The La's "Way Out," because it's my phone alarm.

Talking Simpsons podcast, because my Bluetooth headphones I keep at the office weren't charged and I had to use my USB headset, which sucks to play music through.

Mapache's new album, because I had it on my radar and it has cover art that is very recognizable even at thumbnail scale, so when I opened the Bandcamp mobile app and saw it on the "Discover" splash page I went "Ooh, is that out now??"

XTC - Mummer. Because I feel that morally it's only right to listen to XTC in the Spring and Summertime, and I haven't listened to them much this year as the weather's been terrible

Puzzle Pieces by Tiger Trap. I'm doing a second round of a playlist exchange with a friend (we send each other ten songs) and I think he'll like it, based on what was in his last playlist (lots of short guitar-indie-pop tunes)

It Should Have Happened a Long Time Ago by the Paul Motian Trio to help me keep cool while staining the deck

Black Earth by Bohren & Der Club of Gore because I saw it on someone's album poll and it seemed to fit what I was reading

Brad C., Wednesday, 23 August 2023 13:37 (one year ago)

I was listening to Vietnam by the Revolutionary Ensemble earlier on because a friend asked me about late period Jazz Composer's Orchestra albums, including one with Leroy Jenkins. A search on Apple Music didn't turn anything up, but did lead me to Vietnam.

Now I'm listening to Snowflakes are Dancing by Tomita because I saw a photo of him and his absurd 'rig' on Facebook earlier on, and because on an old ILX thread, mark s said this one was a good'un.

Closeup in Swing - Erroll Garner. Because I've just had a long walk and require some lyrical beauty being pounded out of a piano.

Kevin Hays & Bill Stewart, 'American Ballad' - after listening to Pablo Held's podcast interviews with both them, and adjacent collaborators like Scott Colley.

Howie Lee, 'Walking on Thin Ice' - Bandcamp helpfully emailed me to let me know about this new release.

On the list for today from people's 50 album polls:
Miles Davis, 'Double Image'
Lau Nau, 'Kuutarha'
Biota, 'Invisible Map'
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, 'Strangers from the Universe'

now on Mix 55: DJ Sprinkles' Controllable Desire 2006-2018 because it's Sprinkles, duh

THe classical hits collection thing I got yesterday, because I got it yesterday and also it's a classical hits 101 or something. Good introduction to the genre possibly and I know the area less than I maybe shouldm Didn't really grow up on it but am beginning to enjoy so gradually introducing myself to bits and pieces.

The Donny Hathaway live compilation I picked up in tyhe same purchase because I also know him less thani maybe ought, do have his Original Albums set which I listened to a bit whe I got it. He has done some interesting stuff.

CTI Allstars California Concert
Cos it has some great stuff on, particularly like the bits where the backing band cook off each other and would love to hear more of that somewhere. Got a good sense of groove, George Benson, Ron Carter Johnny Hammond, Billy Cobham and Airto Moreira plus horns that were signed to the CTI label at the time. Pretty decent and a lot more vital than the studio stuff from the time I think, funkier like.

Tim Buckley cos he had an amazing voice and the 69 live stuff iis pretty out there. Not as much as he got over the next couple of years though.

The bits of30s, 40s and 50s country that I picked up in the form of Proper boxes a month ago because 've always loved that stuff. Polit9ics behind some of it may not be great but do love the pre schmaltz white man's blues bit. SDid enkjoy the Son Of Redneck club in the late 80s wish I'd got there more.

The Irish traditional stuff, the Farewell to Ireland set that was with the bluegrass and country stuff I picked up a month back. Had it in an earlier copy which I enjoyed and thought I'd get another newer copy.& the Martin O'Connor band that I picked up online after seeing them locally.Cos there is some decent traditional Irish music around Farewell To Ireland is he early 20th century stuff some of the earliest recorded. I would say there was jazz in the soundif it wasn't so early so maybe its from where jazz picked things up from to some degree(that and the African roots of course).

The African stuff, trying to find my heritage to some degree and finding it really enticing anyway. Love the grooves, want to pick up a lot more of the Mande music I love even if it is from the other coast of Africa than my dad was. Also the Benga stuff which did tie in with his tribe initially.

Jazz cos I've loved it since my teens and am still discovering new stuff.
Mod, garage, freakbeat, psychedelia, krautrock, folkrock and other developments. Filling in gaps in knowledge of th9ings I've enjoyed since my teens. Soul and reggae and other black music developments for similar reasons.
Punk & postpunk too

Cory Hanson's Western Cum - despite the title - because the live video that mizzell posted in the eponymous thread was really awesome

Black Oak Arkansas, s/t - Alfred blogged about one of their singles which reminded me that they were a weirder, more interesting band than people remember.

Listening to a playlist of Bowie covers. Au Revoir Simone’s version of “Oh! You Pretty Things” came up on a playlist and thought it’d be fun to find some others.

Listening to Julius Hemphill's Flat-Out Jump Suite because I haven't heard it in long enough that I forgot what it sounded like. It's abstract, defiantly un-skronky loft jazz featuring Hemphill on tenor sax and flute, Olu Dara on trumpet, Abdul Wadud on cello and Warren Smith on drums. If you like Wadada Leo Smith's 1970s work you'll like this.

Original Raggamuffin 1975–1977 by Jah Stitch - listening to a few things I hadn't heard before on the Blood & Fire poll.
Osmose by Annexus Quam - new to me 1970 German freak out stuff mentioned on Christoph Heeman's Facebook page.

xp I got that s/t BOA in the late 80s and enjoyed it a lot. Pretty ott heavy stuff with presumably local colour.
Like it a lot at the time only found a best of when i was in Dublin looking for cds but that first one at least is pretty unique.
Sounds like Knowbody Else like, or maybe a bit weirder.

Loads of generic 2010s pop that I was happy to ignore at the time, but must now get to grips with for a 30th birthday party that I’m playing. I’ve been sent a wish list; it’s an alarming challenge.

30-40 hours/week of WFMU because as curators/presenters of music I find interesting, they're 1000000000x better than any streaming pile of algorithm. Even if some of their mic breaks are intolerably long and/or stupid.
