1950s Imaginary Jukebox poll

I had to do one more when I realized I was leaving the actual jukebox era plus a lot of great songs on the table. The usual preamble: I made an imaginary jukebox for a few decades that contain 50 "singles" of one artist, or two similar songs or artists; so 100 songs in total. They reflect a mix of my own taste and (American) biases, plus what an average cross-section of people might want to listen to if this was a real jukebox in a bar or something (only popular stuff I can't stand at all was ruled out).

This is damn hard, but Chuck Berry probably takes it.

I can't remember the last time I listened to Dale Hawkins's "Susie Q" but I instantly not regret putting it on here, it's so much heavier for the 50s than I remembered.

*instantly regret

I'm only recently aware of Sea Cruise, but I'm such an enormous fan of Lloyd Price's Stagger Lee, so I went with that pair.

My also-rans are
THE COASTERS – Poison Ivy/THE COASTERS – Down in Mexico
BO DIDDLEY – Bo Diddley/BO DIDDLEY – Who Do You Love?
THE FLAMINGOS – I Only Have Eyes for You/THE DRIFTERS – There Goes My Baby
SCREAMIN’ JAY HAWKINS – I Put a Spell on You/BOB LEE – Wanted for Questioning
CLARENCE “FROGMAN” HENRY – Ain’t Got No Home/HUEY “PIANO” SMITH & THE CLOWNS – Don’t You Just Know It

I'm also a huge fan of Buddy Holly & The Crickets and the Everly Bros, but those aren't my favorite songs by them.

listening to a lot of this stuff right now (I'm just finishing up with 1957) and have to say, Chuck Berry has some of the best b-sides out there, like Drifting Heart is such a beautiful piece of music, not something I expected from him at all

BO DIDDLEY – Bo Diddley/BO DIDDLEY – Who Do You Love?
THE EVERLY BROTHERS – Bye Bye Love/THE EVERLY BROTHERS – All I Have to Do is Dream
THE FLAMINGOS – I Only Have Eyes for You/THE DRIFTERS – There Goes My Baby

"I Only Have Eyes For You" is the best song of all time, so that (and whatever it's paired with)

enochroot, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 02:49 (one year ago)

For once I actually know and clearly remember most of the choices, which are freaking impossible to choose from, but the moment I saw this, I knew:

JACKIE BRENSTON & HIS DELTA CATS – Rocket 88/LES PAUL & MARY FORD – How High the Moon

The first prob should have been billed as Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm featuring Jackie Brenston, who was mainly Ike's tenor player, but whatever: it needed a singer, and Brenston is good enough, and where were you, Ike? Milestone movement, followed and then some by Moon rivals Les and Mary, tipping the scales to my vote; there ain't nobody like 'em, likely not as good if there were.

PEGGY LEE – Fever/JULIE LONDON – Cry Me a River
