I know polls are not everyone's cuppa tea, but hopefully some good conversations over the albums chosen will be sparked.

ILM has way more active threads than ILE at the moment. Posting about music is much less stressful than about politics. Certainly much more fun.

I agree, all these lists have been really fun to look at and given me some ideas for new stuff to listen to, which is what this board is all about.

i've been here about a week and it's really nice to see that such an old and venerable corner of the internet is still alive + kickin. i stumbled on it like a year ago, forgot what it was called, then rediscovered it while reading retromania which was written like 13 years ago!

I'm enjoying the activity too and have a list of albums to listen to that keeps growing, which can only be a good thing.

I did listen to Mercyful Fate's "Dont Break The Oath" for the first time last night after seeing it on Neandarthal's list.....which was nice

i think everyone saw i was posting again and said "quick! look busy!" as well you should. things getting a LITTLE too sleepy around here. i don't really do polls but i did vote in two of these polls. for kyuss and space needle. for years i hid polls and never knew what anyone was talking about when they brought stuff up from poll threads. i was a happy idiot.

i am enjoying this sudden bloom of nice low-stakes threads where ppl can politely shoot the breeze about music they are enthusiastic about, cant even begin to comprehend why ppl wouldnt like it, we should make this a regular seasonal thing

Honestly I think ILM is underrated (including by the folks who post here)… there’s no place else that I’ve found decent conversation about music, and I’ve tried, believe me I’ve tried.

(The same goes for movies/TV and other stuff on ILE. I don’t know where others go for such fare, but it’s never worked for me.)

I know there’s been several previous ones too (frogbs, bradnelson, peace man… come to mind… I guess I somehow made mine too but I went by decade not all time)… so maybe if I have some time I’ll try to organize the current ones and see which previous ones I can find to post links into a single thread for reference and easy accesibility I guess….

I mean idk if I’m the only one interested in consulting and researching albums from all these lists in the future lol… right now is way too much to even start focusing on what’s catching my interest.

I’ve already listened to four new-to-me albums in the past three days :)

These polls have been a true delight. I haven’t contributed to any of the convos, but have been thrilled to see so many records I love, and even more thrilled to add to my list of new discoveries that I’m stoked to explore.

No… I think he was somewhat disappointed about some complaints of how he had to delay the rollout several times but iirc he kind of got in a disagreement over a movie on ILE - not 100% sure as I very rarely visit that part of the forum - and added to the fact that he had been extremely busy at time he just left… no idea if he’ll ever come back or if this is just a hiatus.

Sometimes it takes just one last straw for these things to happen. It's unlikely to be just one thing. But yeah, that's a big shame

That's why I'm hoping someone compiles a playlist, I've already lost track of (and been overwhelmed by) all the stuff I want to listen to *right now*, the result being a sort of choice paralysis that sent me, inexplicably, to Robert Plant's "Manic Nirvana" this morning.

I can't imagine getting passionate over Top Gun, but that's just me. I can, OTOH, imagine getting really annoyed over someone trying to pick a fight with me about Top Gun.

fwiw the system used to allow you to vote as many times you wanted as long as your votes were paced a certain interval (one week? two weeks?) apart. but at least one poster abused the system by voting 10+ times in polls with distant closing dates, so the mods may have tightened up the polling regulations since I regularly pulled that shit

not sure about the terminology, but doesn't ilx already truncate very long threads? when i click the giant pitchfork thread, i see the first 50 posts, then "Skipping 21291 messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all.", then the most recent 50 posts.

seems weird to say that there isn't much reason to start new threads when so many ilm threads are about particular artists or albums. if someone is excited about a new artist or album or song, i'd much rather see a new thread about it than have it buried on some rolling genre thread, in part bc the new thread will actually get my attention when i'm scrolling sna.

There have also been a few threads started on “general” topics in the past few days (one just a few minutes ago)! Seems like novel topics are still out there… or older threads exploring them, if they exist, aren’t worth trying to dig up.

i was _this_ close to starting a "bands that..." thread last night. very glad that i didn't though (it was "bands/artists you've heard every single second of recorded music by")

at first i thought it would be a way of showing bands that some people are REALLY into, and maybe there'd be some surprising answers. but then i remembered that among music listeners, especially passionate ones, there are a ton of people who really have listened to every single second of recorded music by hundreds of different bands, and people who make a point of tracking down every last rare thing just to know that they've done it. so, maybe less of a passion thing than a collector/obsessive mentality

as i idled on the Post New Question page, i imagined intrigued answers, angry answers, flippant answers, funny ones, antagonistic, and no answers at all. i considered the grateful dead answer, wondering if live recordings should count with a band like the dead, and then someone who claimed to have listened to all of the grateful dead live recordings, all of them, and that made me want to post it. then, i sneezed violently and spilled coffee all over the place, and my goldfish had died. terrifying

jaymc OTM. I like many of the "rolling" genres, but rarely am I tempted to click on those threads because I usually don't feel I'm into them ENOUGH to really join in with them. And often it's just people sharing a YouTube and then moving on. I miss the days when albums or even individual tracks would have someone stanning for them enough that it merited a thread

This is a good point. Individual artist or track threads are good. Now that I am thinking about this, I remember trying to deviate from the rolling ILB thread and starting a thread for an individual book but it really wasn't worth it *sigh*

Right, it does. But if you're interested in reading/searching anything from more than 30 days ago, then that thread becomes basically un-usable.

ah, that's true (about searching for something in a huge thread) -- although, i never use it, but you can turn off images in ilx preferences, which would make the loading time substantially faster.

You can just expand the thread if you’re on the Web (admittedly it’s much clunkier in Zing).

I usually stick to the rolling threads (don’t create ones for new artists and certainly not tracks), although maybe there’d be more discussion if I did. I wonder who’s the most prominent artist who doesn’t have their own thread.

You can even make a single artist thread and post by yourself until maybe somebody else eventually shows up.

And also cut and paste posts embedded in other, more rolling threads.

I usually go for the one most relevant to whatever I want to post, or the one with the coolest title.

yeah I mean I try not to revive threads with toxic old style ilx shit at the top or nasty thread titles.

I think 20 years ppl treated threads like we treat tweets now, and perhaps also like blog posts back then, where people want to 'own' the means of discussion for a while. Also perhaps searching was not so efficient and reliable back then. This flipped at some point with rolling threads absorbing a lot of the energy.

Just ocurred to me it might be funny/useful if you could go to a page of active users, click on any ilxor and get all their recent posts across ilx and this were to become a more popular gateway than New Answers.

Yeah, there used to be new posts for every random news article (in the pre–social media day).
