Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 11:46 (one year ago)

Gorguts - Obscura

The weirdest and most out there metal album (to my ears anyway)

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 12:07 (one year ago)

why would we entrust this list to someone who likes the worst oranssi pazuzu album best, honestly

imago, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 12:11 (one year ago)

Torn between Gorguts, Botch and Converge.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 12:28 (one year ago)

Winter, although it's difficult to choose one from a this list this solid.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 13:30 (one year ago)

list solid, spelling less so

mark s, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 13:33 (one year ago)

Aye, apologies to Siegbran for getting his pseudonym wrong!

ps Mark S on a metal thread! A poll of all things!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 13:45 (one year ago)

Corrupted have some fans whom you would never expect to be on ILM.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 13:46 (one year ago)

Voted Summoning, but could have gone for about a half dozen other options here.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 13:49 (one year ago)

stronghold def the album i've listened to most on this list but idk maybe i'll throw thergothon a vote

ivy., Tuesday, 29 August 2023 13:56 (one year ago)

I only realised the other day who Ivy is. Hi Ivy!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 13:59 (one year ago)

glad this list exists as i hate 90% of the metal i try out - seeing grief on here i know you've got good taste. i'm more familiar with "torso" but hey, grief is grief is grief

also big love for boris, of course

tremolo, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:03 (one year ago)

Can't pass up Bergtatt

Summoning are truly amazing but so far my listening has been concentrated on Minas Morgul for whatever reason.

jmm, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:11 (one year ago)

if you like Grief then you need to check out Corrupted, Noothgrush, Worship, Eyehategod for similar-ish vibes

xp

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:12 (one year ago)

Fuck, I feel like I could have made this list myself. Candidates: Aluk Todolo, Atheist, Botch, Celtic Frost, Coffins, Coroner, Corrupted, Cynic, Death, Electric Wizard, Entombed, Eyehategod, Fudge Tunnel, Godflesh, Isis, Negura Bunget...a lot of the other bands, you just chose the wrong album (Esoteric's earlier work is better, Jane Doe is not Converge's best record)...gonna need to think on this.

read-only (unperson), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:15 (one year ago)

this is a lot tougher than some of the other polls

many albums here I still play, some I've spent significant time with (Agalloch, Electric Wizard, Esoteric, Isis)

voted Harvey Milk

Brad C., Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:15 (one year ago)

I did deliberately choose non-obvious albums for some. I'm surprised that we have more in common re metal than previously thought.

xp

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:16 (one year ago)

teasing aside, will throw Darkspace a vote, that album is a galactic-scale hellvoid

imago, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:22 (one year ago)

i'll be sure to check those out! i'll start with eyehategod as i've had a couple friends who were fans.

recommendation exchange - ever heard hex by earth? that's a phenomenal album with a very distinctive vibe. not as crushingly distorted as something like grief, but still a very heavy album by a pair of OG doomers

tremolo, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:26 (one year ago)

Yes, I've seen earth several times since they came back in the mid 00s. Once with Sunn o))) (whom I've seen twice too).

I left off Earth 2 and any Sunn o))) because its ILM and mightve run away with it

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:38 (one year ago)

going with Cynic-Focus only because I'm going to see them play that album this week and I've been vibing w/ it a lot, but it coulda been several others on this list too. including the Entombed. frankly, other than Dismember, few ever matched the intensity of that record.

I can't turn a fart into a question (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:42 (one year ago)

I just can't get into that Death album no matter how hard I try. I don't hate it. I don't even dislike it. It's pleasant to my ears. but it's too "in the middle" sonically of what came before and what would come after for me to commit to.

I can't turn a fart into a question (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:43 (one year ago)

Went with monotheist, mainly b/c it’s continued to be so enjoyable with each listen through the years since release.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:51 (one year ago)

me reading this list was like a real life Vince McMahon meme, this is going to be a very hard choice

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:52 (one year ago)

I'm sort of torn, figuratively speaking, between Bathory, Bolt Thrower, and Disembowlement.
And Carcass. And old favorite Negura Bunget.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 14:54 (one year ago)

Because I journeyed backwards through their discography, not hearing the early stuff until I'd been listening to the later albums for years, pretty much all pre-Human Death is like that for me. "Yeah, that's fine, but when are we gonna get to the fireworks factory?"

read-only (unperson), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 15:24 (one year ago)

went with Transcendence Into the Peripheral but that weakling record could have been my choice in the right mood.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 15:42 (one year ago)

voted converge because i'm a basic bitch

lotta good stuff on here tho

also apparently i blew my speakers, whoops

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 15:49 (one year ago)

I haven't listened to Coffins in so long (and coincidentally enough it was Joan Crawford's mention of them in 2008 which got me to buy one of their albums). need to rectify that.

I can't turn a fart into a question (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 15:53 (one year ago)

I listened to them just the other day myself. They have a guitar tone that's uniquely pleasurable to me, like when the hot water in the shower hits the perfect spot on the back of your neck and you get goosebumps all over your body.

read-only (unperson), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 16:00 (one year ago)

good list, bunch of great possibilities but only one band I have a tattoo repping so I gotta vote Summoning.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 17:04 (one year ago)

Either Atheist or Thergothon. That Thergothon album has been my world for the past year.

brimstead, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 17:12 (one year ago)

spiritual healing seems kinda of like a “transitional” death album to me? things get more tech-y there

brimstead, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 17:13 (one year ago)

haha iow what Neanderthal said Re it being sonically “in the middle”

Sorry for 3 posts in a row

brimstead, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 17:14 (one year ago)

what's funny to me is that the band Gruesome was formed to be a Death tribute and their early stuff was supposed to be like SBG or Leprosy but all of it to my ears sounds like Spiritual Healing

I can't turn a fart into a question (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 17:15 (one year ago)

If the Bolt Thrower was Realm of Chaos that might have been my vote, as well as if the Godflesh was Streetcleaner. Went with Aluk Todolo though they really don't really register as metal at all to my ears.

atonar, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 17:40 (one year ago)

Wow. If my ears weren't so fucked, I'd spend the next month just listening to the stuff from here I don't know*. As it is, I'm somewhere between Bolt Thrower, Fudge Tunnel, Panopticon and The Angelic Process.

*Which is way more than I'm comfortable with. Even in my fully metal tape-trading and fanzine years, I now realise I wasn't ranging quite as widely as I thought.

(picnic, lightning) very very frightening (Chinaski), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 18:31 (one year ago)

Sorry to hear you have problems with hearing. Can you listen to music at home without headphones?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 19:36 (one year ago)

Ive heard 7 of these. Would have liked some Jute Gyte.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 19:45 (one year ago)

Cheers Toshiro. I can, but not at the immersive metal volume I'd like and certainly not on headphones. Blech.

I think I'll go with The Angelic Process. Monstrous record.

(picnic, lightning) very very frightening (Chinaski), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 20:03 (one year ago)

I doubt that one would be good for you on headphones!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 20:05 (one year ago)

Voting Entombed - Left Hand Path

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 05:48 (one year ago)

I dunno if im disappointed at not being called out for false metal in this poll or some 80s dinosaur bemoaning the non party vibe of post-80s metal.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 16:05 (one year ago)

I must give the Bathory album a listen. I love their first 2 especially their debut, raw af

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 17:46 (one year ago)

This is Bathory MKII

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 17:49 (one year ago)

That's where Quorthon is a viking

jmm, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 19:48 (one year ago)

― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, August 30, 2023 5:49 PM (two hours ago)

Did they give the Bathory a good scrubbing?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 19:50 (one year ago)

It has this epic masterpiece on it

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 20:16 (one year ago)

incredible music imo

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 20:48 (one year ago)

It really is. I know most prefer the album after or before, but this one is my fave.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 31 August 2023 12:54 (one year ago)

I still can't decide who to vote for.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 1 September 2023 20:18 (one year ago)

why would we entrust this list to someone who likes the worst oranssi pazuzu album best, honestly

Valonielu is also my favorite of the ones I’ve heard.

o. nate, Saturday, 2 September 2023 21:23 (one year ago)

Thank you!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 4 September 2023 11:00 (one year ago)

Out of those ones, Yob's The Unreal Never Lived has grown the most in stature (in my head) out of all of them.

Great choices,though!

A. Begrand, Monday, 4 September 2023 11:34 (one year ago)

Thanks. No idea who will win.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Sunday, 10 September 2023 17:11 (one year ago)

Electric Wizard seem like the most popular of these bands on ILM

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Sunday, 10 September 2023 19:36 (one year ago)

I gave Altar of Plagues a vote. Up Cork.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Sunday, 10 September 2023 19:37 (one year ago)

Never sure if its Electric Wizard are popular here or Dopethrone.
