Best "pieced together" posthumous release by bandmates, friends, family of deceased musicians

Following my reading over the weekend how Mark Linkous's brother Matt and sister-in-law Melissa have pieced together songs he left behind to release one last Sparklehorse album, I was wondering what people think is the best such release?

Now, I am not saying necessarily that any of these various records from left-behind stuff are actually great, but some are more undoubtably less egregious than others. Your thoughts?

I've just got hold of one of the two "new" Viv Stanshall albums, will report back.

Some would say the recent Jamie Branch album

The Astronauts' posthumous album last month was brilliant.

The Game Theory one a few years ago seemed...a bit lacking.

No disrespect to Miller's family and friends, but I haven't listened to Supercalifragile and might never do so.

I think Sketches for "My Sweetheart the Drunk" was sabotaged in a way by trying to be too many things. It should have just included one version of the Verlaine recordings (so no multiple mixes, which weakened the statement), and left the home demos and radio recordings for another release. Instead of being a definitive release, it seemed like a junk box where Buckley's mother tossed all the leftovers.

new moon by elliott smith - all demos that were left off his second and third albums. there's some absolutely astonishing songs on there. how "big decision", "georgia, georgia" and "whatever (folk song in c)" didn't make the cut i'll never know

also, i may be wrong but i was under the impression that bird machine is less of a collection of unfinished stuff and more an album that was already mostly finished when mark died - i may be wrong though!

George Harrison’s Brainwashed is pretty great. I recall Dhani Harrison saying he felt that one track was a bit ropey-sounding and that they weren’t able to get it up to scratch, but I’ve never been able to tell which one he means. Pretty consistent, then.

Any thoughts on Leonard Cohen's Thanks for the Dance? I've never dared to approach it.

Chris Bell - I Am the Cosmos. Was this intended as an album or more like a collection of demos?

Coltrane to thread

Cosmic Music (two tracks by JC and two by AC's newly formed group) and Infinity (leftover JC tracks with string arrangements added by Alice) are both brilliant records that belong in any Coltrane collection.

Agree about Brainwashed, that's one that immediately came to mind.

still holding out for LSD obv, iykyk

God I really hope we get LSD. Ideally with vocalists who previously sang on Cardiacs material filling in for Tim - Sarah, William D Drake, Jo Spratley, Mark Cawthra even.

Does Nick Drake's "Family Tree" count? I think that one is great.

Good Things by Epic Soundtracks was pieced together by his brother Nikki Sudden, from demos made by Epic and Kevin Junior, and it's as good as anything else Epic recorded in his short career as a solo artist.

Arthur Russell in particular has had sort of a career’s-worth of these

You could say the same about Patrick Cowley

Zappa's Läther, though it's cheating a bit. It was a decade or two before any of his posthumous albums were pieced together by anyone but him.
