I left out a few obvious things like Slint, NMH, Pavement etc .

I didn't spend much time on it so no doubt I've left out a few faves so choose your fave from the list but feel free to recommend similar bands/albums!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:22 (one year ago)

A few here I've never heard of such as Dazzling Killmen. What a name

Prefer 'Liar' to 'Goat' but not much between them and I'm probably basing that on the fact I heard 'Liar' first.

Going to go with Shellac. That riff on "My black ass" is el scorchio.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 21:26 (one year ago)

Camofleur narrowly edging out Four Great Points

Snoopy is a cat, who lives in a cage (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:25 (one year ago)

The only one I'm sure I've heard is Magnolia Electric Co.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:29 (one year ago)

Gastr, easy pick

H.P, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 23:27 (one year ago)

Voted Sebadoh III. Nice to see it on a list.

Clientless (Scooter's Version) (morrisp), Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:38 (one year ago)

Voted Viva b/c am getting back into that one--esp love Jason Loewenstein's contributions to it (shout-out to Sebadoh III)

I wanted to give Acetone some love but had to go with Duster... that album was so huge for me like 15 years ago when I stumbled on it. Still treasure it of course.

I love American Analog Set so much. Glad to see someone else does.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:34 (one year ago)

Nice list. The For Carnation for me. That I could clamber to the frozen moon and draw the ladder after me.

(picnic, lightning) very very frightening (Chinaski), Thursday, 24 August 2023 11:00 (one year ago)

Such a great and underrated album. I would have made a spotify list but I don't think they are all on there.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:14 (one year ago)

Changed my mind and went for Girls Against Boys.. More bands should sound like them

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 24 August 2023 18:26 (one year ago)

I remember when GVSB kept getting Fall clones. I dunno if that was just a UK press thing?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 19:20 (one year ago)

Wonderful Radio?

🙂

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 24 August 2023 19:39 (one year ago)

I kid! Lightning Bolt gets my vote. (How the heck did I forget to put this album on my own list?)

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 24 August 2023 19:41 (one year ago)

haha I didn't notice that.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 20:06 (one year ago)

I remember when GVSB kept getting Fall clones. I dunno if that was just a UK press thing?

― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, August 24, 2023 7:20 PM (one hour ago)

But of a lazy comparison. They don't sound like The Fall. Did The Fall have 2 bass players at one point?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:11 (one year ago)

I have no idea. I never knew much about The Fall at the time but I never thought they sounded like them at all. I do believe it was one of their fave bands though.

Pavement used to get Fall comparisons too.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:36 (one year ago)

there's a great quote in one of the Pavement reissues (I think) where SM says they were all afraid people were gonna say they sounded like Swell Maps and they didn't expect all the Fall comparisons

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:44 (one year ago)

At least I can see where that comes from.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:49 (one year ago)

I've had 20 of these and a few others I have had other records. This was my era when I was probably a little bit hip as I saw a quite a few of these bands live.

Come
Dazzling Killmen
Don Caballero
Fugazi
GVB
Jesus Lizard
June of 44
Shellac
Tortoise
Maserati (this band I saw like 8-9 years ago...not a 90s thing.)

Pavement's 'Two States' does sound quite a bit like the Fall to me. I think GVB it is more that speak sing style is the thing, musically they really are not much at all like the Fall.

earlnash, Friday, 25 August 2023 00:14 (one year ago)

Songs Ohia as it is the same album that made my list. Nice list and could have voted for several others

Bee OK, Friday, 25 August 2023 02:34 (one year ago)

earlnash I'm jealous of you seeing these bands live. I missed Fugazi when they toured the UK but i did see Jesus Lizard (at a festival in my hometown)

With Songs:Ohia, it was either that or The Lioness.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 08:15 (one year ago)

I saw Fugazi in Limerick in '02

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 25 August 2023 10:39 (one year ago)

I love this list. I voted for Dazzling Killmen because they deserve at least one vote.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:27 (one year ago)

Most of these bands never got a look in from the UK music press.

Luckily I used to buy import mags from the US like SKYSCRAPER from Borders in Glasgow whenever I was in town record shopping and got to hear about these bands and then try buy them from Missing Records, Avalanche Records, Tower Records or Borders.

Then when Napster came along I got to hear the ones I couldn't track down, then of course, eBay.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 15:40 (one year ago)

Borders had such a great imported magazines rack. I miss that. It was much larger than Tower Records selection.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 15:41 (one year ago)

Unwound vs. Songs: Ohia is a brutal decision for me. absolute monumental records that have meant the world to me.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 25 August 2023 16:01 (one year ago)

Maserati is cool but they don't make my top 50 at all. Way down at #185 actually

Sebadoh III is an odd pick. I thought you were more into "bubble and scrape"? "Harmacy" is my fave. Its one where Jason's songs are as good as Lou's.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 25 August 2023 19:54 (one year ago)

I am but III was always a fave too. It's interchangeable which is my fave. III is also the first of theirs I ever heard. I have a blue double vinyl US import bought from Missing Records way back in the day.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 19:58 (one year ago)

The cheater Sebadoh "best CD" is this weird German import two-fer I got at Aron's Records way back in 1992:

I have the 2 EPs (on separate CDs)

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 20:22 (one year ago)

Smash Yr Head (which pulls tracks from those two) is honestly my favorite single Sebadoh album. III is pretty special too, though

ROSE, W. AXL UNITED STATES INDIVIDUAL (morrisp), Friday, 25 August 2023 20:45 (one year ago)

I thought Smash Yr Head had the entire EPs on it?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 08:27 (one year ago)

No love for "The problem with me" by Seam?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 26 August 2023 12:57 (one year ago)

xp Nope, just certain tracks (the “harsher” ones?)… sequenced to flow:

“Crisis" (Gaffney) - 2:52 *
"Brand New Love" (Barlow) - 4:04
"Notsur Dnoura Selcric" (Loewenstein) - 3:04
"Vampire" (Barlow) - 2:43 *
"Good Things" (Barlow) - 1:26
"Cecilia Chime in Melee" (Gaffney) - 4:19
"Everybody's Been Burned" (David Crosby) 3:15
"Junk Bonds" - (Loewenstein) 1:53 *
"New Worship" (Barlow) - 2:21
"Mean Distance" (Gaffney) - 3:12
"Pink Moon" (Nick Drake) - 2:02
"Mind Meld" (Fay) - 7:10 *
An asterisk (*) denotes tracks taken from Rocking the Forest.

ROSE, W. AXL UNITED STATES INDIVIDUAL (morrisp), Saturday, 26 August 2023 14:10 (one year ago)

Ahh ok. That's strange.

No love for "The problem with me" by Seam?

I do like Seam but I had to leave them and others like Craw, Crain, Cherubs,Moss Icon, Jeromes Dream, Faraquet Antioch Arrow, Heroin, Juno, Get Up Kids, Promise Ring and a whole host of others off the list like bands on Constellation, Kranky, Skin Graft, Load,Quarterstick etc.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 18:08 (one year ago)

Damnit, I forgot to include a Rachel's album.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 19:51 (one year ago)

argh I forgot Unsane

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 19:56 (one year ago)

Which of these do you reckon I'd like? These are all just names to me

Gospel - The Moon Is A Dead World
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is
Shiner - The Egg
Shipping News - Save Everything
The Black Heart Procession - 2
Caustic Resin - Fly Me To The Moon
Dazzling Killmen - Face Of Collapse
Gastr del Sol - Camoufleur
The Fucking Champs - III
Three Mile Pilot - Another Desert, Another Sea
Sam Shalabi - Pink Abyss
Turing Machine - A New Machine For Living

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 26 August 2023 21:50 (one year ago)

I'd be surprised if you didnt like Gospel (proggy screamo-core)
Shipping News = Jason Noble & Jeff Mueller of Rodan.
The Black Heart Procession & Three Mile Pilot share the same guy (BHP was supposedly the side project but they sold more records) Im sure I've played them both to you before in plug.
Caustic Resin are a noisier built to spill (both from Boise)

so start with them?

I also can't believe I didn't put a Today Is The Day album on here. Noise rock at its finest.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 21:56 (one year ago)

Both Gospel & City Of Caterpillar put out their 2nd albums last year, 20+ years after their debuts. They were great too.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 26 August 2023 21:57 (one year ago)

I've heard some Gastr Del Sol stuff before like 'The Seasons Reverse'. Onto that Chicago post rock thing

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 26 August 2023 22:08 (one year ago)

Whatever happened to Bundy K Brown?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Sunday, 27 August 2023 08:42 (one year ago)

I had a tough choice choosing which DMST album.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 09:55 (one year ago)

Voted Drive Like Jehu but could easily have chosen Palace, Shellac, Jesus Lizard, For Carnation etc.

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Monday, 28 August 2023 10:53 (one year ago)

Listening to Caustic Resin. Its definitely the most psych rock band I've heard from yr list

― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 28 August 2023 08:47 (five hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

I was expecting you to say it reminded you of Built To Spill.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 14:35 (one year ago)

I've mentioned it before but US indie rock from 95 to 00 is kinda unknown to me for the most part. There were my favourites like Pavement, Sebadoh and Sonic Youth but I didnt venture past that. By then, US indie rock was never mentioned in the Britpop obsessed UK weeklies (or yr Uncuts and Mojo's) and I think my taste was shifting anyway at that point.

I was checking more canonical stuff and using that as a away to branch out - Scott Walker, Miles Davis, Beach Boys...Dance music was pretty strong too so I was more interested in that rather than dudes with guitars at the time.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 28 August 2023 15:20 (one year ago)

Yank Crime is the no-brainer for me, BUT—

—I got a thrill seeing Dazzling Killmen on the list and even happier to see others in the thread talking about them. It was random chance that I ever got into them back then and I’ve never met anyone IRL who knows of them. And only met one person online who really loved them. I strongly associate them and Craw together because I got into both at the same time. Actually I think I bought the first Craw album and saw them thank DK in their liner notes, which is why I sought them out.

—agree with above re For Carnation. For better or worse it exists in the shadow of Slint but that s/t album probably stands up to Spiderland better than any other post-Slint offshoot any of those guys did. It feels to me like the evolution of where they were headed.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Monday, 28 August 2023 15:47 (one year ago)

I also had a break from dudes with guitars, but I've found myself returning more frequently to Codeine than most of their peers lately. Not something I would even have predicted from my youthful preferences, but I think my vote here shall reflect that. (Plus the thread suggests they might need some love lol.)

Considered Will Oldham et al before realising that I initially misread that as that Lost Blues... singles comp, which is a slightly more fabulous (cheating) experience IMHO.

Weirdly, I know I own that Black Heart Procession record but can't remember it! Shall listen...

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 28 August 2023 15:52 (one year ago)

lol its a typo, I did mean that comp as it has Stable Will on it (my fave song)

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 15:53 (one year ago)

i mean i put the wrong title in as opposed to a typo

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 15:54 (one year ago)

Aha! :)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 28 August 2023 15:55 (one year ago)

Same, but I got Napster in 2000 and was buying Skyscraper then downloading a bunch of stuff then trying to track down albums on infrequent trips to Glasgow when I had money

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 15:56 (one year ago)

Honestly, only really Tortoise, Sebadoh, The God Machine and Shellac got coverage in the UK press out of all these bands. Even Melody Maker was going shit thanks to Britpop.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 15:59 (one year ago)

fugazi

ava (paolo), Monday, 28 August 2023 18:11 (one year ago)

I know it's not what you meant, but iirc Fugazi knocked back an NME cover story. They did get live reviews though and mentions in EOY lists.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 18:22 (one year ago)

Fugazi knocked back an NME cover story

Why?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 28 August 2023 18:40 (one year ago)

They refused to do interviews with mainstream media. Fanzines only.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 28 August 2023 18:41 (one year ago)

Fugazi otm as ever.

The mythology around Slint is such that of course when Brian McMahan was unconscious after the car accident he awoke singing "We Are 138" by the Misfits. I like to think that he what he actually brought back with him is what ended up on the For Carnation records.

(picnic, lightning) very very frightening (Chinaski), Monday, 28 August 2023 19:00 (one year ago)

When was the car accident?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 08:11 (one year ago)

My memory isn't precise but I think it was in the run-up to recording *Spiderland*. It was a pretty bad accident and McMahan was in bad shape. I think his heart might have stopped. He came round in the ambulance, singing "We Are 138" by the Misfits.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 19:32 (one year ago)

lotta classics on here, but had to go with bardo pond, personally the heaviest influence on me out of any of these.

Such a great band.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 07:44 (one year ago)

gimme indie votes!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 7 September 2023 08:09 (one year ago)

Voted Tortoise. I predict it will win too.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 7 September 2023 08:16 (one year ago)

Some of these polls do have surprise winners but you might be right since the Tortoise album is one that got a lot of UK press coverage.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 7 September 2023 13:03 (one year ago)

Ideally every album would get at least one vote.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 7 September 2023 13:04 (one year ago)

Voted. For the one that blew me away the most when I heard it at the time, not for the one I currently love the most.

Is it Tortoise?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 7 September 2023 16:40 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 4, two of which are pretty new to me

Favourite: Bark Psychosis over Tortoise

Least-favourite: GYBE, who are fine

Nicest surprise: ?

Unheard, but most want to hear: Fugazi, Jesus Lizard, Low

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 7 September 2023 17:16 (one year ago)

I think Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow has a pop at winning this btw. It was quite the ILM favourite back in the day.

Pretty impressive that almost every album got at least one vote!

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 8 September 2023 01:28 (one year ago)

Is it Tortoise?

It's Modest Mouse :-) Lift To Experience was close on its heels. Tortoise I didn't hear until a couple years after its release.
Did pull out Millions Now Living Will Never Die yesterday for the first time in years! Current favourite is The Curtain Hits The Cast.

willem, Friday, 8 September 2023 07:03 (one year ago)

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 8 September 2023 08:15 (one year ago)

Sad for Lift to Experience, where are all the Country & Western/Emo/Post-rock cross-over fans at?

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Friday, 8 September 2023 08:48 (one year ago)

I thought that had a chance of winning. I wonder if they got no votes due to the cult rumours posted about on ilm?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 8 September 2023 08:51 (one year ago)

I didn't know about those rumours. It's certainly a unique record, I can't think of much that sounds like it. I suppose Titus Andronicus' "The Monitor" has similar crazy ambition and thematic depth.

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Friday, 8 September 2023 08:58 (one year ago)

I loved The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads when it came out but I fell in love again/even more with the 2017 mix/remaster

willem, Friday, 8 September 2023 09:48 (one year ago)

Yeah, same.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 8 September 2023 09:59 (one year ago)

I wonder if everybody just assumed others would vote for it.

Maybe I should poll the ones that go no votes.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 8 September 2023 11:09 (one year ago)

The Hella album just got a reissue btw. Anyone heard it?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 8 September 2023 18:51 (one year ago)

DID ANYBODY IN THIS BITCH LIKE LADDIO BOLOCKO?

Great live band, which reminds me... Someone recently pointed out to me that J0hn Dwy3r wrote the liner notes or something for some reissue which is funny BECAUSE I went to both Laddio Bolocko shows they played locally with a coworker of mine and said coworker told J0hn about the shows which were not on his radar (he was probably between Pink & Brown and Coachwhips at the time).
