Fugazi/Eve 6/Limp Bizkit: A Beautiful Coincidence

I just wanted to share this interesting observation. Eve 6's "Inside Out" and Limp Bizkit's "Nookie" were both hits around the same period of time. Both showed the distinct influence of Fugazi, in particular "Waiting Room" (the background vocals and climax of "Nookie" and the riff to "Inside Out"). ALSO both songs contained the phrase "tender heart in a blender."

Mere coincidence?

Or Nazi plot?

Maybe the blender thing had to do with the nation's underlying fixation with smoothies.

Thanks Anthony, I hadn't realized yet that popular culture was organized and controlled by a consortium of high-ranking freemasons until JUST NOW.

Freemasons that all own 13 Songs, no less.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think some of them have the EP Seven Songs (not the far better 23 Skidoo album)? It seems unlikely, but they just might. . .

I'm sure the Eve 6 song predates Nookie by at least two years. I hope I'm wrong, because if not that indicates I remember SOMETHING about Eve 6, and that would never do.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

a little over a year between albums. Eve 6 came out in 98, Limp in 99. Still freaky.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm pretty sure the Durst line is a wink-and-nudge to the Eve6 hit, although i don't think either intentionally have anything to do with Waiting Room.

I KNEW nothing good would come of a musical world influenced by the MacKaye-Picciotto mindset!

i completely adore that eve 6 song

I do remember reading an interview with Fred Durst where he expressed a wish to cover 'Waiting Room', looks like he just ripped it off instead.

a re-run of the Scott Weiland/Girls against Boys debacle perhaps

Does the lead singer of Eve 6 still play in a Fountains of Wayne tribute band called Faucets of Wayne?

nine years pass...

Today I listened to the heart in a blender song and noticed that the drummer is really much better than necessary, and learned that he's the son of Don Was.

I think they did the thing where their management hires a new drummer for the first album.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 18:40 (four years ago)

"Better than necessary" suggests that you're way too used to hearing shitty drummers all the time

billstevejim, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 18:41 (four years ago)

That would totally make sense, gotta have a session ringer for that major label debut. I guess the surprising part is that he apparently toured & stuck around for a long time.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 18:42 (four years ago)

I mean, it was the '90s. A lot of those bands had great drummers, but you didn't necessarily have to be amazing to be in a decent alt rock band. The drum part could have been a lot more basic on that song but there's all this hi-hat shit that's cool but also doesn't call attention to itself.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 18:48 (four years ago)

Anyway songs don't have drummers anymore, drumming is just for impressing people on social media

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 18:50 (four years ago)

the drums on "inside out" are really great, i noticed that when i listened to it for the first time in forever too

Not to play captain save an Eve 6 here, but this was definitely not a case of solely bringing in the ringer for a major label debut:

While attending the University of Southern California at the age of 18, he auditioned for a band from La Crescenta, California called Eleventeen (eventually to become Eve 6) to replace their drummer. A fan at the time of the Fox TV show The X-Files, Fagenson and singer Max Collins were inspired to name the band Eve 6 after seeing the X-Files episode "Eve" while recording their first album. Tony played on and co-wrote the 4 Eve 6 albums released between 1998-2012

I just remembered something about how their drummer was someone different for a while and then they got a better drummer. Perhaps I'm also misremembering they were signed while still in high school. idk it's been a while since I saw that 120 Minutes episode and/or read the "20 under 20" issue of Request magazine from summer 1998 so I probably got some details mixed up.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 5 January 2021 19:54 (four years ago)

Then maybe it's the reverse, having Don Was as your dad can't hurt when trying to get signed.
