scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:43 (two years ago)

Space Needle just barely over Calypso

Space Needle - The Moray Eels Eats The Space Needle

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:44 (two years ago)

Voted Th' Faith Healers because "Moona-Ina-Joona" rules, but apparently that's only on the US version of the album.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:45 (two years ago)

Mr Wollogallu is great.

Also fond memories of that Air France EP but it’s been probably a decade since I last heard it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:47 (two years ago)

It holds up!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:47 (two years ago)

You should really revisit it; that's way too long a gap

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:54 (two years ago)

I remember “no way down” is the best rated one but “beach party” was one of my favorite songs that year. Wish they had made more songs like that one!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:56 (two years ago)

Will listen to them again later in the day!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:56 (two years ago)

I hear you - that track is so much fun!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:57 (two years ago)

Wilderness!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:21 (two years ago)

Glenn Jones - My Garden State, perfect record

Much respect to hometown heroes milf, but I must have spun International Airport about a thousand times so cant vote for anything else

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:36 (two years ago)

My copy has Sheggi's signature (RIP)

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:37 (two years ago)

I have got that 7" but not signed. Am jealous you have Emma's House though, only have that on CD

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:40 (two years ago)

Probably my most prized 7"!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:08 (two years ago)

How often do I get to vote for Wilderness?!? So: Wilderness.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:13 (two years ago)

Seefeel, but I do love that Tall Dwarfs record too

NickB, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:21 (two years ago)

Regarding the "object" side of it, I love the little book & Chris's artwork throughout!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:42 (two years ago)

The Clientele - both of those songs are perfect

Faith healers all the way

H.P, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:48 (two years ago)

Can't in good conscience vote against Homegas.

ian, Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:01 (two years ago)

I recently got a pristine copy finally, after many years casually looking for one, so I'm thrilled! It sounds so good, especially since the mp3s I've had were ripped from a copy that is easily in much worse shape.

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:33 (two years ago)

The Clientele get my vote. I need to hear more of these.

kitchen person, Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:46 (two years ago)

I considered hyperlinks to songs for each but realized I didn't have that kind of time...

Based on your vote I'd recommend checking out Hydroplane next perhaps

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:02 (two years ago)

Space Needle - The Moray Eels Eats The Space Needle

― scott seward, Wednesday, August 23, 2023 10:44 AM (ten hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

Forgot to mention, your enthusiasm in this thread is still fresh in my mind from years ago, though I think the first album of theirs I heard was Voyager which I also love. I'm wondering if I should have picked that one instead maybe... oh well I love'm both

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:30 (two years ago)

shameless bump

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:17 (two years ago)

I was hoping you'd make a list Evan, you can probably guess my pick!

MaresNest, Friday, 25 August 2023 09:33 (two years ago)

space needle album rules and lido has SPIN 'ALF...SPIN 'ALF on it which is one of the best songs of the 90s...but swirlies, obv

imago, Friday, 25 August 2023 10:30 (two years ago)

Yes swirlies obv! I often say that album is the best of the 90s, usually as hyperbole for the sake of marketing to friends and strangers, but there are many times I believe it in my heart

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:47 (two years ago)

Mares yes indeed! I even mentioned you upthread already with that pick in mind

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:49 (two years ago)

what would you recommend i start with? already familiar with the cherubs, faith healers and gbv albums

tremolo, Friday, 25 August 2023 12:52 (two years ago)

Oh boy, how about Swirlies and Difference Engine!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:55 (two years ago)

XXP - I just spotted that :)

Swirlies' record is absolutely incredible too, v close second.

MaresNest, Friday, 25 August 2023 12:56 (two years ago)

Btw Ropers fans really ought to check out the Bomb Pops, also on the list.

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:59 (two years ago)

starting on the swirlies album, first track v strong, will report back later <3

tremolo, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:01 (two years ago)

shit, this album is really good. sounds of sebring is currently rocking my world.

evan, if this kind of equal-parts-fucked-up-and-beautiful noise pop is your thing, may i direct you to my post on the bandcamp thread earlier about almost-unknown solo noise pop artist bulldog eyes? i think the album "you have fun" is a good place to start, but honestly almost everything she made pre-2019 is phenomenal and it's a crying shame she isn't better-known

tremolo, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:13 (two years ago)

This is another where a gave up counting the overlap. What a great list! Difficult to not reactionary vote for Space Needle too but went with Seefeel - much like Broadcast, the further away we’ve gotten from when these were new underlines just how ahead of its time they are. Even if that is a lazy phrase to describe albums like these.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:19 (two years ago)

tremolo, yes thanks for the tip, I did see your post in that thread but hadn't clicked through any links yet. Will indeed follow your recommendation!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:50 (two years ago)

Elvis, awesome - assuming that means you're also a Bowery Electric fan?

Love how popular Space Needle is around here and nowhere else

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:53 (two years ago)

...though it's been fun to see the otherwise LACK of consensus here!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:27 (two years ago)

I think 20 years ago me would have chosen one of: Swirlies, Black Tambourine, The Ropers, The Cat's Miaow (though strictly speaking that's a quite recent comp) plus maybe the Moles and Cannanes LPs. Today me may require some re-listening and a long contemplative walk to solve this riddle lol.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 25 August 2023 14:29 (two years ago)

To that point! Have you heard that Hydroplane s/t at any point in those last 20 years? Recently reissued as well

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:37 (two years ago)

I have a knack for repeatedly failing to listen to more than an occasional Hydroplane track. A ludicrous state of affairs for a Cat's Miaow enthusiast, I know! I see it is indeed very available so no more excuses...

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 25 August 2023 14:51 (two years ago)

Ha, well if you can maintain focus, that album is especially beautiful and rewarding

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:54 (two years ago)

Cheers! Quick sample is promising.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 25 August 2023 15:19 (two years ago)

I love Bowery Electric - I first heard them via that first 2x7" and then the first self-titled album on Kranky. I got to see them around then - Lawrence had one of the most immense guitar sounds going (I think some of that first album was recorded in an aircraft hangar?)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 August 2023 15:45 (two years ago)

Would love to be able to catch them live... I got to see Seefeel a couple of years ago for instance.

Heads up both the self-titled and the tracks from that Drop EP (2x7") are being reissued as a 2xLP and it's coming out in one week!

I had also never heard the Swirlies album (only I've heard of it), and enjoying it now...

huge fan of the Toms record

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 13:21 (two years ago)

went for black tambourine, because i love black tambourine and out of nowhere remembered black car is one of the best songs ever written the other day

devvvine, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 13:25 (two years ago)

I'm glad you remembered that, it's definitely true.

And yeah that Toms record is incredible power pop, so cool that he played every instrument himself. Guy was bursting with tunes!

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 15:10 (two years ago)

I know it's not on the album featured on your list but I'm loving this track lately
