should parents reward their kids' "good" music taste? or ground them for listening to awful music? or leave them alone and let them develop their aesthetic unguided? outside of formal religion, no generations before the 1960s / '70s / '80s / '90s / 2000s / '10s / '20s (that we know of) judged other people even close to as harshly and and finally by what music they listened to

If I had children, they’d have to justify their continued existence to me every day, so, yes. One mistake and you’re buried in the backyard somewhere.

I'm sure quite of few of folks' parents/grandparents (esp. in the USA south) were punished for listening to rock and roll/race music/jump blues/rhythm & blues in the 1950s, mine certainly were.

for sure throw the 1950s in there. david riesman broke ground noting 1940s, '30s, and '20s adolescent listening habits -- from when the phonograph and radio blew up family rooms

I play what I want around my kids and they like some of it and don’t like some of it. Whatever kind of music they like apart from my influence is encouraged and I don’t talk shit.

I’m happy that they appreciate music and art, if it happens to be what I like too then that’s awesome.
