hate mail you've received for reviews you've written

more like 'funny' hate mail you've received, not really horrible toxic hate mail (cos I don't want anybody to have to relive that), more like 90s "U R DUM" hate mail.

I haven't gotten any in years as I don't write publicly anymore. Years ago, a Nile fan wrote me and told me I was equal to a "dog that lacked potty training" when I gave them a "good but not great" review on an album. a colleague got called a "doughnut pumper" for a review they wrote.

and not hate mail but there was one death metal band who apologized for making bad music after I gave them a relatively negative review.

what were the wildest ones you got?

way back when i wrote a review re a commerically available mixtape by wrongtom.
due to its lack of sonic fidelity i accused him of using skinny 128 mp3s for the mix.
out of the blue he contacted me and bollocked me assuring it had all been constructed out of legit 7" singles.
needless to say i posted a retraction and we are now well connected via the usual channels.

then there was the time i slagged off go home productions major label album, mashed.
after i posted my review, i got an email from his PR crew who were seriously not happy.
fast forward many years, and GHP posted a blog about how much he hated how the album turned out due to major label restrictions.

I reviewed the Stones live once. They were fine but not great this night, and I probably wrote something to that extent. I got a total fan logic response from someone that was basically "if they were so mediocre, then why have I seen them 50 times on this tour?" I dunno, dude.

not hate mail but the only thing I can think of is I received comment via a colleague that his friend disagreed with me mentioning Sunn O))) in my review of the New Age Doom/Lee Perry album (I wasn't comparing them musically, just that the dynamic of the team-up was quite redolent of Sunn working with Cope or Scott).

I got a pissy email from Dmitri Coats of Burning Brides in 2007:

What's up Unperson? Thanks so much for the review in AP - a once decent magazine that now puts bands like 'Cute Is What We Aim For' on the cover. Glad you think I'm crying out for an ass-kicking. Looking forward to meeting you and letting you know what i think of your writing. -Dimitri

The review in question:

BURNING BRIDES
Hang Love (Modart)
Dimitri Coats is a total douche. He says things like, "If I died tomorrow, which I hope I don't, at least I know I have made what I feel is a great record. The kind of rock record you don't hear anymore. So I am free," with a straight face. Unfortunately, he's impossible to fully disdain, because while there's not much sonic originality on Burning Brides' third disc (ooh, a grungy power trio - how groundbreaking!), it's actually not the worst record I've heard this week. He's a decent guitarist; his wife Melanie's basslines support him adequately; and drummer Paul Beeman is the secret weapon, vying with the Melvins' god of thunder Dale Crover for heavy-footed rawk supremacy. Some tracks ("She Comes To Me") are a little too mid-'90s, but it's hard to deny the raw, skull-stomping power of the opening "Ring Around The Rosary," no matter how much Coats may be crying out for an ass-kicking.

I was only able to bring this up because I posted the review and the email on a long-defunct but still-extant blog.

I met Coats in person three or four years later, interviewing OFF! at SXSW, but he didn't remember me and was polite and friendly.
