still the best indie rock album i've heard all year - inventive, detailed, fun, full of great processed guitar sounds and interesting compositions. not that it's retro at all but kind of a classic matador band in a way - i might be alone in this but i really do hear echoes stuff like TFUL 282 in their sound: off-kilter rhythms, unexpected noise interruptions, occassional excursions into a kind of clanking junkshop folk music. and i'm bummed that didn't check out their earlier records sooner cos the two previous albums are great too. any other takers?

love the live performances here - interesting to see how they actually do their thing, didn't realise it was quite so guitar-based:

NickB, Friday, 22 September 2023 21:13 (two years ago)

ach, you'll need to rewind that back to the start

NickB, Friday, 22 September 2023 21:14 (two years ago)

Absolutely one of my faves of the year!
As adept at nervy ADHD switcheroos as they are at lovely textured art pop, that recent album is a real good time.

Anybody seen them live?

mr.raffles, Friday, 22 September 2023 21:17 (two years ago)

an earlier song where there's an obvious animal collective influence, but without any of the stuff that made that band kind of annoying:

imago, Friday, 22 August 2025 13:09 (three months ago)

yeah enjoying this one a lot. bit of a back-handed compliment but it's making me think of a less annoying Dirty Projectors

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Friday, 22 August 2025 16:43 (three months ago)

track i'm stuck on right now is 'nights in armor', the guitars on that are everything

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Friday, 22 August 2025 17:00 (three months ago)

“less annoying Dirty Projectors” OTM. bits of Deerhoof in there too

new one sounding terrific so far

donna rouge, Saturday, 23 August 2025 21:47 (three months ago)

I didn’t think it was possible for me to still be surprised by a rock band making a house anthem, but wow @ “Playing Classics” - love how the central piano riff is simultaneously both exactly the sort of discordant stumbling affair you might expect from Water From Your Eyes and spiritually Marshall Jefferson.

Tim F, Monday, 25 August 2025 04:21 (three months ago)

can i play this for my pre-teen kids?

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Monday, 25 August 2025 04:47 (three months ago)

that piano bit in "playing classics" sounds like it's from stewart copeland's spyro the dragon soundtrack

ufo, Monday, 25 August 2025 04:48 (three months ago)

They don't really sound like Dirty Projectors, but I kinda like the comparison anyway. Because they do sound like what indie used to sound like fifteen years ago, except that they refuse to be abrasive/irritating. I took a deep dive into This Is Lorelais bandcamp, and he has recorded dozens and dozens of bedroom indie pop, and if he wanted to, he could have easily tried to be the next Ariel Pink, but there's nothing like that. It's personal and not really streamlined, but it's not trying to be annoying to seem profound.

Frederik B, Monday, 25 August 2025 13:57 (three months ago)

nate is a weirdly great dance producer. "dancing in the club" from the last this is lorelei album is obviously a classic. i saw them recently and they play some of his dancier songs towards the end of the set and they really pop

"mouth man" from the 2022 album in particular is an incredible live arrangement. the recorded version is cool but the live version really rips, this video below is a great recording. it's sorta like if you pushed a song by the rapture down the stairs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0N22xv55l8

"bring back my dog" from a 2022 EP is also great, more of a hyperpop type production but retaining the core elements of his songwriting

i haven't listened to this new album yet but 'box for buddy' is one of my favorite records from the last few years and they're one of my fav live bands right now. when he opens for MJ lenderman there is no drop off, imo

this is a dancier song from wayyy back (2019) which builds into something really lovely and euphoric imo...

Really glad to see WFYE and This is Lorelei getting some recognition on this board. "I'm All Fucked Up", "When You're Around" and "Two Legs" are straight up classics.

bookmarkflaglink (Darin), Monday, 25 August 2025 23:55 (three months ago)

This is Lorelei seems to be a little sandbox for genre exercises and WFYE is where Nate really goes into crazy experimental supergenius mode, which is the right way around imo. Two Legs for example is a lovely (and uncanny) Elliott Smith impersonation, but it IS an impersonation

imago, Tuesday, 26 August 2025 11:56 (three months ago)

when he opens for MJ lenderman there is no drop off, imo

funny that he's opening for lenderman. they should call it the "side projects but not really" tour

tbf I'm very good mates with my ex but if she was dating MJ Lenderman I'd only open for him if I was damn sure I'd be blowing him off the stage lol

yeah don't try to blow him onstage you'll get arrested

Approached this band somewhat skeptically but was won over big time by "Born 2." Combined with the live clip of This Is Lorelei's "Mouth Man" posted itt, I am now a fan

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 28 August 2025 12:41 (three months ago)

feel like i have about 17 different favourite tracks on this album

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Thursday, 28 August 2025 13:52 (three months ago)

really liked the last album and just heard Nick play a song off the new one on the radio which I also liked a lot :)

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 28 August 2025 20:23 (three months ago)

Aww! They're playing in London in November - come along!

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Friday, 29 August 2025 08:00 (three months ago)

Every time it gets to the (amazing) chorus of "Born 2" I find myself wanting to sing the chorus of "Head Over Heels" along with it for some reason

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 29 August 2025 22:34 (three months ago)

I heard a couple songs from the last WFYE album and they didn't do much of anything for me, but this new one is fantastic.

Actually I have to dampen that a little, the first half is fantastic, but the second half kind of peters out imo.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 11 September 2025 19:09 (three months ago)

Yeah, now that I've listened a few times, I kinda agree with this. But that first half, whoa

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 11 September 2025 20:21 (three months ago)

Yeah, that first half really is stellar though.

one month passes...

They were great tonight in Copenhagen. Played at Ideal Bar at Vega, small place for 200 people, sold out, insanely warm and damp towards the end, after we'd all been hopping and swaying for a small hour (no space for dancing). They were really groovy, lots of bass and drums and then tons of noise on top. "Quotations" might have been the best one, weird 5/4 rhythm, and then it builds for seven minutes into the biggest crescendo of the night. And in-between the numbers weird noisy interludes while Rachel talked about eating different kinds of Danish food, then silence for a second, then another awesome groove. They are really something.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 22:03 (two weeks ago)

Almost wished they had a brass section with them, some of it reminded me of all the New York noise from The Contortions and ESG to The Rapture. Except more 7/4 or 5/4.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 22:04 (two weeks ago)

They were great at the Village Underground but they had the worst support act I’ve ever seen. It was some guy who was cosplaying as a creepy metal guy, shining a torch in his own eyes like he’d watched Bo Burnham’s Inside too much. Tuneless overly loud shite that didn’t match at all and nearly ruined my night and more importantly my hearing. Metal has a time and a place I guess, but that was not it. People were checking their watches and their phones, yawning or giggling at his theatrics.

No matter, I had a great time. It felt like WFYE were as cool as they were good, and they were really good.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 08:12 (two weeks ago)

Haha, it was a much better choice last night: Silver Gore, an indiepop duo with a dog-themed first ep out. The whole project is not at all finished, loads of layers of playback and only eight songs, but they were fun, catchy, set a good mood for the night.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 12:49 (two weeks ago)

It hadn’t occurred to me that “Playing Classics” could do with improving, but “Driving Classics, Playing Cars” sounds like the opening salvo in a long and bloody campaign to win ILM’s 2025 tracks poll.

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Saturday, 6 December 2025 10:19 (five days ago)

and yes they are great live! i think that the ilxor i went with wasn't so keen on rachel's somewhat whimsical on-stage demeanour but i loved every minute

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Saturday, 6 December 2025 10:24 (five days ago)

yeah the last few minutes of that are glorious. i do think the tempo makes it sound a lot crazier and weird than it is and pitching it down a bit definitely opens up the groove of it for me, but maybe that's just me being an old

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Saturday, 6 December 2025 10:44 (five days ago)
