Valentina Magaletti

I wonder if percussion genius Magaletti deserves a thread on account of her various projects that are too numerous to mention but include Holy Tongue and Vanishing Twin. I heard of her through Vanishing Twin, a band that I liked anyway but who are taken in interesting directions by her work.

giraffe, Friday, 6 October 2023 08:41 (two years ago)

she definitely does.

i particularly love her A Queer Anthology Of Drums album and also the recent V/Z on AD 93 which is her with Zonagmin. Pretty much everything she is involved with is great. Check Moin and Tomaga too.

stirmonster, Friday, 6 October 2023 11:14 (two years ago)

Wow did know V/Z was Valentina Magaletti as well. La Tempesta Colorata is very good too..

mmmm, Friday, 6 October 2023 14:10 (two years ago)

I really love Tomaga but haven't really found a way into any of her other stuff. What's most like Tomaga?

(Oh and UUUU is really great too!)

What's most like Tomaga?

nothing really, but maybe Holy Tongue? Deffo worth checking the V/Z album which is very special.

stirmonster, Friday, 6 October 2023 14:26 (two years ago)

I really liked A Queer Anthology of Drums too. I knew she'd played with a load of people but I'm just looking at her discogs and I didn't realise it was quite so wide-ranging!

emil.y, Friday, 6 October 2023 14:35 (two years ago)

The bio on her website is mind-boggling.

Stirmonster, thanks for the V/Z recommendation. The canon of goth dub music is a small one but I wonder if some of this can be added.

giraffe, Friday, 6 October 2023 14:36 (two years ago)

also the recent V/Z on AD 93 which is her with Zonagmin. that should of course be Zongamin, not Zonagmin, who hopefully will get his own thread one of these decades.

stirmonster, Friday, 6 October 2023 17:18 (two years ago)

thanks for starting this thread! I only knew Vanishing Twin prior to, but I'm listening to Tomaga right now and it's fantastic

That Holy Tongue lp is great; I hope someone reissues the 3 earlier eps.

nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 14:35 (two years ago)

I really love her work on Phil Selway's last solo record (which is really quite good).

these Holy Tongue remixes are so good -

Thanks, stirmonster. Enjoying these remixes.

The V/Z track with Coby Sey made me check out his record from last year and wow. Not sure how this one passed ILX by.

She's in this group Moin (fka Raime), cool percussive post-punk/electronic stuff

Valentina chooses her albums of the year: https://boomkat.com/charts/boomkat-end-of-year-charts-2023/2203 (obviously not including any of her own prolific output).

Listened to Holy Tongue's discography on loop yesterday, it might not be breaking any radical new ground in terms of dub but it's so damn good.

Finally getting to Vanishing Twin after the ILM poll, cool that it's same bassist (Susumu Mukai) as Holy Tongue. Love his playing, maybe they can be the new Sly & Robbie for the '20s.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 29 January 2024 16:51 (one year ago)

I've been on a big Vanishing Twin kick lately, especially Oooki Gekkou. Haven't heard anything else from her, so I'll have to dive into that too.

The b side of the new EP ‘Luche Libre’ is pretty cool. I should have picked up the ‘Basta Now’ book today but I was in too much of a rush. Has anyone a review of this?

mmmm, Saturday, 16 March 2024 19:28 (one year ago)

i can report back after my copy arrives. Also happy that A Queer Anthology of Drums got a repress.

Drum Jump of the Luche Libre is particularly floating my boat this Saturday.

stirmonster, Saturday, 16 March 2024 19:47 (one year ago)

I’m enjoying Fanny Chiarello’s book Basta Now women, trans & non-binary in experimental music. It’s a really great resource for finding interesting music. The ‘works cited’ and discography sections are helpful too. Recommended! Valentina Magaletti related obviously.

mmmm, Saturday, 23 March 2024 16:26 (one year ago)

On less good news I’ve found two pressing faults on copies of A Queer Anthology Of Drums. I think I’m going to hunt for a one that’s not a repress.

Not just prolific, wide-ranging too

giraffe, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 15:02 (one year ago)

Also, ‘Estradas’, her new album with Nidia, is fantastic

Tim F, Friday, 13 September 2024 07:07 (one year ago)

Looking forward to hearing it, I loved Mata a lot

Found this crazy archive of live performances from the Meakusma festival in Belgium, very high quality and tons of interesting performances, lots of Valentina solo and with different bands:

had a lovely moment at making time in philly last month: left her excellent live set as she was wrapping up to go see mark knekelhuis (whose label i proseltyze for constantly) and during his set magaletti appears just as he's playing one of her songs, so i got to see her grinning and dancing to her own music while recording a video of everyone enjoying it

Enjoying this Moin record more than the previous ones and im not sure that its just the vocals? Getting a super-strong waft of Bitch Magnet/Codeine though, feels like each listen is reanimating 20 year old NickB somewhere down deep inside me, and i'm not entirely sure thats totally a good thing

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 13 November 2024 18:48 (one year ago)

Missed this new one. Not sure what a 20yr NickB means but it sounds intriguing..

mmmm, Friday, 15 November 2024 20:45 (one year ago)

This sounds pretty awesome to me. Yes very 90s. Vocal even a bit NIN? I dunno but it’s good to have new Magaletti material.

mmmm, Friday, 15 November 2024 20:51 (one year ago)

There's also a Moin thread (which my eyes keep sliding over due to the mention of Prolapse in the title):

Oh wait, holy * she was on Shit and Shine ? Not Ladybird I presume (at least she's not credited) ? She might have been in London at the time though. This album is still the perfect monster.

Naledi, Thursday, 27 February 2025 11:08 (nine months ago)

Why did I wait to listen to the album with Nidia until now? I didn't realize it was Principe Nidia, even though I'm a fan. Love this.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2025 19:20 (nine months ago)

This def would have been on my AOTY list if I had listened to it, a little surprised it didn't place on the ILM poll.

i forgot to vote for it, but it's great!
