AKM's top 50 albums that betray his age and demographic

I tried not to duplicate any artists in this but failed in a few instances. I can confidently say I love all of these albums unreservedly; there are easily another 150 that I could substitute for these. There is almost nothing in this list that was even released in this century which makes me old and predictable.

For a very long time I've loved the MUSIC of Red House Painters & early Sun Kil Moon too but having a hard time not feeling awkward revisiting it these days

We must be the same age and demographic, because I own 35 or so of these albums, and several of the less obvious selections (Evol, Discipline, Quadrophenia) would be on my list too.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:07 (one year ago)

yeah me too generally speaking but it's dishonest for me to say that album (and the earlier ones) weren't extremely important to me at the time. Same with the Smiths.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:08 (one year ago)

Excellent list and so Disintegration get the vote.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:48 (one year ago)

great list and finally a chance to vote for Another Green World! I still listen to it all the time.

that's not my post, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:56 (one year ago)

Only one of this albums has “electric relaxation” in them.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:58 (one year ago)

Throwing Muses because it is the best album ever made by literal teenagers

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 17:58 (one year ago)

I really struggled with putting a Smiths album on my list, because, well.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:01 (one year ago)

because how do you choose?!?!

no but yeah

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:02 (one year ago)

my take on that stuff is really: if a person is an absolute monster while they made a piece of art, then of course it makes sense to dismiss the art. if the person was not known to be a monster, or was not yet a monster, and the art resonated with you, there is no reason not to continue to enjoy the art.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:05 (one year ago)

Agree, there is no denying the brilliance of the Smiths. I refused to go to Cruel World I because he was the headliner.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:08 (one year ago)

well the art can stand on its own and resonate regardless of the behavior of the artist outside of it (depending on the content of the art), but it's definitely easy to feel uncomfortable with that knowledge in the back of your mind when you're trying to enjoy it on its own terms

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:09 (one year ago)

Right. The Smiths meant the world to me for a time in my early 20s. It's challenging to separate that from the current state of things.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:12 (one year ago)

I just pretend he's dead

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:13 (one year ago)

i like a lot of these albums

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:13 (one year ago)

i wouldn't want a hard rule for what we tolerate as individuals but Morrissey was a racist cunt when he was in the Smiths even if he was more ambiguous about it then

everything after that is about where yr personal lines are drawn

you're a sick man, Buddy Rich (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:13 (one year ago)

Yeah a lot of artist I used to enjoy (Grimes, MIA, Morrisey, Kanye) the red flags were always there. They were saying dangerously idiotic and trite statements since the beginning of their careers but it’s easier to ignore while they’re still making good music. As soon as that starts sucking too all that’s left is their loudmouths.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:26 (one year ago)

If they had died at the top few people would be digging up how awful they were.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:29 (one year ago)

'queen is dead' will always be glorious to me.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:17 (one year ago)

Loveless, nearly picked evol.

I had Ariel pink on my list and yeah, agree it’s disingenuous to not rep something that hit you hard before things were made clear. The past ain’t the present, and these lists are just as much a time capsule of past loves as they are a record of present taste

H.P, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:35 (one year ago)

Ariel Pink never hid being a shit stain of a human neither

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:37 (one year ago)

ariel pink decidedly sucks as a musician and person so he would not be on my list anyway

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:39 (one year ago)

I mean I’m no Ariel pink historian, so I’ve got no claims on his asshole status circa 1999-2000. Happy to have my agnosticism shook out tho

H.P, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:43 (one year ago)

Oh I haven’t got receipts for you that go that far, most of the internet from that era is a graveyard nowadays. There’s many moments from 2010 onwards and some of the 00s stuff is somewhere in this thread:

https://forums.hipinion.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=143358&start=810

But yeah - idk if it was for shock or whatever but there’s accusations of racism, homophobic and transphobic comments, money laundering schemes with his father, sexual assault… gee idk… too many to count lol

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:38 (one year ago)

Secrets Of The Beehive feels like the right call. So many of my favourites here like Talk Talk, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Nick Drake and Japan. Nice list.

kitchen person, Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:44 (one year ago)

The Doldrums is pre-fame for Ariel Pink so I don’t think there are any receipts that go back that far. From my knowledge, it was post-“before today” where Ariel Pink became the Ariel pink the world now knows him as.

Anyways sorry, no need to clog up akm’s list talking about Pink

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:51 (one year ago)

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless is still the best album of all time as far as I'm concerned

Dan S, Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:26 (one year ago)

This is nuts, akm's list of foundational albums is unsettlingly close to my own.

Another Green World is all time so it gets the vote

sawdust lagoon, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:41 (one year ago)

If I’m being honest I’d be voting for White Album in any list it appears in. But for variety’s sake I might vote Midnight Marauders.

o. nate, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:52 (one year ago)

Wow, maybe 38 albums that I would consider among my faves!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 August 2023 03:05 (one year ago)

Very cool to see 'Sleeps With the Fishes' in one of these...

Soundslike, Saturday, 26 August 2023 00:27 (one year ago)

Scrolling this list makes me dizzy---but will go with In A Silent Way----

System, Sunday, 27 August 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 38

Favourite: very difficult choice...Tin Drum

Least-favourite: Disintegration (though I love "The Same Deep Water as You")

Nicest surprise: Golden Palominos, John Cale or Magazine

Unheard, but most want to hear: Throwing Muses or Flip Your Wig

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 27 August 2023 23:22 (one year ago)

gotta confess I want you to do this w/my poll as well
