wax, dig, sponge, tar, tad....????

it was suede probably. but you will say blur. or maybe you will say ride. you always were a little daring.

but when all is said and done: it was Come. it was always Come.

“Live Through This” is my fave 90s album, period

But fave 90s one-syllable band? Jeez. Prob have to agree with Low when you consider everything about everything

(the poster formerly known as Twitter) (flamboyant goon tie included), Saturday, 23 September 2023 20:11 (two years ago)

For a sec I thought there was a band called Jeez.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Saturday, 23 September 2023 20:12 (two years ago)

Who was the first ever one syllable band anyway? Yes? Man? Free?

NickB, Saturday, 23 September 2023 20:52 (two years ago)

Or Can maybe?

NickB, Saturday, 23 September 2023 20:53 (two years ago)

Love perhaps

Josefa, Saturday, 23 September 2023 20:54 (two years ago)

gotta be one earlier than 68 though surely?

Xp oh good one!

NickB, Saturday, 23 September 2023 20:55 (two years ago)

what is the criteria though? a few options present themselves: 1) best band qua name, 2) best band qua band, or what I think the thread is getting at: 3)best integration of band and name, which is a tie between low, come, and pulp

1 ) would be tad and 2) pole

I had an old issue of the NME from 1991 that I bought second hand while at university, and it had a very negative review of the Rain Tree Crow album, basically decrying them as a bunch of past it old new romantic has beens, but it also claimed that coincidently there were three up and coming young baggy groups active at the time called Rain, Tree and Crow respectively, all of whom were making music that was more vital and fresh than Sylvian/Karn et al, I think this was just a journalistic flourish, but does anyone know if these bands really existed?

soref, Sunday, 24 September 2023 18:46 (two years ago)

Rain existed, dunno about the other 2

listening to some Rain on youtube, and I do not personally think this is more vital than Rain Tree Crow, in fact it's pretty bad, but - is there a case to be made that Rain were the earliest example of a a mix between The Stone Roses and Primal Scream with the swagger of Oasis band?

Yeah, I guess you're correct. I always thought they'd changed it.

in mid-nineties San Diego, we had:

  • inch
  • rust
  • fluf
and, one of the first local bands I ever saw live, a trio of pop-punk teenagers from Rancho Bernardo High School who would later add a hyphen and a certain few digits to their band name, allegedly in response to threat of litigation from an irish techno group who claimed to have established the name first: blink

also, not from San Diego, but would like to add for the record one KARP

in the 90s in the midst of all this, we'd joke that there was a band called Chair. Discogs would suggest it's still unclaimed!

Terrycoth Baphomet (bendy), Monday, 25 September 2023 13:23 (two years ago)

In the 80's I used to muse that House would be about the most generic name for a band. (This was before the dance music genre was really a thing.) Of course, by the end of the decade there was a band called A House.

henry s, Monday, 25 September 2023 13:33 (two years ago)

Unfortunately two syllables rather than one, but Warren Fischer of Fischerspooner fame started out in a noise-rock band called Table. But fear not, there was another noise-rock band called Bench.

a man banging his head against several walls at once (Matt #2), Monday, 25 September 2023 13:44 (two years ago)

Is Mule considered two syllables? I guess it depends on where you're from.

Just remembered my town had a band called Cram when I was a kid, I think my sister went to school with one of them? Anyway, can't believe there's video of everyone hanging out at one of their shows. I could watch this kind of thing forever. Whatever happened to flipping off the camera?
