if you were a young person now what new music would you play to make your parents jump out a window?

it's NY drill, right? hours of gun-waving drill blasting from your fetid bedroom. that would do the trick.

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2023 16:24 (two years ago)

the only time i ever saw my mom go nuts was when my sister was playing the fish cheer from woodstock and she actually ran into my sister's room and ripped it off the turntable and threw the record down the stairs! hahaha! my mom had no religion but she hated profanity. she got it from her mother.

scott seward, Friday, 27 October 2023 16:26 (two years ago)

I love a bit of drill, the kids (9 and 12) listen to what I'd describe as youtuber EDM. I don't hate it but it's boring.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 27 October 2023 16:36 (two years ago)

For me, it’s when they want to hear the same song over and over and over again. I can handle a few replays usually, but it’s that 4th, 5th request where I’ll start to lose it. Then what usually happens is one will start singing a section of the song repeatedly, words mangled, and generally out of tune. This is currently the case for me with Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary.”

Ha, I don't mind Rick Beato. But the reason I posted that video is because it does get into some very specific nuts n bolts stuff that he posits tends to annoy old people. Songs that use the same sounds, no rhythmic variation, additive production, autotune (specifically melodyne to make all vocals perfect).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 27 October 2023 21:03 (two years ago)

Serious question, what do y'all dislike about Beato? He seems pretty reasonable, afaict. I don't follow him religiously or anything, but the interviews I've seen have all been good (the Kirk Hammett one is great, also Metheney, Lanois, etc.) and I find it interesting to hear someone really knowledgable about both music theory and making music talk about stuff; there was a really good one I saw where he dissected an Ariana Grande song, revealing all sorts of neat stuff going on.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 27 October 2023 21:56 (two years ago)

Hmm... can you link that one? (Never heard of this Beano guy, but I'll check that out)

The SoyBoy West Coast (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 27 October 2023 22:16 (two years ago)

See, I love that stuff, I love when people break down the elements of a song. He had an episode about "More Than a Feeling" that was illuminating to me, from showing how the verse part is actually a mix of electric and acoustic to isolating Brad Delp's vocals and revealing how the dude does not lose any power even when he is going up to those super high notes.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 27 October 2023 22:21 (two years ago)

I don't have strong feelings about Beato, he seems insightful yet dull. I mostly like the Pat Metheny interview because Metheny himself is such an odd blend of chill weirdo who also happens to be insanely driven and disciplined.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 27 October 2023 22:39 (two years ago)

Serious question, what do y'all dislike about Beato?

Some people just hate other people's enthusiasm.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 27 October 2023 22:55 (two years ago)

Beato is dull and his knowledge rarely goes beyond talking about the chords but he seems chill. Most interesting bits for me is when he listens to the top tracks on spotify mainly because I like seeing old people reacting to what the kids are listening to. Again his opinions are sort of dull and very rockist - he does not get loop based music at all since he pretty much expects every song to have chord variations to have something to talk about.

one time, roughly 15-20 years ago, i tried to explain the appeal of us maple's music, to my father, while driving down to wilmington, nc from kitty hawk (northern coast / outer banks of north carolina) ... we listened to talker and acre thrills (towards the end of the trip, as i was driving) and, in my mind, it felt as if i'd succeeded somehow in conveying my enthusiasm (my perception of it, even) to my dad, who mostly listens to the oldies station.. 60s/70s/80s popular rock radio. it was a sort of false reverie (a perceived connection. we arrived home as the sun was going down), as he still seems to perceive me as an alien.

to this day, my father cannot comprehend what it is that i find worthwhile or appealing in listening to abstract, different, extreme, "ambient" etc. forms of music and sound art. he's a casual player himself (guitar), and locked in to a sensibility that only really recognizes the tried & true formulae of western, standard pop / rock music. there's a familiar expression that he repeats, "music is math" (simply) ... while that's true, it's also maddening, when discussing alternate forms, standards, and unquantifiable elements of composition... weird, psychic impasse

Lowell N. Behold'n, Saturday, 28 October 2023 08:10 (two years ago)

My bosss nova loving dad really loved it when I put Sam Prekop’s self titled and Pink Moon on in the car. He didn’t really understand what Tim Hecker was doing when I played him in my room as a teen but I think he appreciated I was appreciating something as art.

My mum could not STAND Damo Suzuki’s vocals whenever it wasn’t conventional singing. Had to be very careful on the Can tracks I picked in the car

After seeing the Unwound reunion, my friend commented that he couldn't imagine his (old) parents getting anything out of it at all. Just very atonal, unmelodic, not even conventionally musical. I think he said something about playing them Fugazi many years back and they at least seeing the appeal, but he thought Unwound would be totally unpalatable.

I generally like Beato and think now and then he has some good stories, but I can't stand his reacting to the top tracks on Spotify lol. infuriating how he obv doesn't understand dance music but still tries to critique a reggaeton track for not having a middle eight or whatever. it's probably solely for views - his enthusiasm seems much lower in those videos - but I think if anyone should dislike Beato for something, it should be those videos
