Up until the 'M's anyway. Left out Peter Gabriel entirely as he has too many s/t albums. Ghost is the proper Ghost and not the Swedish Europe-wannabes. Most of these are older albums as I'm old and only listen to old man's music.

there's no such thing as a winnable volume war (Matt #2), Thursday, 24 August 2023 11:23 (one year ago)

Went with Faust this time

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 24 August 2023 11:26 (one year ago)

out of interest: the first, second, or third self-titled malicorne album? (would vote for the second)

no lime tangier, Thursday, 24 August 2023 11:38 (one year ago)

Good point, it's the second one from 1975 aka Le Mariage Anglais in one of the reissues but I'm still counting it.

Too many good ones.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 24 August 2023 11:53 (one year ago)

Ooh. Fotheringay, maybe?

Restrict it to acts with an umlaut in their name?

Great theme! Gravitating towards Gruppo D'improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza but it's been a while. Shall refresh my memory of some stuff.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:12 (one year ago)

The Band

Bee OK, Friday, 25 August 2023 03:04 (one year ago)

I had forgotten all about Angel until Veg's sleaze thread.

Great lineup. Had The Band locked in for a second, but Boston is just undeniable.

got it in the blood, the kid's a pelican (Doctor Casino), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:37 (one year ago)

Some capsule reviews of the lesser-known acts from the list!

After Dinner - early-80s Japanese avant-prog, more quirky chanson/theatrical influences than Magma though
Arachnoid - late-70s French avant prog in the vein of King Crimson
Archaïa - late-70s French avant prog in the vein of Magma
Armageddon - Keith Relf's post-Yardbirds/Renaissance and pre-death by electrocution band. UK's answer to Captain Beyond maybe, lengthy LZ-inspited proggy hard rock
Blind Idiot God - by far the best act from SST's late-80s foray into instrumental music, almost proto-black metal other than the reggae tracks of course
Coltemönikha - lesser-known side-project of Yasutaka Nakata (Perfume/Kyary PP producer). Sounds like everything else he does
Barry Dransfield - early-70s UK folk-rock, erring towards the folk end of that particular spectrum

there's no such thing as a winnable volume war (Matt #2), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:51 (one year ago)

Gracious! - proto-prog, heard worse
Ground-Zero - Otomo Yoshihide's noise-rock band, Naked City without the archness
Gruppo D'improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza - Ennio Morricone & chums play free-form improv
Haco - After Dinner singer in a minimal ethno-pop vein
Happy End - Hosono's early psych-pop band
High Tide - grunt rock/prog/psych with amazing fuzz guitaring and insane violin work from Simon House, later of Hawkwind/Bowie

there's no such thing as a winnable volume war (Matt #2), Friday, 25 August 2023 12:56 (one year ago)

Voted Ground Zero

MaresNest, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:02 (one year ago)

I.S.O. - Otomo Yoshihide & Sachiko M again in a minimal sinewave style this time
Kampec Dolores - Hungarian avant-rock, for fans of both The Ex and Márta Sebestyén
Lard Free - early band of Gilbert Artman of Urban Sax, for fans of Faust and Amon Düül 1
Lost Aaraaff - v. early Keiji Haino band, imagine Conlon Nancarrow forming a psych-rock band and you'd be getting close(r)
Malicorne - French electric folk
Albert Marcoeur - French, for fans of Aksak Maboul if there are any
Marcus - mid-70s American hard rock, like a cross between Zep and Alice Cooper erring towards the glam. Was never going to sell a lot tbh
Maxophone - Italian prog aka RPI

there's no such thing as a winnable volume war (Matt #2), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:03 (one year ago)

Great great list this one, very hard to choose but Nuova Consonanza just over Lost Aaraaff.

atonar, Friday, 25 August 2023 21:05 (one year ago)

Fuck voted Kraftwerk after noticing Ground Zero was there

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 25 August 2023 21:09 (one year ago)

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Friday, 25 August 2023 21:11 (one year ago)

Plenty I love here, but Mark Hollis' is top 10 or 5 all-time for me, so makes it easy.

Soundslike, Friday, 25 August 2023 23:56 (one year ago)

Bill Fay

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 26 August 2023 00:25 (one year ago)

is that the intended Fairport Convention debut, or the re-named (for America) What We Did On Our Holidays?

dow, Saturday, 26 August 2023 02:58 (one year ago)

So much confusion with self-titled albums! Anyway this is the edition I own, so that I guess: https://www.discogs.com/release/2101166-Fairport-Convention-Fairport-Convention

faust sofa (Matt #2), Saturday, 26 August 2023 11:15 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 14 (if the Cluster album is AKA Cluster '71)

Favourite: "Mark Hollis is top 10 or 5 all-time for me"

Least-favourite: Boston

Nicest surprise: Captain Beyond

Unheard, but most want to hear: Egg; never heard Armageddon except for "Silver Tightrope" on the radio well over 30 years ago

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 28 August 2023 02:16 (one year ago)

Angel Witch. fucking classic album.

I can't turn a fart into a question (Neanderthal), Monday, 28 August 2023 02:29 (one year ago)

System, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

shit, i missed this one, i definitely would've voted archaia

y'all hear "harmonie solaire"? it actually sounds very fuckin' rad

egg's s/t has some songs i like a lot on it - "i will be absorbed" in particular - but "the polite force" is the one i come back to most.

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 01:14 (one year ago)

Thanks for the votes folks, pt. 2 already in the pipeline!

look i'm not sally fucking rooney (Matt #2), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 01:59 (one year ago)

Glad to see Hollis get some love

Soundslike, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 02:08 (one year ago)

Oh hell yeah I love ILM top 2 results OTM!!! I don’t think I even voted on this one. Been rocking “the night they drove old Dixie down” the past month and it nearly made me pick the album over “big pink” in my poll. Anyways, great stuff. Would have given cluster a vote if I knew it wouldn’t get any!
