Summoning are truly amazing but so far my listening has been concentrated on Minas Morgul for whatever reason.

if you like Grief then you need to check out Corrupted, Noothgrush, Worship, Eyehategod for similar-ish vibes

Candidates: Aluk Todolo, Atheist, Botch, Celtic Frost, Coffins, Coroner, Corrupted, Cynic, Death, Electric Wizard, Entombed, Eyehategod, Fudge Tunnel, Godflesh, Isis, Negura Bunget...a lot of the other bands, you just chose the wrong album (Esoteric's earlier work is better, Jane Doe is not Converge's best record)...gonna need to think on this.

this is a lot tougher than some of the other polls

recommendation exchange - ever heard hex by earth? that's a phenomenal album with a very distinctive vibe. not as crushingly distorted as something like grief, but still a very heavy album by a pair of OG doomers

Yes, I've seen earth several times since they came back in the mid 00s. Once with Sunn o))) (whom I've seen twice too).

I left off Earth 2 and any Sunn o))) because its ILM and mightve run away with it

going with Cynic-Focus only because I'm going to see them play that album this week and I've been vibing w/ it a lot, but it coulda been several others on this list too. including the Entombed. frankly, other than Dismember, few ever matched the intensity of that record.

I just can't get into that Death album no matter how hard I try. I don't hate it. I don't even dislike it. It's pleasant to my ears. but it's too "in the middle" sonically of what came before and what would come after for me to commit to.

Went with monotheist, mainly b/c it’s continued to be so enjoyable with each listen through the years since release.

I'm sort of torn, figuratively speaking, between Bathory, Bolt Thrower, and Disembowlement.
And Carcass. And old favorite Negura Bunget.

Because I journeyed backwards through their discography, not hearing the early stuff until I'd been listening to the later albums for years, pretty much all pre-Human Death is like that for me. "Yeah, that's fine, but when are we gonna get to the fireworks factory?"

went with Transcendence Into the Peripheral but that weakling record could have been my choice in the right mood.

I haven't listened to Coffins in so long (and coincidentally enough it was Joan Crawford's mention of them in 2008 which got me to buy one of their albums). need to rectify that.

I listened to them just the other day myself. They have a guitar tone that's uniquely pleasurable to me, like when the hot water in the shower hits the perfect spot on the back of your neck and you get goosebumps all over your body.

good list, bunch of great possibilities but only one band I have a tattoo repping so I gotta vote Summoning.

Either Atheist or Thergothon. That Thergothon album has been my world for the past year.

what's funny to me is that the band Gruesome was formed to be a Death tribute and their early stuff was supposed to be like SBG or Leprosy but all of it to my ears sounds like Spiritual Healing

If the Bolt Thrower was Realm of Chaos that might have been my vote, as well as if the Godflesh was Streetcleaner. Went with Aluk Todolo though they really don't really register as metal at all to my ears.

Wow. If my ears weren't so fucked, I'd spend the next month just listening to the stuff from here I don't know*. As it is, I'm somewhere between Bolt Thrower, Fudge Tunnel, Panopticon and The Angelic Process.

*Which is way more than I'm comfortable with. Even in my fully metal tape-trading and fanzine years, I now realise I wasn't ranging quite as widely as I thought.
