write-in for 3045 ;)

prob something by Lime from this list

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 8 October 2023 21:27 (two years ago)

Perhaps an obvious choice but going to go for Vaughan Mason And Crew which I must have heard every Saturday afternoon for a couple of years circa 79/80 when I used to go ice skating. That bassline!

stirmonster, Sunday, 8 October 2023 21:39 (two years ago)

This poll was inspired by me picking up 3234 (Silvetti - Spring Rain) at a carboot sale this morning and idly perusing the list on the back. i don't really expect many people to be particularly interested in this endeavour but it seems like a good chance for me to go through all the releases properly. There are bloody hundreds though! Out of this bunch i know way more than i thought i would, probably own well over half of them but not necessarily the Rams Horn pressinga. So many of these I love, this is actually impossible i think!

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 21:43 (two years ago)

Just been listening to my copy of Hit'N Run lover and enjoyed it way more than i remember doing so before! Again another killer bassline. But torn between two Azoto's right now, those are just instant happiness

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 21:47 (two years ago)

Vaughan Mason And Crew which I must have heard every Saturday afternoon for a couple of years circa 79/80 when I used to go ice skating

that's a great memory to have!

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 21:48 (two years ago)

it is! 2 other tracks that always instantly transport me back to the ice rink are Supernature and (what strangely eventually went on to become Scotland's alternative national anthem) Yes Sir, I Can Boogie.

stirmonster, Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:13 (two years ago)

Supernature rules so hard

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:22 (two years ago)

only one i have any childhood memories of is the Hi-Gloss tune cos it was on Chart Hits 81 which we got for that christmas. never really loved that one at the time though and it definitely seems a bit slight in comparison to a lot of the other records here. need to relisten though!

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:26 (two years ago)

fun cover of San Salvador from the philippines which i hadn't heard before:

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:34 (two years ago)

(same artist has also recorded tom tom club and bobby orlando covers, but sadly they're not on youtube)

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:35 (two years ago)

okay that Bamboo one is gross. cheesy dutch disco group covering the 4 Seasons. wish that the discogs app had a DO NOT TOUCH alert of some sort, have a horrible feeling i will accidentally buy that one some day

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:43 (two years ago)

I would love to hear those. i wonder if Sherry Simons – Passion is The Flirts song?

X post

stirmonster, Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:44 (two years ago)

had the exact same thought! just a liiittle bit expensive taking a punt on that one though

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:49 (two years ago)

one might have hoped these would have been 50p records but...!!

stirmonster, Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:52 (two years ago)

oh wait, it's on a 7" too with something called 'X-Rated Man' on the flip? sounds hopeful. or at least it would be if there were any copies on this planet anywhere

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 22:52 (two years ago)

> 3009 Little Carlos / Jackson Jones – Shake Your Body Down / I Feel Good Put Your Pants On

I don't think i really need the reggae cover of the jacksons on the a-side of this, but the b-side has been on my wantlist for sooo long. so good!

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 23:10 (two years ago)

so weird, so vibey

blazin' squab (NickB), Sunday, 8 October 2023 23:12 (two years ago)

i didn't notice that was on the list - might have voted for it if i had.

i have this boot of it - https://www.discogs.com/release/1682686-Little-Carlos-Jackson-Jones-Shake-Your-Body-Down-Put-Your-Pants-On

it got a 7" reissue a few years back too.

stirmonster, Sunday, 8 October 2023 23:48 (two years ago)

Unlimited Touch – I Hear Music In The Streets <3
Learned to love this with that Mantronix Soul Jazz comp

fpsa, Sunday, 8 October 2023 23:56 (two years ago)

Yeah both of those Unlimited Touch songs are bombs, maybe Searching To Find The One edges it for me though? Even with the ridiculous shred

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 07:00 (two years ago)

I think that the songs by Bobby Thurston here were the only ones of his that Rams Horn did. Out of the three I'd probably go for Check Out The Groove which does that thing where the verses are sweet as a spring morning and then the chorus flips into this absolutely naaasty serious business funk thing

It's a shame that Rams Horn didn't keep going with him cos they missed out on 'The Very Last Drop' and also this huge D-Train-esque monster which urgently needs a reissue like now:

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 07:41 (two years ago)

why have i never heard Pop Pop Shoo Wah before? feel like i should know it, although obviously i already knew the hook. did it come before or after Pop Muzik? it's very silly anyway but i do like it

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 09:44 (two years ago)

^ that whole phased section from 4 mins onwards would be really cool in the right circumstances, proper gobbling space turkey noises

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 09:50 (two years ago)

would need to be appreciably more drunk than i usually am on a monday morning to truly enjoy 'Touch Me Where It's Hot', it's doing that sleazy cheezy 70s glam bongo thing. makes me wanna listen to 'Down By The Docks' by Sailor

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 10:00 (two years ago)

from the ridiculous to the sublime: this is still an incredible slice of chic-ability isn't it? so gorgeous

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 10:06 (two years ago)

^ also fun to see david sylvian getting down to it in that video

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 10:07 (two years ago)

Not really feeling the Strikers' Body Music. I know I've got a copy somewhere but I can never remember how it goes, and revisiting it, I'm still not getting much of a spark from it. One of those records thats guaranteed to be in every disco section in UK record shops, along with T-Connection and boys town gang. Wish it was half as good as those!

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 13:26 (two years ago)

Maybe I need to hear the Special Disco Remix?

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 13:27 (two years ago)

yeah this remix of “body music” is superior

These are all equally massive:

Bobby Thurston - You Got What It Takes
Unlimited Touch – I Hear Music In The Streets
Sharon Redd – Can You Handle It
The Strikers – Body Music
Empress – Dyin' To Be Dancin'
Unlimited Touch – Searching To Find The One

Appears to be missing 3021?

interesting that (more than?) half of these are Prelude cuts, I guess I don’t really know what Rams Horns deal was

brimstead, Monday, 9 October 2023 15:40 (two years ago)

this is my favorite gayle adams jam, “love fever”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_ZqjR7yBTs

brimstead, Monday, 9 October 2023 15:57 (two years ago)

Yeah, that one is crazy good!!

A lot of the Preludes that were on Rams Horn were also on Epic in the UK, again I don't know what the whole deal was there

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 16:22 (two years ago)

Appears to be missing 3021?

Musique
IN THE BUSH
KEEP ON JUMPIN'

Can't find that listed anywhere. Maybe that's the missing 3020?? It is from 78 though and Rams Horn didn't start putting stuff out until 1980

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 16:29 (two years ago)

I didn't know this one at all before, but this is really superb I think, and sounds like a Loft classic to me - lovely warm vibe to it, brilliant vocals and great brass too. Cool synth solo to boot!

First Love - Don't Say Goodnight

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:03 (two years ago)

Could totally imagine Hunee or someone playing that at the end of the night at Giant Steps

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:09 (two years ago)

I guess I don’t really know what Rams Horns deal was

at least initially they existed purely as a licensing label putting out releases for the Benelux market, although the records got a lot further than that and were ubiquitous in UK DJ shops and even HMV in the 80s and into the 90s. they licensed a huge number of Prelude releases.

stirmonster, Monday, 9 October 2023 17:19 (two years ago)

I also know this story abt "Menergy"

https://www.discogs.com/release/99081-Patrick-Cowley-Menergy

This release was withdrawn from stores after a dispute (even law-suit) with Ariola Benelux, who had the Original rights. After that Rams Horn directly released the Mother F cover version of Menergy.

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:20 (two years ago)

omg I just now realized what "Benelux" means after 40+ years

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:21 (two years ago)

they were generally import price in the UK though.

x post

stirmonster, Monday, 9 October 2023 17:21 (two years ago)

omg I just now realized what "Benelux" means after 40+ years

LOL!

stirmonster, Monday, 9 October 2023 17:21 (two years ago)

I mean, no reason why you should know.

stirmonster, Monday, 9 October 2023 17:22 (two years ago)

in my head I thought it was something about Belgium, I think, not all 3 countries

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:23 (two years ago)

it's such a ubiquitous thing in europe (especially as a record buyer) but no reason why anyone outside europe might know that.

stirmonster, Monday, 9 October 2023 17:24 (two years ago)

Can't find that listed anywhere. Maybe that's the missing 3020?? It is from 78 though and Rams Horn didn't start putting stuff out until 1980

Was working from this list: http://www.hotdiscomix.de/labels/rams_horn_3000.htm

insert nothing here (Eric H.), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:29 (two years ago)

Ah okay thanks! Think that list might be a bit wonky though as discogs has Carol Jiani as 3021 and has photos of the labels, and meanwhile there's no entry at all for In The Bush as a rams Horn 12. 3020 still a mystery though!

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:47 (two years ago)

good to see the next 30 though, some amazing things in that batch

blazin' squab (NickB), Monday, 9 October 2023 17:52 (two years ago)

brimstead, Saturday, 21 October 2023 00:45 (two years ago)

i used to buy these singles in the 90s - a lot of them were a buck in philly! - and ogle the long lists of singles on the 12-inch jackets. i hadn't heard most of them back then.

i totally forgot to vote in this, my own poll, oops. second part coming soon maybe?

anyhow some useless trivia i learned today...

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71JL+b9TSHL._AC_SL1200_.jpg

the woman on the cover of the azoto album 'disco fizz' is nina carter, a glamour model and one half of extremely dubious disco duo blonde on blonde along with fellow page 3 girl jilly johnson (can't lie though, their version of 'whole lotta love' is a guilty pleasure. and if you know the sleeve to that one, you'll probably spot the similarity between the two images). she was also rick wakeman's wife!
