Prefer 'Liar' to 'Goat' but not much between them and I'm probably basing that on the fact I heard 'Liar' first.

I have no idea. I never knew much about The Fall at the time but I never thought they sounded like them at all. I do believe it was one of their fave bands though.

Pavement used to get Fall comparisons too.

there's a great quote in one of the Pavement reissues (I think) where SM says they were all afraid people were gonna say they sounded like Swell Maps and they didn't expect all the Fall comparisons

At least I can see where that comes from.

I've had 20 of these and a few others I have had other records. This was my era when I was probably a little bit hip as I saw a quite a few of these bands live.

Pavement's 'Two States' does sound quite a bit like the Fall to me. I think GVB it is more that speak sing style is the thing, musically they really are not much at all like the Fall.

earlnash I'm jealous of you seeing these bands live. I missed Fugazi when they toured the UK but i did see Jesus Lizard (at a festival in my hometown)

I love this list. I voted for Dazzling Killmen because they deserve at least one vote.

Most of these bands never got a look in from the UK music press.

Luckily I used to buy import mags from the US like SKYSCRAPER from Borders in Glasgow whenever I was in town record shopping and got to hear about these bands and then try buy them from Missing Records, Avalanche Records, Tower Records or Borders.

Then when Napster came along I got to hear the ones I couldn't track down, then of course, eBay.

Borders had such a great imported magazines rack. I miss that. It was much larger than Tower Records selection.

Unwound vs. Songs: Ohia is a brutal decision for me. absolute monumental records that have meant the world to me.

Maserati is cool but they don't make my top 50 at all. Way down at #185 actually

Sebadoh III is an odd pick. I thought you were more into "bubble and scrape"? "Harmacy" is my fave. Its one where Jason's songs are as good as Lou's.

I am but III was always a fave too. It's interchangeable which is my fave. III is also the first of theirs I ever heard. I have a blue double vinyl US import bought from Missing Records way back in the day.

I do like Seam but I had to leave them and others like Craw, Crain, Cherubs,Moss Icon, Jeromes Dream, Faraquet Antioch Arrow, Heroin, Juno, Get Up Kids, Promise Ring and a whole host of others off the list like bands on Constellation, Kranky, Skin Graft, Load,Quarterstick etc.

Both Gospel & City Of Caterpillar put out their 2nd albums last year, 20+ years after their debuts. They were great too.

Voted Drive Like Jehu but could easily have chosen Palace, Shellac, Jesus Lizard, For Carnation etc.

I've mentioned it before but US indie rock from 95 to 00 is kinda unknown to me for the most part. There were my favourites like Pavement, Sebadoh and Sonic Youth but I didnt venture past that. By then, US indie rock was never mentioned in the Britpop obsessed UK weeklies (or yr Uncuts and Mojo's) and I think my taste was shifting anyway at that point.

I was checking more canonical stuff and using that as a away to branch out - Scott Walker, Miles Davis, Beach Boys...Dance music was pretty strong too so I was more interested in that rather than dudes with guitars at the time.

Yank Crime is the no-brainer for me, BUT—

It was random chance that I ever got into them back then and I’ve never met anyone IRL who knows of them. And only met one person online who really loved them. I strongly associate them and Craw together because I got into both at the same time. Actually I think I bought the first Craw album and saw them thank DK in their liner notes, which is why I sought them out.

—agree with above re For Carnation. For better or worse it exists in the shadow of Slint but that s/t album probably stands up to Spiderland better than any other post-Slint offshoot any of those guys did. It feels to me like the evolution of where they were headed.

I also had a break from dudes with guitars, but I've found myself returning more frequently to Codeine than most of their peers lately. Not something I would even have predicted from my youthful preferences, but I think my vote here shall reflect that. (Plus the thread suggests they might need some love lol.)

Considered Will Oldham et al before realising that I initially misread that as that Lost Blues... singles comp, which is a slightly more fabulous (cheating) experience IMHO.

Honestly, only really Tortoise, Sebadoh, The God Machine and Shellac got coverage in the UK press out of all these bands. Even Melody Maker was going shit thanks to Britpop.

The mythology around Slint is such that of course when Brian McMahan was unconscious after the car accident he awoke singing "We Are 138" by the Misfits. I like to think that he what he actually brought back with him is what ended up on the For Carnation records.

When was the car accident?

My memory isn't precise but I think it was in the run-up to recording *Spiderland*. It was a pretty bad accident and McMahan was in bad shape. I think his heart might have stopped. He came round in the ambulance, singing "We Are 138" by the Misfits.

I didn't know about those rumours. It's certainly a unique record, I can't think of much that sounds like it. I suppose Titus Andronicus' "The Monitor" has similar crazy ambition and thematic depth.

Great live band, which reminds me... Someone recently pointed out to me that J0hn Dwy3r wrote the liner notes or something for some reissue which is funny BECAUSE I went to both Laddio Bolocko shows they played locally with a coworker of mine and said coworker told J0hn about the shows which were not on his radar (he was probably between Pink & Brown and Coachwhips at the time).
