(aaah...) Oh since the day I saw you,
(higher aaah...) I have been waiting for you,
(Phil's masterstroke: lower aaah...) You know I will adore you,
To eternity...

So everyone knows everyone loves this, but does everyone love it for the same reasons? Specifically, to me that second verse is where it passes from mere classic to masterpiece - can you single out a particular part of the song that way?

I will note that the lines about how she'll make you proud of her and that "we'll make them turn their heads every where we go" can be a little alienating. The first is a bit subservient and the second kinda exhibitionist. Great song nonetheless. I may kinda prefer "She's Real" the Built To Spill version (I haven't heard the original), that utilizes "Be My Baby" to great effect. Great example of a non-sample sample of a song.

c'mon be my baby tonight... c'mon be my baby tonight... i've seen the way you've treated other thugs you've been with... c'mon be my baby tonight

I like the first few lines of the second verse the most: "I'll make you so happy, baby, just wait and see..."

It has that Spectorian mystique, I guess.

The drums the drums the drums. The intro is one of the signature riffs of rock n roll - instantly recognizeable, endlessly copied/borrowed, beautifully executed, when the rest of the band swoops in on the downbeat just after the drum break ahhhhhhhhhhh.... genius.

can you single out a particular part of the song

"a-wah-ho-a-wo-ho-ho"

You really can't single out any one part of it as greater than the rest, and that's why it's great. I like the way everything in the background - voices, strings, instruments - just kind of melts together. That's probably what they meant by the Wall of Sound but it always makes me think of an impressionist painting, somehow.

I love it because it's one of the first songs I remember being in love with. I was obsessed with the Dirty Dancing soundtrack as a child.

That my alltime favourite Spector/girl-group thing was sung by the most gorgeous woman in the history of pop is a coincidence, since I loved the song years before I ever saw any photographs of (hubba hubba!) Veronica Spector. Many things to love - the drums, the whoa-ho-ho-ho, etc. But if I gotta single out something, I'll go with Ronnie's accent: The way she'll make them TOIN their heads every place we go. Dunno if that's what Spanish Harlem sounds like - my Canadian ears have trouble diffentiating all those variegated New Yawk accents - but it's adorable, as is her slighly lispy pronunciation of "so".

Five best things about "Be My Baby."

5. The line "for every kiss you give me, I'll give you three."
4. The passion behind Ronnie's voice when she goes "Whoa-oh-oh-oh!
3. Ronnie Spector doing harmonies for. . . Ronnie Spector.
2. The opening drums. Every song should open like that.
1. That when I played it for a girl who wasn't familiar with it, she said that she was glad to hear that it was my favorite song.

"OH SINCE THE DAY I SAW YOU/I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU..."

That's it right there. But the opening gives me goosebumps too.
