xps map very OTM. "Relevance" is...irrelevant to the value of all music IMO. That's a different discussion for a different thread though!

Eddie Cantor was never critically lauded.

The real answer to this is loads of boring opera.

was this guy lauded? sounds like it...

"November 11 – Première of John Foulds's A World Requiem (composed 1919–21) at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It is repeated on that date each year until 1926."

^^ my speciality.

ian, Monday, 9 October 2023 21:16 (two years ago)

fact: 78 speed was not fixed until 1929 and even then some companies pressed records that were recorded closer to 80rpm; before '29 a lot of the major label things are really better played at 76.5rpm.

kill me.

ian, Monday, 9 October 2023 21:18 (two years ago)

Music critics in 1923 would never for a moment take pop music or jazz seriously - the first tiny crack in that came with Rhapsody In Blue, which premiered on February 12, 1924.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 9 October 2023 21:23 (two years ago)

Music critics in 1923, indeed, even worse than they are today.

ian, Monday, 9 October 2023 21:23 (two years ago)

Most critically lauded contemporary composer in 1923 would possibly be Jean Sibelius?
