This was just ridiculous, I started out thinking about doing mainly modern albums but started at the 80s because of the recent KROQ polls. I'm so much more into pop these days that I think the 2000s list would have been fun. Decided to cut out the 60s just to make it easier. I hit 70, with some very difficult cuts, and was only up to the end of the 90s. So I ended up cutting some classics like Loveless, Blood on the Tracks, Nick Drake, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, ect. When I could not cut anymore and was stuck at 52 and I almost just closed the browser but closed my eyes and cut two more, sorry Led Zeppelin and Curtis Mayfield. Had to include Black Sabbath as I only have one metal album but that almost got cut anyways too.

I did this on another music message board around 2003 that actuall Whiney G. Weingarten organized. Using his full name as he does on this board too. Way too scared to look at said list.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 03:57 (one year ago)

A lot of these I had to delete from my list. Voted Spiritualized

The old CMJ board, back when Whiney edited CMJ New Music magazine.

I'm sure I've still got my list. I daresay a newly-compiled list would probably be much the same.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 04:42 (one year ago)

lol i think we should be friends our venn diagram is basically a circle

orifex, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 04:47 (one year ago)

There are a few of us that migrated over from CMJ. The board housed those lists so they are there. ILM has altered my taste, so the reason why I won't go looking around.

My heart goes to Parallel Lines.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 04:52 (one year ago)

Great list. Haven’t seen Mezzanine on any of the lists so voted for that just over The Cars s/t

that's not my post, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 04:59 (one year ago)

My heart goes to Parallel Lines.
Was already thinking that, despite various temptations to stray---so yeah, "Fade away, and radiate." "All I want, is a picture of yew."

dow, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 07:30 (one year ago)

Torn between Technique and Parallel Lines.

Alba, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 07:32 (one year ago)

saw that you chose Good Morning Spider from my list, so I'm gonna reciprocate. not just my favourite on this list but probably my favourite album of all time!

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 08:12 (one year ago)

Swervedriver.
absolutely all time for me.

CRCR

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 08:52 (one year ago)

Couldn't not vote for C'mon Kids but I do have a lot of love for that Charlatans album

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 08:57 (one year ago)

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls

Underrated Stones album which has become one of my faves of theirs

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 09:01 (one year ago)

As you know my favorite Boo Radleys album is Kingsize but that album is not a 10 because of Free Huey, which is not really a good song. It reminds me of Beach House by Carly Rae Jepsen, where the song is ok but out of place on the album itself. Giant Steps is classic but I think I love the loudness of C'mon Kids a bit more these days so I put it here. I also think Learning to Walk is a flat out classic as well one of the best shoegaze comps there is.

I like all of these albums. will vote for Daydream Nation

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:40 (one year ago)

i thought about voting ok computer just as a troll vote

but i didn't

Nowhere is sparkly nostalgia and beauty front to back

kraudive, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 19:46 (one year ago)

I intentionally didn't look at other people's lists before making mine and that ... well genius makes no MISTAKES, really, but ...

voted Spiritualized

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 19:56 (one year ago)

That is what I heard. Should be fun.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:00 (one year ago)

Ramain in Light for the win

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:00 (one year ago)

And why I picked a different Talking Heads album

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:03 (one year ago)

can't really choose between
hatful of hollow
nowhere
elastica
stone roses
pornography

I guess there are other cure albums I like more than p'graphy so it feels like I shouldn't vote for it whereas the other 4 are by far my favourites of those artists.

bah I'll go with ride . I'm a sucker for fly/sky/high rhymes.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:07 (one year ago)

Nowhere means so much to me, just that time and place. I think I saw Ride 10 times on that tour.

Glad, someone else likes the Stone Roses album as I thought ILM hates them
.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:24 (one year ago)

Thing about Nowhere is that it still sounds excellent. Every song. It's almost a lost classic to kids these days.

kraudive, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:33 (one year ago)

Great list, could have voted for around 20 of these. Voting The Hurting.

the future is now, Friday, 25 August 2023 02:57 (one year ago)

Treasure

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Friday, 25 August 2023 02:59 (one year ago)

I could have also listed Heaven and Las Vegas but Treasure just means so much to me.

Bee OK, Friday, 25 August 2023 03:39 (one year ago)

This was the second part, phone died.

I went about this a little different meaning, not every album is my favorite from said artist but one that I like almost as much.

Bee OK, Friday, 25 August 2023 05:11 (one year ago)

Since I can vote in my own poll, voting Pornography as it's the darkest one.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 September 2023 03:18 (one year ago)

The trance like drumming, the wailing guitar, the bass you can feel in your toes and the voice of despair. Nothing else quite like it, not even from The Cure.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 September 2023 03:34 (one year ago)

Pretty much an impossible choice, I love so many of these albums, I picked New Order but at least ten others are serious candidates.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 2 September 2023 15:48 (one year ago)

Parallel Lines over Cars s/t

Lee626, Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:43 (one year ago)

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

I can see why it is divisive, it is such a weird, primitive, over-sharing, fauvist album with archaic instrumentation. It relates to other Elephant 6 music but is nothing like the rest of the 90s

Dan S, Saturday, 2 September 2023 23:57 (one year ago)

But it is also super heart-felt and loud to the point of distortion. It gets my vote

Radiator was my favorite contemporary album at one of the pivotal moments in my life. I needed it, it saved me, and it also messed me up worse than any other album has ever messed me up. Under its spell my main focus in life for a time became channeling my anger into antics and my antics into art. Cluttered Rhodes and 303 driven arrangements = hardtop cityscape of indeterminate nationality, cheap upholstery in the midwinter chill with only WGBH ident-colored nostalgia for warmth. The embarrassing dorm room Che Guevara poster lyrics were always embarrassing, but for giving me permission to say "fuck it" and continue saying it till the bottom fell out, it's by far my favorite album here still.

Deflatormouse, Sunday, 3 September 2023 03:32 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 4 September 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

I voted Stone Roses here because it was one I sort of kicked myself leaving off my own list. Besides loving it on its merits, that album is tied to a lot of specific things for me. Essential soundtrack to a chunk of my life.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 4 September 2023 01:18 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 40, all but one of which (see below) has at least 1 song I love

Favourite: Teenage Fanclub, 9/10, over Cocteau Twins, also 9/10

Least-favourite: Neutral Milk Hotel, 3/10 ("super heart-felt and loud to the point of distortion")

Nicest surprise: Donna Summer or Elastica, both 8/10

Unheard, but most want to hear: Ride

I could have also listed Heaven and Las Vegas

I'd have voted for this over Bandwagonesque.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 4 September 2023 01:23 (one year ago)

I moved back to Orange County from San Francisco and used to listen to Neutral Milk Hotel along with Lifted to reach that feeling. I was going from city life back to suburban life. I didn't want to adjust I just wanted to wallow in the Monk. NMH can achieve something few can but also understand people hating it.

Bee OK, Monday, 4 September 2023 03:04 (one year ago)

It'll End In Tears as this might be the only vote it gets.

octobeard, Monday, 4 September 2023 03:50 (one year ago)

I see I made a mistake, Xtrmntr was released January 2000, so it should not be here. I forgot the Pale Saints, so that should take its place. My fault I didn't catch it earlier.

Bee OK, Monday, 4 September 2023 23:33 (one year ago)

Great selections, but I think our tastes overlap a lot on this board so maybe not surprising. You've even got my GOAT album on there so I'll go with that

Vinnie, Monday, 4 September 2023 23:50 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
