It's nice to see ILM so busy

...for a change. Busiest I've seen it in a decade.

I know polls are not everyone's cuppa tea, but hopefully some good conversations over the albums chosen will be sparked.

Good work ILM!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:04 (one year ago)

Busy clippers

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:06 (one year ago)

ILM has way more active threads than ILE at the moment. Posting about music is much less stressful than about politics. Certainly much more fun.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:07 (one year ago)

Yeah, it's good!
I'm not voting on the polls but it's great for discovering new albums, and also getting a sense of what various folks look for in music...

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:09 (one year ago)

I really like seeing what everyone lists.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:09 (one year ago)

less stressful? we're basically all on the same page politically but my aesthetic daggers are drawn let me tell you

lol imago.

I agree, all these lists have been really fun to look at and given me some ideas for new stuff to listen to, which is what this board is all about.

Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable POST (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:24 (one year ago)

i've been here about a week and it's really nice to see that such an old and venerable corner of the internet is still alive + kickin. i stumbled on it like a year ago, forgot what it was called, then rediscovered it while reading retromania which was written like 13 years ago!

only wish i'd discovered it sooner. been a long time since i've actually enjoyed talking to strangers on the internet

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:27 (one year ago)

I'm enjoying the activity too and have a list of albums to listen to that keeps growing, which can only be a good thing.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:36 (one year ago)

I did listen to Mercyful Fate's "Dont Break The Oath" for the first time last night after seeing it on Neandarthal's list.....which was nice

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:03 (one year ago)

i think everyone saw i was posting again and said "quick! look busy!" as well you should. things getting a LITTLE too sleepy around here. i don't really do polls but i did vote in two of these polls. for kyuss and space needle. for years i hid polls and never knew what anyone was talking about when they brought stuff up from poll threads. i was a happy idiot.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:10 (one year ago)

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:17 (one year ago)

if you like jazz or funk then you can vote in mine if you want. Hopefully not too sleepy for you

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:21 (one year ago)

i am enjoying this sudden bloom of nice low-stakes threads where ppl can politely shoot the breeze about music they are enthusiastic about, cant even begin to comprehend why ppl wouldnt like it, we should make this a regular seasonal thing

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:28 (one year ago)

niche genre personal polls next?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:46 (one year ago)

Someone less lazy than me should make a thread compiling all of these polls into one thread. I’m having trouble following them.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:21 (one year ago)

Trouble is they all end on different dates, but I'm going to try and keep an eye and note the winners of each one so we can do a poll of those

Honestly I think ILM is underrated (including by the folks who post here)… there’s no place else that I’ve found decent conversation about music, and I’ve tried, believe me I’ve tried.

Clientless (Scooter's Version) (morrisp), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:48 (one year ago)

(The same goes for movies/TV and other stuff on ILE. I don’t know where others go for such fare, but it’s never worked for me.)

mookieproof, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:02 (one year ago)

I think that's too cynical.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:03 (one year ago)

sleeve, yes was me. Didn't expect it to blow up but glad it did. Love seeing people's lists

Also, welcome tremolo. Like others have said, I don't know where people go to find out and discuss music and pop culture and, well, Everything, but ILX is the best place I know of

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:11 (one year ago)

I would also like to take a minimum of 2.5% of the credit for pushing this along

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:16 (one year ago)

Don't settle for less than 5%.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:18 (one year ago)

Yeah dog latin! I meant a thread titled like…

The thread to archive all the polls of personal top lists

I know there’s been several previous ones too (frogbs, bradnelson, peace man… come to mind… I guess I somehow made mine too but I went by decade not all time)… so maybe if I have some time I’ll try to organize the current ones and see which previous ones I can find to post links into a single thread for reference and easy accesibility I guess….

I mean idk if I’m the only one interested in consulting and researching albums from all these lists in the future lol… right now is way too much to even start focusing on what’s catching my interest.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:27 (one year ago)

These polls have been a true delight. I haven’t contributed to any of the convos, but have been thrilled to see so many records I love, and even more thrilled to add to my list of new discoveries that I’m stoked to explore.

sknybrg, Thursday, 24 August 2023 03:54 (one year ago)

Surprised forks hasn't compiled a spotify playlist of every album on the lists

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:30 (one year ago)

Forks left ilm :(

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:12 (one year ago)

That sucks :(

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:43 (one year ago)

I hope the rude response to the ILM 77 tracks rollout wasn’t a part of forks leaving. That was lame

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:44 (one year ago)

eh he tried a slower rollout and asked if it was better some said yes some said no. can't remember it getting particularly heated.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:55 (one year ago)

aww, I didn't know he quit. He should come back!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:04 (one year ago)

No… I think he was somewhat disappointed about some complaints of how he had to delay the rollout several times but iirc he kind of got in a disagreement over a movie on ILE - not 100% sure as I very rarely visit that part of the forum - and added to the fact that he had been extremely busy at time he just left… no idea if he’ll ever come back or if this is just a hiatus.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:34 (one year ago)

Sometimes it takes just one last straw for these things to happen. It's unlikely to be just one thing. But yeah, that's a big shame

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:42 (one year ago)

Moka is right; it was the new Top Gun, though I assume dog latin is correct about the bigger picture

the idea that this is the busiest ILM has been in ten years is simply factually wrong imo. but if people are enjoying these threads, that's cool. I would probably have done one myself if I wasn't so busy this week. don't miss the dance music historiography discussion on the mix CD thread though, that's more my ilm sweet spot at any rate

rob, Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:48 (one year ago)

It’s natural to disagree over things in here… some people love passionately things, some people hate passionately the same things. The only thing ilm agrees on is that Pink Floyd rules.

But yeah I don’t think it was fighting over Top Gun the only reason… just the last drop.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 14:06 (one year ago)

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 24 August 2023 18:00 (one year ago)

That's why I'm hoping someone compiles a playlist, I've already lost track of (and been overwhelmed by) all the stuff I want to listen to *right now*, the result being a sort of choice paralysis that sent me, inexplicably, to Robert Plant's "Manic Nirvana" this morning.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 August 2023 18:03 (one year ago)

I can't imagine getting passionate over Top Gun, but that's just me. I can, OTOH, imagine getting really annoyed over someone trying to pick a fight with me about Top Gun.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 24 August 2023 18:05 (one year ago)

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 12:15 (one year ago)

Was I the only one to actually rank my top fifty?

One of the few, maybe. I thought about doing that but found it impossible. Any ranking I would assign would be largely arbitrary and subject to change.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 26 August 2023 21:08 (one year ago)

I think I initially ranked mine but then changed it to alphabetical because that's what everyone else seemed to be doing. I assumed it was so people would post about the albums rather than argue about placings?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 21:10 (one year ago)

fwiw the system used to allow you to vote as many times you wanted as long as your votes were paced a certain interval (one week? two weeks?) apart. but at least one poster abused the system by voting 10+ times in polls with distant closing dates, so the mods may have tightened up the polling regulations since I regularly pulled that shit

Not as many new threads on ILM now.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 4 September 2023 11:01 (one year ago)

Most topics already have a thread. It's hard to conceive of a topic whose interests would be better served by making a new thread rather than reviving an existing thread.

The threads that are too big to display in a browser (also known as pitchfork is dumb (#34985859340293849494 in a series.))

enochroot, Monday, 4 September 2023 13:53 (one year ago)

You can roll threads, y'know.

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 September 2023 14:46 (one year ago)

not sure about the terminology, but doesn't ilx already truncate very long threads? when i click the giant pitchfork thread, i see the first 50 posts, then "Skipping 21291 messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all.", then the most recent 50 posts.

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 14:52 (one year ago)

seems weird to say that there isn't much reason to start new threads when so many ilm threads are about particular artists or albums. if someone is excited about a new artist or album or song, i'd much rather see a new thread about it than have it buried on some rolling genre thread, in part bc the new thread will actually get my attention when i'm scrolling sna.

jaymc, Monday, 4 September 2023 14:58 (one year ago)

There have also been a few threads started on “general” topics in the past few days (one just a few minutes ago)! Seems like novel topics are still out there… or older threads exploring them, if they exist, aren’t worth trying to dig up.

Disappointing cantaloupe (morrisp), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:05 (one year ago)

i was _this_ close to starting a "bands that..." thread last night. very glad that i didn't though (it was "bands/artists you've heard every single second of recorded music by")

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:14 (one year ago)

at first i thought it would be a way of showing bands that some people are REALLY into, and maybe there'd be some surprising answers. but then i remembered that among music listeners, especially passionate ones, there are a ton of people who really have listened to every single second of recorded music by hundreds of different bands, and people who make a point of tracking down every last rare thing just to know that they've done it. so, maybe less of a passion thing than a collector/obsessive mentality

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:15 (one year ago)

as i idled on the Post New Question page, i imagined intrigued answers, angry answers, flippant answers, funny ones, antagonistic, and no answers at all. i considered the grateful dead answer, wondering if live recordings should count with a band like the dead, and then someone who claimed to have listened to all of the grateful dead live recordings, all of them, and that made me want to post it. then, i sneezed violently and spilled coffee all over the place, and my goldfish had died. terrifying

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:19 (one year ago)

jaymc OTM. I like many of the "rolling" genres, but rarely am I tempted to click on those threads because I usually don't feel I'm into them ENOUGH to really join in with them. And often it's just people sharing a YouTube and then moving on. I miss the days when albums or even individual tracks would have someone stanning for them enough that it merited a thread

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:22 (one year ago)

This is a good point. Individual artist or track threads are good. Now that I am thinking about this, I remember trying to deviate from the rolling ILB thread and starting a thread for an individual book but it really wasn't worth it *sigh*

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:25 (one year ago)

not sure about the terminology, but doesn't ilx already truncate very long threads? when i click the giant pitchfork thread, i see the first 50 posts, then "Skipping 21291 messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all.", then the most recent 50 posts.

― i really like that!! (z_tbd)

Right, it does. But if you're interested in reading/searching anything from more than 30 days ago, then that thread becomes basically un-usable.

I've never understood the bias against thread proliferation tbh.

enochroot, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:38 (one year ago)

ah, that's true (about searching for something in a huge thread) -- although, i never use it, but you can turn off images in ilx preferences, which would make the loading time substantially faster.

but yeah otm about thread proliferation, the more the better

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:43 (one year ago)

You can just expand the thread if you’re on the Web (admittedly it’s much clunkier in Zing).

I usually stick to the rolling threads (don’t create ones for new artists and certainly not tracks), although maybe there’d be more discussion if I did. I wonder who’s the most prominent artist who doesn’t have their own thread.

Disappointing cantaloupe (morrisp), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:44 (one year ago)

You can even make a single artist thread and post by yourself until maybe somebody else eventually shows up.

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 September 2023 16:00 (one year ago)

And also cut and paste posts embedded in other, more rolling threads.

I think 20 years ppl treated threads like we treat tweets now, and perhaps also like blog posts back then, where people want to 'own' the means of discussion for a while. Also perhaps searching was not so efficient and reliable back then. This flipped at some point with rolling threads absorbing a lot of the energy.

Just ocurred to me it might be funny/useful if you could go to a page of active users, click on any ilxor and get all their recent posts across ilx and this were to become a more popular gateway than New Answers.

Yeah, there used to be new posts for every random news article (in the pre–social media day).
