Hey folks, I hope no one minds if I rerun this poll here. It was posted last week to ILE by mistake, and as a result had low participation. I'll copy some of the comments received below. Here is the set-up from ILE: "This is mostly a mix of fun/novelty and moody stuff you could put on a few different settings, so not much that's too intense like "Frankie Teardrop" or "Hamburger Lady," although there are some arresting tracks here."

Tons of great songs here. Gotta say that Then She Bit Me is the better DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince horror rap.

Gonna go with Werewolf, by the Frantics, which has been on my personal Halloween playlist for years. I think I originally heard it from a WFMU blog post.

This is a great playlist I must say

Went for Scientist but there was easily five or six more I would have happily picked

― ...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Thursday, October 5, 2023 12:44 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

yeah good stuff. have only heard about 1/3 of them

― infinite wiggles (Spottie), Thursday, October 5, 2023 1:02 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

thing with a hook

― fpsa, Thursday, October 5, 2023 1:37 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

Much as it pains me to forego Colin Newman in any poll in which he is an option, I had to go for "The Electrician".

― Halfway there but for you, Thursday, October 5, 2023 2:47 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" seems like a good one for this list.

Oh damn, I saw and liked this list but couldn't decide on what to vote for and then forgot about coming back. I think I prob would've gone for White Noise in the end.

― emil.y, Friday, October 6, 2023 12:04 AM (twenty-five minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

Also, damn, I meant to post this on ILM, not, ILE, can someone just delete this and I'll do it again later?

― Chris L

Ah, god, I probably saw this as well. Rubbish forgetful modding on my part. Maybe we should have a re-do on ILM, get more votes in.

― emil.y, Friday, October 6, 2023 12:07 AM (twenty-two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

Hmmm, I actually have 50 more I could use for a part 2, but I fucked this one up so bad (should not have done it when I had insomnia) re-doing it on ILM sounds appealing.

The first time I heard A Raincoat's earworm "It Came in the Night" was in this Kenneth Anger 1970s re-edit of his 1950s short film Rabbit's Moon.

If that gives you a taste for more goth-glam, Lemming's "Lucifera" is like a missing link between Phantom of the Paradise and The Apple.

Chris L, Friday, 6 October 2023 01:20 (two years ago)

Skipping around the list here, I tried to stay away from irrelevant songs that happened to have keywords like "Witch" or "Hell" in the title. One minor exception was this 90s Dischord Records classic.

The Sonics classic made it to Christchurch via the b-side of this band's 1981 single on Flying Nun.

Yes, the greasy slice of early 80s NY skronk that precedes the climax of Abel Ferrara's female revenge classic is represented here.

tbf i think this mix deserved "Frankie Teardrop"

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 6 October 2023 02:24 (two years ago)

There are so many good Broadcast songs that could go on this - "Until Then" immediately came to mind.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 6 October 2023 02:29 (two years ago)

An ominous psych-jazz odyssey from one of the most re-listenable albums I've found in Sun Ra's discography.

John Carpenter – The Fog

The Addams Family IP is big again, which means ipso facto that Ted Cassidy's debut single is the likely poll frontrunner.

If this was good enough for Mark E. Smith to cover, it's good enough to put in rotation every October.

If you're wondering how this Annie remix relates to the poll, you need to finally catch up with one of the more entertaining Halloween movies of the 21st century, The Guest.

As Western® with Bacon Flavor pointed out, Broadcast are extremely well-suited to this poll. I picked a track from their actual film soundtrack, one of many I'm sure we all wish they'd had a chance to do.

This eerie Helium b-side is one of my favorite tracks by them.

I don't think it's possible to hear Exuma's 1970 debut album without having an involuntary "WHAT is this" reaction. I doubt it's my place to say it's coursing with voodoo energy, but it's hard to deny, and good luck finding this much of it anywhere else. Jordan Peele featured a literal needle-drop of the first track prominently in NOPE, but if he had let it play through to "Mama Loi, Papa Loi," audiences would have been practically in a daze.

What's a song about Jesus doing on a Halloween playlist, you might ask. That tells me you've never heard how worked up Simon Finn gets on the subject.

"OwwOOO! Oo-oo-AROOoo heh heh heh. Hey kids, Count Floyd here. Have I got some scary songs for you tonight. You know what's really scary, kids? Aging. That's right, a new kid on the block taking your place. Take my word for it, it's really scary. You'll see. Anyway, just listen."

One thing I've always loved about this song is the unexpected huge orchestra stab near the end kinda replicates the experience of watching Twin Peaks on TV when I was 11 years old: being immersed in this dream world that's periodically, wildly disrupted by nightmares from the subconscious.

An entertaining 1958 record that almost sounds like outsider doo-wop, with lyrics about Frankenstein playing Russian roulette and such.

I said in the preamble that I tried to stay away from some very unsettling songs like "Frankie Teardrop" but Jandek singing "we can't deny there are spirits in this house" comes close to that.
