St Vincent Is Trying To Be PJ Harvey

I read this comment underneath PJ Harvey's 2004 performance at Glastonbury and it just made my eyebrows jump completely off of my forehead. I genuinely want to know what the link between these two artists could possibly be outside of them both being women who both know how to shred on the guitar. I suppose one could make a case if they were only citing the last two minutes of Huey Newton but I don't really see a strong argument here. I've loved PJ Harvey since I was sixteen and know her discography intimately and have also been following Annie Clark's career for over a decade now. It seems to me, instead of being inspired by other women both of their heroes/influences have always been unmistakably men. Someone help me see the light about this? Maybe I'm missing something.

Interesting. This article may shed some light:

How PJ Harvey Inspired St Vincent

Who doesn’t want to be PJ Harvey is the question

Jay Leno probably didn't want to after this interview...

Otoh, she did come back and do his show again several times.

old board members should MAYBE do a quick thread search when a new U/N posts

It's comforting to think that even after all of ILMs human posters are gone there will still be AIs here responding to each others album polls

tbf Jay had "Rid of Me" on repeat circa 2010

“Lick my legs/I’m on fire” probably not Jay’s favorite lyric these days.

"Search old threads to see if poster is an AI" is not something that would have occurred to me.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 11 October 2023 13:58 (two years ago)

what now? who and what is AI?

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 11 October 2023 13:59 (two years ago)

Is this accusation the new "so-and-so is an old poster's sock"?

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 11 October 2023 14:42 (two years ago)

my first reaction to this thread was just that it feels like something from 2004 -- starting a new thread about a frivolous internet comment rather than posting to an existing thread about the artist.

cf. "My Chemical Romance is this generation's Nirvana"

jaymc, Wednesday, 11 October 2023 15:11 (two years ago)

(maybe not the best analogy since that has become the default MCR thread, but the thread title is an Ultragrrrl quote.)

I imagine the original comment on youtube was simply based on looks, ie: dark lipstick, miniskirt, too skinny

also they're both women. we're famous for not being original. most of us don't even write our own songs. pj harvey and st. vincent do, but they're just copying men.

six months pass...

Jack White was trying to be PJ Harvey

Now all he's got to do is commit to wearing the miniskirt and tall PVC boots.

That's on me, whoops. Poor ILM etiquette. You live and you learn.

God I love her

never really occurred to me before but i've been listening to a fair bit of early danielle dax lately and a lot of early peej sounds distinctly like her e.g. that falsetto bit in 'rid of me' is pure dax. wonder if polly was ever into her?

i mean really, that's not too much of a commitment to make

only reason i can't make that commitment is the chronic ankle instability

tbh I kind of enjoyed it as a reminder of a time when ilm was young and more active
