S/D: Patrick Shiroishi

Given the breadth and number of releases in Shiroishi's discography, I think it's time for him to have a thread of his own.

I am generally a big fan of a lot of his work, particularly the solo records (Hidemi, descension, evergreen) and his collaborations with Jusell, Prymek, and Sage as Fuubutsushi. I like that the guy can make blisteringly distorted and pained protest records alongside ECM-style fusion records and ambient soundscapes.

I think there are only a few pieces that I cannot get really into, like the collab with Chris Williams that seems sort of sophomorically skronky and "look i am playin this instrument with an electric toothbrush" style gimmickry for me.

What do you think?

the new record is awesome ("I was too young to hear silence"), RIYL chloe jackson-reynolds. i think in general his solo work is very good, like you say

i also like the "Grass Tree Air" record with Ted Byrnes for low-key backyard skronk

"40 oz. of shame" is a great title with great artwork and track names; not so sure i dig the music but it's not bad either

i think the one on astral spirits ("borasisi") is kind of underwhelming but maybe i wasn't in the right frame of mind

lots more to check out, it's a monster disco . . .

He contributed a video to an online event I put together on New Year's Day 2022. The whole thing isn't up (might put it up one of these days), but here's a short excerpt:

Really love Hidemi

Lot of good recommendations in this piece by Ted Davis: https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/patrick-shiroishi-hidemi-list

I thought the SSWAN record that came out on 577 last year was terrific. Jessica Ackerley says there's more from that session to come out. Their duos with PS are really good too: one a gnarly skronkfest, the other ambient.

Fuubutsushi records felt like minor miracles — just kinda perfect. i've heard probably like 1/10 or less of Shiroishi's solo stuff, but I dig the latest one a lot. have the feeling he's building up to a masterpiece.

three months pass...

Unashamedly pinching this from a link tyler posted elsewhere. It's loosely affiliated to Shiroshi since it's on Matthew Sage's label (where Fuubutsushi stuff is released), which in turn leads me to wonder if we need an ambient jazz/ambient Americana thread where we can collate all of this kind of stuff?

Anyway, this is gorgeous.

New Fuubutsushi record on the way. New single has some pleasing ecstatic skronk:
