I wanted to create a second poll that was a fairly honest assessment of what I listened to the most back during the formative years of early high school through college and all the way to Y2K. I went with one per artist, no repeats from last time, and only releases from that decade.

I went with NIN

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 25 August 2023 16:51 (one year ago)

if this was the first Orb album I would have had to vote for it, went with Check Your Head

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Friday, 25 August 2023 16:52 (one year ago)

you can take "check your head" out of my cold dead hands

between dr octagon, fsol, jamiroquai, portishead, roni size, dots and loops and tricky, this might be the strongest selection i've yet seen

the late great, Friday, 25 August 2023 16:58 (one year ago)

these are all albums i have a good memory of buying, listening to in specific places, etc...

so many of them were bought at the beginning of my trips to and from college. i'd buy 3 or 4 and listen to them over and over between New York and Chicago.

Ooh, about 27 albums I definitely listened to a lot on the '90s, including relative dustbin of history stuff like Echobelly and Chocolate Genius.

Check Your Head deserves a revival

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 25 August 2023 21:56 (one year ago)

I strongly considered Fear of a Black Planet, it's still one of the most futuristic albums I've ever heard, I wish there could be more music that sounds like it, but it has way too many lyrics that were questionable when it came out and haven't aged any better

I played Maxinquaye to death

It's Check Your Head or Ronin Size, but it's Check Your Head

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Friday, 25 August 2023 22:08 (one year ago)

I think the album I listened to the most intensely on this list, over the shortest period of time, was probably death certificate. I don't know that I'm ever going to listen to it again, too much of it has sentiments I can't abide. But it's just an amazingly produced album, it was sort of the cousin of/flipside to appetite for destruction in some ways. A depiction of this dangerous Los Angeles (except for the excursion to St Louis), and really an eye-opener for me as far as sound and content and the sheer force of personality and delivery and cinematic scope. I would personally never vote for it here, but I definitely had to include it out of honesty.

Son Volt are touring Trace currently. Saw them this weekend. Trace and a tribute to Doug Sahm.

Son Volt for about six months looked like the better bet compared to Wilco but in retrospect it makes sense that they never bettered Trace, A.M. was the looser album and showed a lot more possibilities for expansion and experimentation. Trace is vv conservative though it definitely imo was a perfect example of the alt-country sound of the time, better than anything else in Tupelo's wake in that respect.

it should be noted, it's an excellent cross-country driving album.

YLT

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 01:17 (one year ago)

Number of albums heard: 16

Favourite: blur ahead of Dummy

Least-favourite: House of GVSB - cool sound that they couldn't seem to figure how to use, though I liked "Wilmington"

Nicest surprise: The Orb

Unheard, but most want to hear: Supergrass

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 23:12 (one year ago)
