Forgive me for the lack of super specifics but I read a story wherein one of the guitar players for television (not Tom) saw jimi at a club in the 70s, complimented him and then jimi beat the utter tar out of him. Tv guitar dude was confused and sat around the bar moping, until it was time to leave. He walks out and Jimis in a car, tv guitarist goes over and J apologizes and cries. Turns out Jimi didn’t trust anyone who constantly adored him, who could blame him

this thing is pretty incredible, doesn't look like it's been mentioned on ILX yet? I was unfamilar with this late-period lineup

This guy's going to keep putting out records til he dies.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 20 December 2020 15:48 (four years ago)

I bought it. It's pretty good.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 20 December 2020 15:54 (four years ago)

I actually got onto Hendrix through the isle of wight show which everyone seems to hate, so I'm sure I will like this.

I guess I'm put off by the fact that some of the drums were overdubbed later, but it's not as if there weren't post-production fixes done to 80% of live albums at the time (and since).

tbh I didn't even notice cuz Jimi was shredding so hard

i dont think they have any more recordings. i think theyre just mining all the live stuff now.

And yet they still haven't done the one thing I most want: a single or double disc compilation of all the studio recordings with the Band of Gypsys.

I still want Black Gold

The overdubbed drums are disconcertingly impressive. I don't know if Mitch was hearing his original playing when he did the overdubs, but it's kind of incredible how he slots right in, and gives no indication whatsoever that he's not interacting with them in the moment. Other Hendrix drum overdubs aren't nearly as successful -- there's a couple posthumous ones where Mitch slightly speeds up and then pulls back, trying to match Jimi's tempo (and there's at least one by Knack drummer Bruce Gary which is embarrassing). But this is some kind of achievement. Also, the non-overdubbed drum tracks sound awful and barely present.

Will get, thanks yall. I enjoyed the movie, though I saw it while shrooming and toking at thee drive-in, also dug mostly studio "soundtrack"---didn't catch the songs while watching, but stand-outs incl."Dolly Dagger" and "Roomfull Of Mirrors )"I used to live in a room full of mirrors/All I could see was me I used to live in a room full of mirrors:
"All I could see was me/Then I'd take my (?) and smash my mirrors/Now the whole world is here for me to see/Now I'm searching for my love to be...A broken glass was loud in my brain," also a strong live "Hear My Train A-Comin'" and lovely, lyrical versions of "Star-Spangled Banner" and"Pali Gap," one of my favorite tracks by anybody ever.

one month passes...

The doc on the making of the film and the Maui shows is pretty funny and interesting but I still dont get why he played so few electric ladyland songs at this point in his career. Was it a thing where he didnt think even crosstwon traffic could be played live like the studio version or some other reason. Because in these later gigs, I'd much rather hear those songs than dolly dagger so much.

candyman, Wednesday, 20 January 2021 22:32 (four years ago)

I don't know the answer, but looking into his setlists, the only cuts from Electric Ladyland he ever played live with any frequency were Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Come On (Part 1), and All Along the Watchtower... and by 1970 had pretty much dropped Come On.

There's only one verified occasion when he ever played Crosstown Traffic live, which was at a gig in August 1968.

Josefa, Thursday, 21 January 2021 00:53 (four years ago)

It's the same situation with a lot of 60s acts, if you look at their setlists - they'd often prefer to play jams, loose covers, oldies, blues etc. rather than deep cuts from the albums. Even when the Who were playing the "complete" Tommy in 69 and 70, they dropped several tracks. There was the feeling that the show and the album were different experiences, and maybe were even for different audiences.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 21 January 2021 23:52 (four years ago)

Case in point, The Beatles, who went out on tour in August '66 and played nothing from Revolver - yet made sure to play Chuck Berry and Little Richard covers they'd probably been doing since their Hamburg days.
