Songs that make your chest feel funny

Hello hello. I'm listening to Lioness by Songs: Ohia at the minute - got me thinking about that wonderful drop-in-the-ocean feeling that certain songs and artists give me. Other examples include Ben's My Friend by Sun Kil Moon (also his cover of Neverending Math Equation), Birthday by The Sugarcubes, Farewell Transmission also by Songs: Ohia, Cup of Dreams by Thinking Fellers Union, New Partner by Palace Music, Hey Moon by Molly Nilsson and John Maus, The Fool or Naomi by Neutral Milk Hotel

Do you know what I mean? Stuff with this big, cavernous sound that makes you feel very small? Suits sitting in your garden at nighttime? I love that feeling. Most of my favourite songs fall into this category

I'm new here, so for my first post I'd like to hear what songs give you that nice heavy chest feeling (and if you have any recommendations for songs and artists similar to the ones I've listed I would love to hear them)

Stay cool

This is my room

Banjo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:00 (two years ago)

yes this is my missus. she wanted to know what all the fuss was about

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:01 (two years ago)

Chumbawumba reminds me of being a little baby playing Donkey Konga video game. Also no we don't know each other. I don't like him

“Daniel” - Bat For Lashes maybe? it sounds like that for me

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:06 (two years ago)

God ya I remember listening to Daniel on repeat when I was skippin school and crying into overly-sweet lattes. That says nothing about the song though, it's great. I'm gonna stick it on

felt - the world is as soft as lace

brimstead, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:10 (two years ago)

I wonder if something like Hidden Place by Bjork would count here

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:08 (two years ago)

Only if Phoebe Bridgers has covered it

First thing I could think of was 'Holocaust' by Big Star. I guess it's more a bleakly emotional feeling in the chest than the good feeling of vastness that you describe but there's something about the instrumentation that definitely gets that "everything is so big and I am but a speck" vibe that I *think* you're after?

Swans album “the seer” made me physically nauseous

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:28 (two years ago)

Bauhaus, "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything"

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:15 (two years ago)

Don’t know if I quite get the concept but I’ll nominate “Shivers” as performed by the Boys Next Door.

Clientless (Scooter's Version) (morrisp), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:21 (two years ago)

ooh nice one, otm for me

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:27 (two years ago)

Girls - Vomit

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 24 August 2023 03:12 (two years ago)

The music that I relate to star-gazing (or to feeling as a drop in the ocean so to speak) is drone or psychedelic…

Lately I’ve been revisiting:

Li Jianhong - San Sheng Shi
Yellow Swans - Going Places

I think both work for me

Radar Bros. - Stay
Elysian Fields - Anything You Like

welcome to the fold y'all

nightgarden is a pretty good band name, it's no hospital radio of course but what is

Florin Cuchares, Thursday, 24 August 2023 03:35 (two years ago)

eno & cale - spinning away.

I have to be careful how often I listen to it as it can stay in my head making me existentially giddy for days.

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 24 August 2023 07:26 (two years ago)

If we're talking stargazing then Lambchop - The Distance From Her To There

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2023 07:33 (two years ago)

xpost i discovered that album the other day - maybe it was on your list?

"spinning away" and "lay my love" are the two that really stood out to me. "a silent silver plane, it draws a golden chain" is a pretty immortal line

tremolo, Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:16 (two years ago)

it was on alfred's, i'm not doing one!

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:24 (two years ago)

you have all given me plenty of sonic snacks for my trainride thanks. queuing them all up now

Banjo, Thursday, 24 August 2023 10:41 (two years ago)

I like this sound a lot. Instantly thought of Waves by Slowdive.

Also, for literal stargazing (and a song that hits me in the chest), Stargazer by the Zephyrs.

(picnic, lightning) very very frightening (Chinaski), Thursday, 24 August 2023 11:31 (two years ago)
