I love Private Parts so much. We had a dog that suddenly went blind because of a heat stroke. When we’d leave her alone during the day I would always have Private Parts playing, hoping that the sound would help her orient herself. I don’t know if I could listen to it again, it would probably bring up lots of sadness.

I've explained this before some place but imo there are tens of thousands of records (at least!) out there that qualify for "the greatest records" based on numbers alone - you know, the top one tenth of one percent of record sound is still a staggering amount of music. in that sense, these are also all some of my favorite records. i have a lot of favorite records.

trapdoor would be on a list of most influential sound recordings for me, for sure. first dead C i heard back in high school, based on readings from alt.music.sonic-youth.

Almost every Indian 78 I have came from Crumb.

Lucinda s/t - yes love this record.

that's not my post, Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:06 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 10

Favourite: Tusk over Kate Bush and the Band

Least-favourite: The Roches (though "Hammond Song" is a masterpiece)

Nicest surprise: just days ago I was thinking, "who would put High Winds White Sky on a list like this?" Empty Foxhole too

Unheard, but most want to hear: Lucinda Williams or Private Parts

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 25 August 2023 21:37 (one year ago)

Not too many I'm familiar with here, but it's nice to see the Lucinda Williams album pop up.

Least-favourite: The Roches

also FPed you for this

The Roches is my currently most listened to one on here, but think I gotta give it to Hard to Earn, love to see it here

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 25 August 2023 21:41 (one year ago)

I get the Roches can be polarizing - that album veers about wildly. But I love it all at this point, even if some of it took a while to hit right. But I can't imagine thinking Hammond Song is a masterpiece but somehow Pretty & High is not? I'm also a big fan of The Married Man and tbh Mr Sellack and Damned Old Dog, but those three all took some working their way into my brain before it worked.

I really need to get into The Roches a bit more. I like what I've heard!

Voted Kate Bush, had to.

Have to go for the patriotic option. 1908 to 1931 truly the golden age of string music in Portugal.

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 27 August 2023 08:31 (one year ago)

Tbh a chunk of that collection was recorded by immigrants in the US but the point stands.

Was between Robert Ashley, Yusuf Lateef and Julie Tippets. Went Tippets because, well, the sun was setting.

Wow, Sunset Glow is sounding exactly like something I should have heard (of) before today. These threads roolz.

I can't imagine thinking Hammond Song is a masterpiece but somehow Pretty & High is not?

The latter song is going for a similar mood, but it winds up quizzical and indirect rather than communicating a strong feeling. I just feel they went against their strengths too often - they're sometimes clever but really not very funny. Probably my favourite record of theirs is the early Seductive Reasoning.

Results seem about right.
Sad hackamore brick got no votes. That record is a delight. Likewise Willis Alan Ramsey, COB, Arthur Jones “Scorpio” and Steve Lacy’s “the flame” - feel like they have pretty broad appeal
