we're really miserable and drained yeah
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 14:40 (one year ago)
yeah I hate this, it seems like they're going for some kind of alienation or anomie. Taylor Swift's Folklore is a good example. They even come up in lowercase when you insert the CD in the computer. I always change it to title case before ripping it to my phone
― lord of the rongs (anagram), Wednesday, 20 September 2023 14:50 (one year ago)
it's really bad say the lowercase username guys
― NickB, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 14:52 (one year ago)
i (I?) am but a person, a Track is much more than I (i)
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 14:56 (one year ago)
some say that lowercase is totally aesthetic
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 14:57 (one year ago)
tbf the new Tirzah album jumbles lowercase track titles with uppercase ones, which works pretty well imo
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 14:59 (one year ago)
the final track of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway just being called "it" is pretty cool
― frogbs, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:00 (one year ago)
better than all uppercase imo
― jaymc, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:01 (one year ago)
lol NickB
the new Jaimie Branch (excuse me, jaimie branch) album does this
― out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:02 (one year ago)
lowercase could just be a way to de-emphasise the words, words that are sometimes just arbitrary labels. it's the track that's the important thing and maybe what you call it is of no consequence at all. I don't even know what half the songs I like are even called these days
― NickB, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:03 (one year ago)
When the cure do it on faith, yes. Sometimes, though, it's an expression of humility - "no upper case here, please take these modest songs, presented without fuss", like on partyfinger's uggie chile. Not sure where mogwai and nine horses fit on this continuum.
But it is "it" in italics, pretension gone mad!
― Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:05 (one year ago)
I'm fond on "sentence titles", where only the first letter is capitalized. "Ja, sie sollen Gottes Kinder heißen. Agnus dei, agnus dei"
― Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:08 (one year ago)
Of course in German you capitalize nouns as well.
Another example of "modest lower-case" - the shelleydevoto album.
― Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:10 (one year ago)
maybe lowercase titles have just turned up to the track-naming thing in their regular everyday shorts and t-shirt and imago is like "c'mon guys, understand that getting a songtitle fucking means something, meet the moment!"
― NickB, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:11 (one year ago)
lol
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:13 (one year ago)
NickB definitely onto me tho yeah; having survived the new slowdive AND the new olivia rodrigo, running into bar italia as well was too much. it's okay when a few artists do it here and there (it was a great choice on charli xcx's 'how i'm feeling now', the definitive covid album), but it's definitely more of a Thing now maybe?
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:15 (one year ago)
that said bar italia also mix it up like Tirzah so now idk
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:17 (one year ago)
I'm all for more variation with case, all uppercase, all lowercase, camelcase, random uppercase letters within words, it's all good, I will take 2 or 3 seconds to ascribe some meaning to the case-choice and then forget
― silverfish, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:18 (one year ago)
death to the cursed shift key. lowercase best case1
― is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:19 (one year ago)
I ... really haven't taken at all to the random typesetting of so much music (tracks, albums, artists) these days - lowercase, or all in uppercase or c o n s t a n t s p a c e s whatever. Or maybe it's more the way that RYM slavishly adheres to all these quirks and it looks damn ugly. I'm just Wikipedia-minded!
But yes, says me with the lowercase username I created about eight years ago (but mum that's different).
I'm not even totally keen on using 'nick nicely' though I think he was prescient in bringing the cummings thing to pop.

btw you're welcome to go off in the bar italia thread if you want imago, I know not everyone likes their thing being shit on, but i dont care, i think it can be a healthy thing and maybe a bit of negativity might help me get my thoughts in order, kind of like having a vaccine
― NickB, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:23 (one year ago)
The counterbalance: MC has a brief but compelling approval on lowercase titles in para two of his review of janet. (another early? example) https://nobilliards.blogspot.com/2021/02/janet-jackson-janet.html
― you can see me from westbury white horse, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:27 (one year ago)
i don't want to do my boring thing at bar italia haha, their urban miserablism is not rly to my taste (with the odd moment of greater gleam) but there was a moment earlier when i was listening to it while walking home from the supermarket in heavy rain with no coat or umbrella where it made sense lol
― imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:28 (one year ago)
oh there's a bar italia thread?like that album, reminded me of the double Virgo record from last year
― nxd, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 15:30 (one year ago)
Agreed; they're both annoying but "this" is slightly less annoying than "THIS" if only because it requires just a little less retyping in iTunes. I'm a busy guy.

I feel like lots of pop album covers are 'in lowercase' too these days - no text except, where applicable, a Parental Advisory sticker. And I know it's because they're almost always accompanied by info on e.g. Spotify to cover those bases but (and this doesn't usually go down well when I say it but) I dislike it. The amount of sleeves (almost always portraits) that I think look only semi-completed... Especially if they're the sort of photos that would line a magazine feature. I'll put it down to overexposure maybe.

This is going to be an incredibly unpopular opinion but lower case is more aesthetically pleasing to me than a title like "I Would Die 4 U"
― Indexed, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 16:23 (one year ago)
what about using + instead of "and"
― budo jeru, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 16:56 (one year ago)
i see a lot of music and it looks like this
b e s h f u u l /// + uno x burty gun (ft. peee P A Y ((
― budo jeru, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 16:58 (one year ago)
& vs x vs + vs /
(currently trying to finalize an album with one of the above in artist name, and possibly lower case track titles so this is very relevant to my interests)
