Autumn playlist perennial favorites

Obviously my idea of a fall playlist leans more to the acoustic/Mr. Autumn Man side of things (I mostly think of goth/Halloween as a separate thing). This is just a collection of songs that sound particularly good this time of year.

some really great choices here. it's making me eager to make my own mix soon!

voted "Autumn in New York" for the song more than Billie's performance, which is great anyway.

your inclusion of "Wot's... Uh the Deal?" has made me feel more seen than maybe i have ever felt on this website. there's something deeply autumnal about that whole record, and in my brain it's forever intermixed with feelings of sadness and angst at dwindling daylight and my nascent pubescence while still being able to find some comfort in mom's split pea soup on a dreary october day.

Terry Callier, Françoise Hardy, and Jessica Pratt are great choices too.

try Roy Hargrove or Sarah Vaughan doing "September in the Rain" if you're looking to add one more :)

i went for autumn almanac, not only my fav song about autumn but probably my favourite song of the sixties. covers so much ground in 3 minutes. the part when ray sings "this is my street and i'm never gonna leave it" is so beautiful it makes me wanna cry

Thanks, budo jeru. It’s funny, I almost went for “A Pillow of Winds” or “Fearless” instead of “Wot’s… Uh the Deal,” but Meddle kinda doubles as a spring album for me.

yeah great list! I'm pretty sure every song I recognize I also like

I haven't heard Autumn Almanac in years. What a strange little song. They packed a lot into it, eh?

Hella good playlist but I’m sorry I can’t vote for anything but ripple. A song that chokes me up every damn time.

Contenders: Sibylle, Fahey, Dylan, The Band, Mac (that hour long loop of albatross that’s on YouTube is a perennial fave.) great vibey list

Great list and interestingly some of my favorite fall artists. I'm torn between Pretty Saro, Albatross, and Autumn Leaves. Nothing says rainy night to me like Miles' muted trumpet.

List does need some Pentangle, maybe The Snows, but that's probably better for the first track of the next playlist (late-Fall/Winter is Coming).

Is it wrong to vote for "It's Raining Today" despite not actually thinking of it as an autumnal song?

I really love that Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore record as well, but all Meg Baird's music falls into a sort of permanent summer twilight for me

I like at least 15 of these selections, so "evocation of autumn" will be a major deciding factor in voting as I listen.

your inclusion of "Wot's... Uh the Deal?" has made me feel more seen

It's the one song here that was also on an autumn mix CD I made more than 10 years ago, along with different Kinks, Beach Boys and Nick Drake songs.

That's funny, the setting strikes me as late March for no particular reason - the first rain after the snow has nearly melted. It depends how long you think it's been since "once there was summer and you".

I must be a sucker for extra-musical cues, too, because (due to its cover) the songs from Hejira sound like winter to me (and "the snow gathers like bolts of lace", "white flags of winter chimneys", etc.). Fahey will always make me think of the fall after driving through the countryside in a sudden thick fog one Thanksgiving weekend while listening to Return of the Repressed, but "Sligo River Blues" is not a particular favourite.

OK, having listened to my favourites, impressed by the atmosphere of this mix, I'll vote for "Whispering Pines".

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 28 September 2023 16:01 (two years ago)

Honestly I think I added "It's Raining Today" because it had been raining for like 3 fucking days lol

Chris L, Thursday, 28 September 2023 16:23 (two years ago)

Hey or Here Before for me... Both haunting, beautiful songs that cut right to my core

octobeard, Thursday, 28 September 2023 16:44 (two years ago)

I've taken so many meaningful walks listening to "Hey" the past two years.

Chris L, Thursday, 28 September 2023 17:01 (two years ago)

The other song here I have to admit is anachronistic is "Our Way to Fall," which is more of a late summer night song. I thought putting "Autumn Sweater" here would be too obvious but I should have went with "Damage" or "I'll Be Around" or something.
