The Tipsy 50

This is richly informed by the lists that have gone before, but mostly just about things that have resonated at different times and still do. A bunch of compilations at the front end because that's how I encountered and know all of them. I know it's unfair to include Star Time but ... that's the JB I have and love. Organized roughly by when they came out, but don't hold me to that. The U.S. editions because likewise. Flowers will always be my favorite Stones album, and why not?

already voted for The Dreaming in ian's poll so I went with another sentimental high school fave, the 1979 version of The Clash S/T

but It's Alive came very close

Many favourites: Everlys, Chuck Berry, Beatles, VU (the third album, I assume), American Graffiti, Dylan, X-Ray Spex, JAMC. One album, either The Velvet Underground or The Great Twenty-Eight.

32 I could imagine in a hypothetical list! Points for "I Feel Alright," what an album.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 August 2023 04:13 (one year ago)

Yeah, the 3rd s/t VU. Love them all, but that one is sort of on its own planet.

And for real, I Feel Alright is just one great tune after another. He was on fire right then.

Have been waiting for this one,, a lot of overlap with mine. Voting Blondie on this one, saw them in 2019? And they brought it, was pleasantly surprised considering age.

Bee OK, Friday, 25 August 2023 04:28 (one year ago)

Great Luomo album. Voted YMG, probably my most-enjoyed album to not make my own 50

I don’t own a copy of Damn The Torpedoes anymore so forgot to put it on my list. One of the defining albums for my friend group in high school.

that's not my post, Friday, 25 August 2023 05:27 (one year ago)

From the ones I've heard, I picked Graceland. I looked up the tracklisting of the US edition of Rubber Soul and saw that it leaves out 'If I Needed Someone', which is my favourite song on the UK/Europe release.

Valentijn, Friday, 25 August 2023 07:15 (one year ago)

I don’t listen to this album anymore, but at the time I was obsessed with it, so that’s my vote:

Eminem - The Slim Shady LP

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 25 August 2023 09:37 (one year ago)

Same, really. I can’t remember the last time I listened to Eminem on purpose, but that album especially was huge for me at the time.

lol I don't even know what to vote for in my own poll. Are other people actually voting in theirs? It was hard enough for me to get it down to 50, I don't know if I can pick one.

I know I can't (pick just one that is.) Half this list is my favorites.

Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable POST (Dan Peterson), Monday, 28 August 2023 14:17 (one year ago)

I didn't vote in mine. I thought of an album I'd like to vote for and then remembered I didn't include it in favor of a different one by the same artist.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Monday, 28 August 2023 14:22 (one year ago)

You know what, I have said before that that first Clash album — the U.S. edition — is the album I've listened to more total times than anything else, and I have a feeling that's still true. So probably I should go with that. There were whole years of high school where I listened to it at least once a week on my Walkman on the bus.

nation of millions

ava (paolo), Monday, 28 August 2023 18:16 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 31

Favourite: The Dreaming over Dylan and OutKast

Least-favourite: Stop Making Sense - great movie, boring record

Nicest surprise: Willie Dixon or Flowers

Unheard, but most want to hear: all of Star Time

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 28 August 2023 19:14 (one year ago)

Impossible to weigh many of these against one another. Picked Hank because I thought "winner" as soon as I saw it.

Indexed, Monday, 28 August 2023 19:18 (one year ago)

Voted Rubber Soul. I always liked the U.S. edition, "I've Just Seen a Face" is a great opener.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 28 August 2023 19:20 (one year ago)

Yeah "I've Just Seen a Face" is really the difference maker for me, it just feels like it belongs on Rubber Soul rather than Revolver.

Keren Ann — Not Going Anywhere

I just randomly pulled this out to listen to last week, for the first time in years. I don't usually go for this kind of delicate, half-whispered delivery, but she pulls it off. I couldn't vote for it against this competition, but it's a nice album.

o. nate, Monday, 28 August 2023 20:58 (one year ago)

Yeah that's such a good album. Definitely a small thing compared to a lot on this list, but it's one I've never stopped playing ever since it came out. In certain moods, it's a go-to. The rest of her catalog I find mostly pleasant but kind of spotty. But that one just really works, great collection of songs and settings.

Switching thing up and voting for the best VU album

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Monday, 28 August 2023 21:28 (one year ago)

I used to think VU & Nico was the one for me, but as I get older I think I like listening to the 3rd s/t more

Dan S, Monday, 28 August 2023 21:39 (one year ago)

Same. An album that opens with "Candy Says" and ends with "After Hours" and what's in between lives up to those bookends. Plus of their self-consciously experimental stuff, I find "The Murder Mystery" the most beguiling.

Glad so many things got some love. Actually glad I didn't vote for either of the top two, because I like them as a duo. Both released in my birth year!
