o.nate's fifty favorite albums (that did not place in the RYM top 100 for their year)

OK, what the hell. To make the choices more exciting, or at least more obscure, I excluded albums that placed in the top 100 on Rate Your Music for their year of release. (The one that came closest was Espers II, at #104 for 2006.) Which means these are actually selected from my top 200 or so albums. I cheated a bit by including compilations, but largely skipped classical, which is harder to rank because of the sheer number of releases of the same material.

what does rym have against trompe le monde

is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:44 (one year ago)

Very surprised some of these aren’t in their years top 100. Voted workingman’s dead

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:08 (one year ago)

also surprised and voted for that (not just a protest; it's the one I've most recently listened to).

dow, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:37 (one year ago)

Yeah that one seems like a bit of a ringer. I suspect it’s perhaps because American Beauty came out the same year and that’s probably most people’s pick (actually would probably be my pick too, but they’re both great).

o. nate, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:44 (one year ago)

Workingsmans dead >>>>>>>>>>>>> american beauty

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:51 (one year ago)

I’ve gone back and forth on which I prefer, and probably will again. Both are nearly flawless.

o. nate, Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:58 (one year ago)

That's a cool list criterion. Might have to go for The Stevens or Heavenly if only because they may struggle to find much love here too!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:27 (one year ago)

i also voted workingman's dead - i don't think they've ever written a song more beautiful than "black peter". can't believe it's so far down the list on RYM!

agreed with Nag, that's a great way of making a list more interesting

tremolo, Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:32 (one year ago)

Totally agree on “Black Peter”. That song and “Dire Wolf” are two that I think about a lot.

o. nate, Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:26 (one year ago)

King Krule is one of the most headscratching modern artists I see people rave on about. I can’t get into that detuned drunk drawl of a voice.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:37 (one year ago)

I have a soft spot for abrasive voices if the singer has a good sense of rhythm and dynamics. I would’ve included a Howlin Wolf album here but alas he is too popular on RYM. The blues and percussive style blues singing are a recurring element in many of my favorite records.

o. nate, Thursday, 24 August 2023 14:37 (one year ago)

I mean I adore Howlin Wolf and Beefheart and Tom Waits and the Cookie Monster but King Krule doesn’t sound as tuneful to my ears. I might need to give him another chance.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 14:42 (one year ago)

I've gotten so many plays and so much joy from that Cosimo Matassa comp.

Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable POST (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 24 August 2023 14:57 (one year ago)

It really is a cornucopia of riches. It’s cheating a bit since there’s like 120 tracks on that thing, but considering you can find it online for about the price of a new CD, it seems fair game to include.

o. nate, Thursday, 24 August 2023 19:30 (one year ago)

ugh so hard to choose between Espers, Chastity Belt and Stara Rzeka

Dinsdale, Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:25 (one year ago)

Modern Times is really good. It surprised me for a late period Dylan album.

Going with Contra though, one of the best of that decade

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 24 August 2023 21:34 (one year ago)

Went for Vampire Weekend as well

Bee OK, Friday, 25 August 2023 02:49 (one year ago)

I should have included Elvis Presley's He Touched Me (#750 for 1972). It's tied with Elvis in Memphis (#96 for 1969) as my favorite Elvis album.

o. nate, Monday, 28 August 2023 20:53 (one year ago)

got excited when i saw WIN at the end of the list.
should have known it was not going to be the WIN that i love.
subsequently, had to give a vote for GHOST as it's the only album i know and love out of this list.

mark e, Monday, 28 August 2023 21:00 (one year ago)

Trompe and Contra surprise me - maybe Contra was one of those things where it got too popular too fast which always causes the RYM ranking to drop. Trompe le Monde I would've guessed was Top 25 but idk maybe 1991 is just a really stacked year

gonna vote Koenjihyakkei cuz I love that album, easily one of the best in uh whatever genre that is

frogbs, Monday, 28 August 2023 21:10 (one year ago)

xp

Win from Edinburgh? I'm not familiar with them, but curiously I see they have an album called "Freaky Trigger" which makes it seem like they may have some historical significance around these parts.

The Win Win I was thinking of are electro-pop producers doing kind of a dance-rock crossover thing a la Hot Chip, Justice, Phoenix, and other big-name bands of the early '10s.

o. nate, Monday, 28 August 2023 21:24 (one year ago)

yup, that WIN, and indeed the crew that released Freaky Trigger.
as good as FT was, tis all about their debut though.
an album that still has not been given a reissue, hence the silly prices

I like a bunch of these, voted Modern Times because it's my favorite late-era Dylan album. I kind of think it's underrated vs. the rest of the post-1995 stuff.

Modern Times is easily the Dylan album I've listened to most in the past 10 years.

Number of albums heard: 8

Favourite: Bananamour (despite "While Your Parents are Asleep") over Workingman's Dead (despite "Easy Wind")

Least-favourite: Seeds of Love - decent songs overproduced and dragged out too long

Nicest surprise: FFS

Unheard, but most want to hear: Sandy Denny

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 01:36 (one year ago)

contra is an all-time classic

Seeds of Love - decent songs overproduced and dragged out too long

I couldn't disagree more (of course I would though!) I wouldn't say it's overproduced - I'd say it's produced just the right amount. Or rather I'd say the production is incredibly sumptuous and the album sounds amazing. I don't know how much it cost to record, but it sounds like it cost a lot. As far as songs being dragged out too long, I'd say that the only song that to me risks overstaying its welcome is the title track and lead single "Seeds of Love". That seems like it sticks to closely to the same melodic material and hammers the same hook a bit too much (although it is a great hook, don't get me wrong). The other long tracks to me seem to earn their length.

Pleasantly surprised to see votes for some things I can’t remember having seen discussed on this board.
