain because it's the most table, or at least the one i most associate with table.

Deflatormouse, Thursday, 31 August 2023 01:45 (two years ago)

this is maybe the best of all of the lists I've seen. almost all of these are among my all-time favorite albums, so it's hard to choose!

Number of albums heard: 13

Favourite: Victorialand

Nicest surprise: Ayler, Mass Romantic

Unheard, but most want to hear: Low, and Thief, one of only two Destroyer records I haven't heard
