AKM's top 50 albums that betray his age and demographic

For a very long time I've loved the MUSIC of Red House Painters & early Sun Kil Moon too but having a hard time not feeling awkward revisiting it these days

We must be the same age and demographic, because I own 35 or so of these albums, and several of the less obvious selections (Evol, Discipline, Quadrophenia) would be on my list too.

yeah me too generally speaking but it's dishonest for me to say that album (and the earlier ones) weren't extremely important to me at the time. Same with the Smiths.

I really struggled with putting a Smiths album on my list, because, well.

my take on that stuff is really: if a person is an absolute monster while they made a piece of art, then of course it makes sense to dismiss the art. if the person was not known to be a monster, or was not yet a monster, and the art resonated with you, there is no reason not to continue to enjoy the art.

Agree, there is no denying the brilliance of the Smiths. I refused to go to Cruel World I because he was the headliner.

well the art can stand on its own and resonate regardless of the behavior of the artist outside of it (depending on the content of the art), but it's definitely easy to feel uncomfortable with that knowledge in the back of your mind when you're trying to enjoy it on its own terms

Right. The Smiths meant the world to me for a time in my early 20s. It's challenging to separate that from the current state of things.

i wouldn't want a hard rule for what we tolerate as individuals but Morrissey was a racist cunt when he was in the Smiths even if he was more ambiguous about it then

Yeah a lot of artist I used to enjoy (Grimes, MIA, Morrisey, Kanye) the red flags were always there. They were saying dangerously idiotic and trite statements since the beginning of their careers but it’s easier to ignore while they’re still making good music. As soon as that starts sucking too all that’s left is their loudmouths.

If they had died at the top few people would be digging up how awful they were.

I had Ariel pink on my list and yeah, agree it’s disingenuous to not rep something that hit you hard before things were made clear. The past ain’t the present, and these lists are just as much a time capsule of past loves as they are a record of present taste

But yeah - idk if it was for shock or whatever but there’s accusations of racism, homophobic and transphobic comments, money laundering schemes with his father, sexual assault… gee idk… too many to count lol

Secrets Of The Beehive feels like the right call. So many of my favourites here like Talk Talk, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Nick Drake and Japan. Nice list.

The Doldrums is pre-fame for Ariel Pink so I don’t think there are any receipts that go back that far. From my knowledge, it was post-“before today” where Ariel Pink became the Ariel pink the world now knows him as.

If I’m being honest I’d be voting for White Album in any list it appears in. But for variety’s sake I might vote Midnight Marauders.
