Giving John Martyn a vote

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 19:35 (one year ago)

Going for Gong, incredible album.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 19:38 (one year ago)

Nice that you picked that Kraftwerk album, engineered to a perfect distillation of their style.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 19:43 (one year ago)

Quite a few artists where I'd have gone for different albums (Mott > The Hoople, for instance) but not "The Modern Dance".

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 19:43 (one year ago)

Voted Laurel Halo but like, aspirationally ...that one hasn't clicked yet

Actress!

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 20:07 (one year ago)

My own choice would be Yes: Close To The Edge. It's been in my life since I bought it unheard at the age of 12, and I can still remember playing it for the first time. Since then, my relationship with it has evolved, and even after 49 years, I can still hear new things in it.

everyone on ILM has great taste. Haven't raised an eyebrow at a single entry by anyone yet.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:09 (one year ago)

out of this list I'm voting Blackstar

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:10 (one year ago)

Voted for the Nic Jaar because no one else will and it's the one I've listened to most regularly in the last few years.

The The

as per a vote elsewhere, "Soul Mining" is an album i have not listened to in a long time, but still means more to me than just about anything else.

mark e, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:21 (one year ago)

fuck it i’m voting Reactivate

Siegbran, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:30 (one year ago)

Soul Mining and N Jaar are both fantastic, cosign

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:33 (one year ago)

this year’s model and the band by the band (oh and exile, duh) are perhaps my gun to head fav rock albums of all time, so

will throw that lindstrom album some love, it is monumental, should be a core ilm text but feels like it's a bit neglected now

imago, Friday, 25 August 2023 09:23 (one year ago)

+1 on Lindstrom

enochroot, Friday, 25 August 2023 09:34 (one year ago)

Straight to Joy of a Toy, no hesitation, what a wonderful record.

MaresNest, Friday, 25 August 2023 09:40 (one year ago)

Reactivate series had the best 90s sleeve art...never got round to buying any tho :/

nashwan, Friday, 25 August 2023 10:02 (one year ago)

the best lindstrom album is ii (would be in my top 50 if i bothered to put one together) but where i go you go too is #2

ufo, Friday, 25 August 2023 10:09 (one year ago)

18+ I love. Is this the first appearance of "Lexicon of Love"? "This Year's Model"?

Notable personal observation: iirc I've yet to come across one of these lists with an album I *hate* on it.

Florin Cuchares, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 05:07 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 22

Favourite: Ubu over Genesis

Least-favourite: The Epic

Nicest surprise: Scott Walker, Shuggie Otis

Unheard, but most want to hear: The Hoople and Gong

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 23:28 (one year ago)

several contenders but went for Gong. Daevid Allen & Euterpe would be 2nd choice. Metal Box and Soul Mining 3rd equal.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 23:34 (one year ago)

The Epic is awesome! Ended up voting for Erykah Badu over Laurel Halo

Dan S, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 23:38 (one year ago)

Went with Lenny Cohen

Don't think I voted in this but if I had it'd've been Feast

I like the spread of these results, Well Done Everybody. The longest part of compiling this list was the data trawling, but my fetish for documentation was a big help. That left a long list of 56, which was easy to whittle down ("is this album actually one of your favourites, or do you just like the idea of it being one of your favourites"). I stuck with subjectivity over objectivity, didn't do any conscious genre/gender/decade/canonical-vs-non-canonical weighting whatsoever, and some genres where my listening is mostly track-based ended up being under-represented, but this is as clear a window into my Wonderful World Of Album Listening as you could get.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 7 September 2023 08:40 (one year ago)

this is one of the best lists in this series of polls imo

boxedjoy, Saturday, 16 September 2023 10:35 (one year ago)

didn't see this somehow but likely would've voted Kevin Ayers or Shuggie Otis
