Ned's one record

I mean of course it's Loveless, my lifemarker, my key moment in time, my past/present divider. I haven't listened to it straight through in years. Anyway, then there's everything else I like, of which there is quite a lot, and I don't think in terms of lists any more.

Wait. This isn't Sparks.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 05:12 (one year ago)

I voted contrarian with "again?".

After mbv I feel there was a collective exhale because they finally released something new. This meant we could all stop obsessing over Loveless and speculating over how the follow-up would sound. Now, after mbv and the world tours, have we all gotten Loveless out of our system to some extent?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 10:22 (one year ago)

Voted Isn't Anything was better.

I also like Isn't Anything more but don't want to be rude to you, to be frank you've put me in a bit of a quandary here

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:34 (one year ago)

Isn’t Anything isn’t anywhere near as good as Loveless. Loveless has guitar oceans! Isn’t Anything has shitty muddy production!

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:41 (one year ago)

I really need to hear the mbv album one of these days.

"yellow loveless" from 2013 is nice!

It is!

BOGUS

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 00:03 (one year ago)

Isn't Anything is really good but not as great as Loveless. the distortion and sound manipulation is there, but not the amazing songs

Dan S, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 00:27 (one year ago)

A hard fought battle in any event.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 00:30 (one year ago)

it's a bit of a hit on rym — hope they're sending you royalty checks. I'm a little hazy on which of those albums I discovered via your list and which I discovered via the ilx hivemind, but it's safe to say it introduced me to a number of albums I still count as some of my favorites and helped spark my UK post-rock phase sometime in the late '00s. nb: zoomer music nerds will hail you as a prophet if you can get away with retroactively inserting Stratosphere or Long Season into your list

urquelle surprise (unregistered), Saturday, 9 September 2023 22:59 (one year ago)

Ned's list introduced me to Disco Inferno, who are not only one of my favourite bands but were a crucial band in building my online social life.

Ages ago I slightly tried to make RYM aware of Tom's equivalent singles list but because I never turned it into a list on the site (I mean the original is right there) it hasn't taken off.

probably futile to even start a conversation about adding another face to their Christgau/Scaruffi/Fantano/ToddintheShadows Rushmore

urquelle surprise (unregistered), Saturday, 9 September 2023 23:19 (one year ago)

What a dire Rushmore that is (except Christgau)

First time seeing that 90’s list by Ned and it’s pretty good. Does he have lists for other decaded or singles?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 10 September 2023 01:40 (one year ago)

My first time seeing it too. I had no idea Ned was such a big Melon Collie fan.

I really need to give Depeche Mode a decent chance some day.

Cow_Art, Sunday, 10 September 2023 02:20 (one year ago)

You do indeed!
