Top 50 midnight corner store jams according to the customers

ok I know, another top 50, but this took me a minute to compile I promise

the premise: I spent most of the last couple years working graveyard at a convenience store, in the city, for reasons, and while I can't really recommend it on account of various traumas including being robbed at gunpoint twice and other such funny days at the office, I did get to meet all the people, all kinds, and I was able to blast any music I wanted in the store

so out of a ~300 song rotating shift long playlist, these are the ones that elicited the strongest response from the customers, maybe a spontaneous karaoke or dance routine or just a 'hey I like this song" I have a story for each of them

super stressful job but it was a lot of fun to make strangers listen to my favorite songs and see what stuck to the wall

The King Crimson jams stick out considerably from the rest. I voted Fallen Angel

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 07:39 (one year ago)

I’d love to know the reaction Leonard Nimoy or Television had.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 08:14 (one year ago)

hooked a regular that was a host/server for a couple fancy restaurants down the street with Bilbo Baggins and also Fallen Angel, would sing along while he shopped, great deep voice, we discussed putting a band together but that's a big ask

television's see no evil also was a big hit in general but was the favorite of one particular regular who was also the local mailperson, liked playing the lottery and somehow always seemed to come out ahead on his scratch-offs

playing Bilbo Baggins also led to several interesting wartime conversations as Nimoy

There was a version of Trouble coming every day that Scott Turkey Bones of the Wild DEogs fame recorded with Chris Walsh of the Moodists and a few others. Never heard it but wonder if it still exists anywhere. Heard Scltt talk about it at the time which I think was before I'd become familiar with the original.
Think I had managed to pick up a compilation for a very reasonable price. & then only picked up a copy of Freakout when decent vinyl bootleg versions appeared a couple of years later.

Trying to imagine walking into Superamerica for chips and a soda and hearing "Indoor Games." So that one.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 19:19 (one year ago)

i would be so psyched to enjoy the weird dreamlike energy of hearing Neon Golden at 3:45am in a convenience store, inspired choice

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 19:22 (one year ago)

Almost went with Dee-Lite, then Patsy Cline, but ended up voting for Prince - especially nice if you ever pick up a raspberry sorbet:

birdistheword, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 19:37 (one year ago)

Great concept for a list and many inspired choices, but I have to vote for Sade as I am getting married in 4 days, and By Your Side is the only one of these on the must-play list we gave our wedding DJ.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 19:45 (one year ago)

yea "Indoor Games" would be a very strange one to hear in public, curious what the reaction to that was

or something, Thursday, 31 August 2023 21:05 (one year ago)

Would be a late regular at this store. Voted Waitresses…

mmmm, Thursday, 31 August 2023 21:19 (one year ago)

I want to shop here. Can't decide.

Moniker? I barely know 'er! (SlimAndSlam), Thursday, 31 August 2023 22:28 (one year ago)

lol yeah I would love to run the ilx corner store, everyone could teleport in at odd hours of the night for snacks and a chat, we were born too early for that it seems but everyone could just relocate to Portland, Oregon

Indoor Games

this one breaks my heart a little bit because one customer in particular was clearly floored that this was playing, but it was early in the night and with a long line I just couldn't shoot the breeze about the weirdest crimson record as much as we both wanted to, whereas Fallen Angel led to a demand to hear Heat of the Moment and then a whole John Wetton power hour, but ~3am

By Your Side

congrats on the wedding methanie! hope it's a banner day, such a beautiful song, a cute, quiet couple came in while this was playing and one said to the other "this is that Sade song I was talking about" and serenaded them while they were shopping for chips

Florin Cuchares, Friday, 1 September 2023 00:08 (one year ago)

Love this poll - voting Suzie Q , though Hands to Yrslf a close second. My fave retail ‘programmed music over the speakers sing along whilst shopping’ was in an anchor store Men’s department browsing for some office dress wear, is most def crooning Buck Owen’s ‘Tiger By the Tail’ with a older gent sales associate.

Favorite Prince v. Favorite Television, but I feel like voting for something else.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Friday, 1 September 2023 01:12 (one year ago)

Raspberry Beret

we absolutely stocked a raspberry sorbet but sadly it was not as popular as Prince, cannot imagine the chaos had the two convened

Neon Golden

a regular walked in to this mid song and after clocking what it was, said to me "see this is why I fuck with you" which was a terrific treat in a desert of mostly indifference or bizarre aggression

Babooshka

lot of people wondering about what this Russian song was, always surprised to hear it is not Russian and is just Kate Bush, seems like a lot of Americans have never heard any Kate Bush until Running Up That Hill, thanks Netflix

Suzie Q

this is kind of a ringer, I wanted to find something for everyone but struggled with a certain contingent that I will not describe but anyway it worked great and is just a pretty good song to groove to while browsing the jerky

Florin Cuchares, Friday, 1 September 2023 03:22 (one year ago)

that seems dismissive so I should add that I love Susie Q and have played it live several times and it is ok for me to say this because I am half white and have also tried meth

Florin Cuchares, Friday, 1 September 2023 03:34 (one year ago)

Would totally sing along with Star Wars as Nick the Lounge Singer from SNL in a convenience store late at night.

BrianB, Friday, 1 September 2023 11:38 (one year ago)

voted Bilbo because a friend covers this song as part of his live set, and it's fun to shout "Bilbo!" call & response style when you've had a few and are still drinking which is kinda the ~vibe~ of midnight corner store customer imo

sarahell, Friday, 1 September 2023 17:21 (one year ago)

Ok this is contender for best poll of 2023

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 1 September 2023 17:23 (one year ago)

Fun poll! There are lots of great songs on here, but I voted for Steppin' Out as it was one of the first song I remember really loving as a little kid and I've never lost any love for it.

beard papa, Friday, 1 September 2023 18:05 (one year ago)

I voted Stepping Out as well. It has a suitable late night corner store vibe, and it would gladden my heart if I heard it at a late night corner store.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Groove is in the Heart

this is the only Deee-Lite (I forgot an e sorry) song I had heard prior to adding it to the rotation, and A LOT of people of a certain age (29-59?) responded so enthusiastically that I investigated further and now they are my favorite band, any live clip on youtube is just tremendous, so cool

this song also led to me learning that my former manager is closely related to the late NYC Queercore pioneer/icon Dean Johnson, who absolutely deserves a dedicated thread, there's been a documentary in the works but a thread on ilx at least good lord

Florin Cuchares, Saturday, 2 September 2023 09:00 (one year ago)

If I had found myself in this store, I would have been helpless to prevent myself playing air guitar, bass, drums, Mellotron, cornet etc, for all six minutes of "Fallen Angel".

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 2 September 2023 13:54 (one year ago)

whoops had no idea Dean Johnson totally has a thread will have to revive shortly thank you morbs

thanks everyone for voting (rock the vote!) did not earmark Steppin' Out to take this but it is kind of a perfect nighttime city song, always appreciated in store and very fun to see some customers hear it for the first time
