1970s Imaginary Jukebox poll

Here's yet another idea for the current poll craze. I've been modifying this periodically for a few years. I made an imaginary jukebox for a few decades that contain 50 "singles" of one artist, or two similar songs or artists; so 100 songs in total. They reflect a mix of my own taste and (American) biases, plus what an average cross-section of people might want to listen to if this was a real jukebox in a bar or something (only popular stuff I can't stand at all was ruled out). What's the best combination here? If anyone likes this idea I can go and update the 60s, 80s and 90s versions at some point.

Chris L, Friday, 1 September 2023 19:59 (one year ago)

I will always and ever vote for "Heart of Glass."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 1 September 2023 20:00 (one year ago)

The hardest song of all these to pair, I find, is "Whuthering Heights." I've never gotten it right.

Chris L, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:03 (one year ago)

Wuthering, even.

Chris L, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:03 (one year ago)

ANDREA TRUE CONNECTION – More More More/MACHINE – There But For the Grace of God Go I

idk if i should keep reading after this one

ivy., Friday, 1 September 2023 20:04 (one year ago)

Cool idea, but man this is impossible.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:07 (one year ago)

Dear god this is hard. Down to one of these three...

EARTH, WIND & FIRE – September/THE EMOTIONS – Best of My Love
DONNA SUMMER – I Feel Love/SYLVESTER – You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
BOBBY WOMACK – Across 110th Street/WILLIAM DeVAUGHN – Be Thankful for What You’ve Got

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Friday, 1 September 2023 20:08 (one year ago)

1. "September Gurls"/"Another Girl, Another Planet"
1. "Gloria"/"Marquee Moon"
2. "Le Freak"/"Good Times"

You've got quite a few where I love one but not the other.

clemenza, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:09 (one year ago)

Yeah, add Donna Summer/Sylvester as my #4.

clemenza, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:10 (one year ago)

That should be 1./2./3. (xpost)

clemenza, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:10 (one year ago)

Love this poll

nxd, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:18 (one year ago)

Here are a few bonus combos that didn't/couldn't make the cut:

CAN – Vitamin C
KRAFTWERK – The Model

THE CHI-LITES – Oh Girl
THE FIVE STAIRSTEPS – O-o-h Child

THE O’JAYS – Love Train
THE SPINNERS – I’ll Be Around

GANG OF FOUR – Damaged Goods
WIRE – Map Ref. 41°N 39°W

GLORIA GAYNOR – I Will Survive
THELMA HOUSTON – Don’t Leave Me This Way

MAX ROMEO – Chase the Devil
JUNIOR MURVIN – Police and Thieves

WILLI WILLIAMS - Armagideon Time
CULTURE – Two Sevens Clash

BOSTON – More Than a Feeling
AEROSMITH – Sweet Emotion

TODD RUNDGREN – I Saw the Light
CAROLE KING – It’s Too Late

ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA – Livin’ Thing
STEELY DAN – Deacon Blues

BROTHERS JOHNSON – Strawberry Letter 23
GEORGE McCRAE – Rock Your Baby

THE POP GROUP – She is Beyond Good and Evil
THE SLITS – I Heard It Through the Grapevine

Chris L, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:45 (one year ago)

My favourite there is definitely Todd Rundgren/Carole King.

clemenza, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:47 (one year ago)

Pistols/Spex because that would be fun in a bar.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Friday, 1 September 2023 20:48 (one year ago)

If it had been "I Love Music"/"I'll Be Around," that'd be much tougher...

clemenza, Friday, 1 September 2023 20:49 (one year ago)

congrats you have created a poll that is too hard

is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Friday, 1 September 2023 21:02 (one year ago)

I voted!

Snoopy is a cat, who lives in a cage (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 1 September 2023 21:36 (one year ago)

Roxy/Eno but there are some fabulous choices here.

atonar, Friday, 1 September 2023 21:51 (one year ago)

This was tough but went with the Clash because those songs (two of their best) were done specifically as singles while other favorites here had inferior single edits or were surpassed by versions elsewhere.

birdistheword, Saturday, 2 September 2023 07:14 (one year ago)

Fun thinking of combos. I’d pair William DeVaughn with Timmy Thomas “Why can’t we live together “ rather than Bobby Womack for example.

Other ones which came to mind

Elvis Costello “Oliver’s Army”/Dave Edmunds “Girls Talk”
Specials AKA “Gangsters”/Madness “One Step Beyond”
Althia and Donna “Uptown Top Ranking”/Janet Kay “Silly Games”
David Essex “Rock On”/Mott the Hoople “All the way from Memphis”

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 2 September 2023 07:30 (one year ago)

Joy Division - “Transmission “/ The Cure - “Boys Don’t Cry”

two really good feel-bad 1979 singles by bands who bring back memories

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GkVhgIeGJQ

Dan S, Saturday, 2 September 2023 23:19 (one year ago)

it’s either that or Patti Smith - “Gloria” / Television - “Marquee Moon”

Dan S, Saturday, 2 September 2023 23:20 (one year ago)

Big mistake here: the Creedence song should be Who’ll Stop the Rain, not Have You Ever Seen the Rain.

Chris L, Monday, 4 September 2023 04:07 (one year ago)

NM, I got confused for a minute and thought HYESTR was pre-1970, but it wasn’t, so the option stands. I know I had Who’ll Stop in that slot at some point though.

Creedence Crisis Averted.

Chris L, Monday, 4 September 2023 04:13 (one year ago)

Pretty much impossible. Went with Sly / Temptations.

that's not my post, Monday, 4 September 2023 21:17 (one year ago)

DONNA SUMMER – I Feel Love/SYLVESTER – You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)

this one feels a bit unfair on all the others tbh

or something, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 17:48 (one year ago)

And just a reminder, the 80s edition is now live as well.

Chris L, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 18:06 (one year ago)

I made both of these into Spotify playlists, so much great stuff on both of them:

nate woolls, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 21:43 (one year ago)

Cool; thanks!

Chris L, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 02:13 (one year ago)

I finally thought of a song I SHOULD have paired Wuthering Heights with: Bela Lugosi's Dead.

Chris L, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 23:45 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 7 September 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

A lot of good songs I don't have any particular desire to hear paired up. Roxy/Eno over Sly/Temptations.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 7 September 2023 16:47 (one year ago)

Pistols/Spex because that would be fun in a bar.

― The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Friday, 1 September 2023 21:48 (six days ago)

^^^ this, for the reason stated, just edging out Chic.

you gotta roll with the pączki to get to what's real (snoball), Thursday, 7 September 2023 17:39 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 8 September 2023 00:01 (one year ago)

Not surprisingly a thin spread. A lot of great singles.

birdistheword, Friday, 8 September 2023 02:53 (one year ago)

Oh this is another great poll I missed. Wouldn’t have known what to vote for tbh… some great pairings in here that make me go “yeah play that one!”… honestly not a single one in here I’d like to skip… do you have these on a spotify playlist?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 03:26 (one year ago)

Pink Floyd / Kate Bush is the only one that makes me raise my eyebrow. I love both songs but I don’t think that Kate Bush song would be an easy sell for casual PF fans. I’d probably pair it with something like idk Doors “riders on the storm” or Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “simple man” or something more obvious for classic rock fans.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 03:31 (one year ago)

You still have time to vote in the 80s and 90s editions which are up now. nate wools very helpfully made spotify playlists for 70s & 80s a few posts up. I used to keep my own versions but they got deleted along with my spotify a while back.

I fully concede that Floyd/Kate Bush doesn't work so well for the reason you cite. The only real connection is that David Gilmour discovered and fought for her early on. WH was the toughest song to pair w/ others I wanted to put on here. It wasn't until after I posted this that I finally thought of Bela Lugosi's Dead for their contrasting takes on goth subject matter.

I cast the vote for one of my personal favorites, Congos/Lee Scratch Perry. Two of his most spaced-out productions that I know.

Chris L, Friday, 8 September 2023 06:09 (one year ago)

one month passes...

Recording the following update for posterity:

KATE BUSH – Wuthering Heights
BAUHAUS – Bela Lugosi’s Dead

ELTON JOHN – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
PINK FLOYD – Wish You Were Here

Removing "I'm Not in Love" (sorry).

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 12:43 (one year ago)

Actually, one more: I would replace "Lost in Music" and make it "Love Hangover/He's the Greatest Dancer"

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 13:09 (one year ago)

Didn't see this earlier but ...

I’d pair William DeVaughn with Timmy Thomas “Why can’t we live together “

Pretty much this

insert nothing here (Eric H.), Monday, 9 October 2023 13:12 (one year ago)

Hypothetically, that would result in the following changes:

Move on Up/Across 110th Street
Superstition/That Lady

removing "Higher Ground."

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 13:25 (one year ago)

You know, I don't think I ever really gave "Why Can't We Live Together" its due beyond it being "the early drum machine song," because I didn't like it as much as George McRae Herbie Hancock or something. Now I think I blew it and should have considered it more. The second half of it is amazing.

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 14:40 (one year ago)

Although if I were to change things around I might still go with "Be Thankful.../Rock Your Baby."

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 14:42 (one year ago)

xp I'm sure I heard it plenty of times before, but it really was the haunting way it was used in the Jonestown documentary that made a permanent mark in my memory

insert nothing here (Eric H.), Monday, 9 October 2023 14:43 (one year ago)

So, possible one for an alternates list:

TIMMY THOMAS - Why Can't We Live Together
SHUGGIE OTIS - Aht Uh Mi Hed

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 15:13 (one year ago)

Nah, "Inspiration Information."

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 15:16 (one year ago)

(I may be in the minority here but I continue to prefer the Brothers Johnson's version of Strawberry Letter 23)

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 15:17 (one year ago)

three weeks pass...

I've been continuing to tweak this list at odd moments when I'm looking to distract myself and made the following updates:

I was never thought the Stayin Alive/Heart of Glass combo worked so I switched a couple:

BEE GEES – Stayin’ Alive
ANDREA TRUE CONNECTION – More More More

BLONDIE – Heart of Glass
MACHINE – There But For the Grace of God Go I

A few more:

BOB DYLAN – Tangled Up in Blue
JONI MITCHELL – Coyote (replaced A Case of You)

THE FIVE STAIRSTEPS – O-o-h Child
SPINNERS – I’ll Be Around
(NEW)

WILLIAM DeVAUGHN – Be Thankful for What You’ve Got
TIMMY THOMAS – Why Can’t We Live Together
(as suggested)

CURTIS MAYFIELD – Move On Up
BOBBY WOMACK – Across 110th Street

STEVIE WONDER – Superstition
THE ISLEY BROTHERS – That Lady (Pts 1 & 2)

REMOVED:
Staple Singers & Charles Wright. They would now be the following alternates:

THE STAPLE SINGERS – I’ll Take You There
KING FLOYD – Groove Me

CHARLES WRIGHT & THE WATTS 103RD STREET RHYTHM BAND – Express Yourself
KOOL & THE GANG – Hollywood Swinging

Chris L, Monday, 30 October 2023 20:11 (one year ago)

Actually, make that Express Yourself/Jungle Boogie

Chris L, Monday, 30 October 2023 20:16 (one year ago)
